Texas High School Football

Driven through it multiple times to get to Martin Dies or Toledo Bend.
It ain't "Matin Dies", it's "Dam B"

Dams A & C were never built although the Corp of Engineers poured the concrete pillars for one of them outside of Rockland. My grandmother's sister used to string her trot lines from those pillars to the trees.

Dam B is a tribute to the hard work of convict labor and what they would do to get outside the walls for days/weeks at a time. Have you heard any panthers over there? Seems the development ran off all the panthers.

Yes all true. The closest set of Leander ISD schools that touch the border of Lake Travis ISD.
They are also 200 feet across from Eanes ( Westlake ) at Commons Ford Ranch Park on Lake Austin and for miles downstream.

Commons Ford Ranch Park is where Eanes, Lakes Travis and Leander ISDs all abutt.

Speaking of which, we are
going to kick North Crowley butt

Vandergriff is in LISD, but is located in the Four corners area, 2222 and 620, and pulls from Steiner Ranch—practically Lake Travis area. It’s more upscale than Leander, with huge buy-in in band, orchestra, drill teams, academic competition, etc.

Yeah its in a weird spot. Right off 2222 between 360 and 620. Riverbend is right there. Steiner is a bit further but it sure as hell isn't Leander. Big houses abound, however. There be money in those hills!

Been following N. CROWLEY up here this season.... they are solid and on a mission. I love Westlake, their success and talent they send to UT.

However, I think N. Crowley will win in a close game.

My picks for this weekend:

I really don't know enough about 6-man to make many predictions. I've only watched like 3 games in my life and didn't understand what was going on in some of them.

2A2 - Muenster over Shiner - I think it'll be closer than some of the other pundits think, as Shiner had a pretty stout turnaround from their 0-3 start. But the Hornets haven't even been tested.
2A1 - Ganado over Stamford - Call it an upset, but I think Ganado has been better at finishing games because the undefeated Bulldogs haven't faced much adversity until the playoffs.
3A2 - Gunter over Woodville - I don't have a great reason other than Gunter has "been there done that." They're pretty equal on paper.
3A1 - Columbus over Malakoff - While the Cardinals don't have the undefeated sheet that Malakoff does, they're a faster starting and better-finishing team.
4A2 - Carthage over Waco La Vega - Has the potential to be the biggest point differential of all the championship games.
4A1 - Celina over Kilgore - I think the Bobcats have learned their lessons from the past few years about not taking good defensive teams for granted. It'll be close, but I don't think Kilgore has the offense to continue competing.
5A2 - SOC over Richmond Randle - Randle benefited from probably the easiest schedule from any school without an "EP" in front of their name, and then faced some really tough playoff games. SOC dominated last year's state champ in their rematch.
5A1 - Smithson Valley over Highland Park - This'll probably be the lowest scoring state championship, and it was the toughest to pick. I think the Rangers have had a better playoff run against similar quality of opponents.
6A2 - Southlake Carroll over Leander Vandegrift - I think this is another one where the Dodge name just prevails, and this time he doesn't have to coach against Dad. SLC had a really tough playoff game each round, and I think that built them into this "everybody against us" mindset.
6A1 - North Crowley over Austin Westlake - I think this is the year Gates pulls it all together. I know Westlake is tough, but even with that dominant win over North Shore, I still think North Crowley had more of a target on their backs the whole year. Whether it was that close game against DeSoto back in September, or the narrow one over Duncanville last week, I think they've answered the call at each step of the way. I don't doubt that Westlake can win this one, but it seems more "destiny-laden" to me for North Crowley to pull it out.

Final tally by "region" (generously):
Houston - 2
DFW - 6
Austin to SA corridor - 1
East Texas nowhere - 1

I mostly agree, but:

2A2 - Muenster over Shiner - One set of Germans (cheese makers) v. another set (beer barons). My grandmother came from Germany through Galveston and settled in Central Texas. I will take Shiner.

Carthage over Waco La Vega - La Vega is a tough town to live in (stinch from Waco and such). I will take them.

SOC over Richmond Randle - SOC may win the game, but Randle will end-up with the Trophy after the eligibility complaint findings.

Smithson Valley over Highland Park - This will be interesting. HP is very talented and fast. However, since they beat 3 Frisco schools at the Star I am not sure how they will do in Jerrah's bigger house.

So you’re picking a directional school over Westlake. Good Luck with that. :)

And now this…after all we’ve done on the 40.

Go Shiner.... So close to my hometown that we used to jokingly refer to it as a suburb.

We shall see. My Westlake Football Brotherhood has the better Defense.

BTW, 215 acre, Commons Ford Ranch Park, relatively unknown, is one of my favorite parks in Texas. It’s a must see in Travis county. A mile of Lake Austin Frontage, little traffic, huge pecan trees, miles of diverse, lonely trails, swimming holes up the canyon, totally surrounded by Dell’s Ranch. Go after hours and you’ll have it to yourself.

This post will self-destruct in 24 hours.

Let's all go after hours just to F up your post!

what the heck is a Vandegrift?
The origins of the name go way back to the ancient Netherlands and a guy named Van. They didn’t use surnames. He went on to become an infamous grifter…a rare accomplishment since everyone else had to work so hard just to survive way back then.

Oh, I don't know. I suspect "grifter" might be a pretty, pretty old occupation.

The Championship games are being streamed on some backwoods outfit using two tin cans and a wire.

Charlie is retiring, but he really humped the puppy on his way out the door.

Thanks for the video. Apparently a great game, now 29-28 Shiner for those of us who cannot watch thanks to the Buna Mafia's greed and stupidity.

Shiner lost 36-29. No trip to the Courtesy Room at the brewery for the boys. ;-) Many, many moons ago, I used to know people who worked there.

My first prediction holds true as Muenster holds off the fightin' Shiner Bocks. 1-0 so far.

Today, we get 2A1, 3A2, and 3A1 state finals.
