Terry on-the-fencers, how you like him now?

Well, at least we know Terry is no Steve Fisher. 3 win tournament difference in the first year. He better recruit the best class ever known if he wants to catch up.

I'm certainly no hater, but anyone in their right mind has to be concerned abut the lack of adjustments and failure to calm the team down in the 2nd half last night.

Disu missing put Allen in a position where the Miami player was better. Plus the lack of offensive rebounds became telling in the end.

I just don't agree. Horns were playing excellent defense and offense for 32 min
without Disu. they were looking for open shots, making the extra pass to get open shots, and were quick and in position on defense.

Down the stretch Defensively, they looked slow and tired--fouling because the Miami guys were beating them downcourt and driving into position. Horns were fouling because they were out of position to defend well.
Yes Miami was getting the lion's share of the calls. But Horns were definitely not playing their best defense or offense down the stretch.

The turnovers and shooters clanking the front of the iron during crunch time is not on Terry. Cunningham backing into defender while blocking out was not on Terry either. Terry would probably tell you he didn’t coach a perfect game but if we hit a couple of those shots and remove even one of those careless turnovers, we hold on and win.

Local sports talk said this morning that Terry was informed he will be getting an offer and hope to have the deal announced on Tuesday.

It should have been a foul on the Miami player. Brock was blocking out and the contact was based upon the Miami player moving into Brock and then jumping over. Brock fell because the player jumped. Brock was merely holding his ground. He had the right to that space.
Brock had position and the Miami denied that position. Should have been an easy call against Miami.

I like Terry, I think nearly all of the fans do. He will get the job. I hope he succeeds and will root for him, like all Texas fans.

Terry did a great job winning and keeping the team together following Beard's suspension and dismissal. That is an event that could have derailed the team completely. That said, unfortunately, my confidence in Terry succeeding moving forward is low.

The reason for low confidence is that while Terry has an outstanding track record as an assistant, his head coaching record was just okay. He does have Fresno's State's only NCAA appearance since 2001, which is an accomplishment. Other than a few good seasons there, he did not have sustained success at Fresno or UTEP and ended up back as a top assistant. Beard put this team and staff together (including hiring Terry). Beard also coached 20% of this season. It is not like Terry even coached the team the entire year. A lot of people will refuse to admit it, but given Beard put the team together, hired Terry and the staff, and beat Gonzaga and Creighton while still here showing he built the team into at least an elite 8 team, Beard deserves more than 50% of the credit for the success this season.

Terry is just an unproven commodity as a head coach. The most likely scenario is one good season next year then the wheels fall off. How many of the staff will leave for other jobs (going to Ole Miss or otherwise)? How many players will transfer (going to Ole Miss or otherwise)? Can Terry build and sustain his own program? Terry will be hired, and we will find out. The Big XII may be better than the SEC in basketball, but facing Rick Barnes and Chris Beard every year will be no easy task. I shall hope for the best and root for the Horns! :hookem:

I will note that I do think Terry is better than Smart. Terry's 3 tournament wins this year are 1 more than Smart's 2 tournament wins his last 10 seasons (not even including the no postseason covid 2020 season). Even if Terry does not succeed the way Penders, Barnes or Beard did, I am confident Texas will do better than it did the 6 seasons we had to endure Shaka Smart or the 6 seasons Texas had to endure Kaiser Bob.

Edit: fixed a "hilarious" autocorrect typo.

This is the number one thing I will be looking for to determine my level of optimism/pessimism. I'll be taking my cues from the following:

Beard put together a very good staff. As I see it today, if zero assistants bail out, then that is an extremely positive sign moving forward.

If one leaves, that's a gray area. We have guys with a lot of experience, and somebody could get picked off the staff by any number of schools.

If more than one of the current staff leave it will be a big red flag that other people intimately familiar with the team and program lack faith in its direction.

We lost this game for a variety of reasons and the whole of those reasons did not sour me on Rodney:

1) Loss of Disu
2) Injury to Carr
3) Miami shot lights out (Miller 20 - 20 from the floor and the line)
4) Referees ignored blatant and consistent push-offs on stop and shoot drives, along with two clear over the back penalties against Ormier who subsequently grabbed key rebounds and scored key baskets (one of which was and an one). Check this sequence:

The anti-Terry crowd won’t give credit to him for much, if anything. One poster even said a National Championship wouldn’t make him deserving…not exact words. I say give the dude a chance and then feel free to go all Nostradamus on how terrible he will be. Im sure all thought Beard would succeed and didn’t predict he’d go all Mike Tyson on his girlfriend.
