TCU opens as fav over Texas

You think any other top 10 team would cry about not having film to work from?
Do not know if they really cry but I am pretty sure not having any game video does complicate it a wee bit. Who knew what was installed in the two weeks KU had to work on their new offense?

Pretty difficult to prepare for the unknown with a young and inexperienced freshman DB room.

Seems if Texas appointed a new OC mid season and even with 2 weeks we would struggle offensively. Texas made it look like KU has been running that offense all year.

My two cents -- I would not mind seeing Duv moved to Z, opposite CJ, bumping both Eagles (to rotation status) and Epps (out of rotation). Start Jake at the slot. But they say Coach Meh loves Epps so this appears unlikely as long as Meh hangs on

While we are at it, why not run some 4 WR sets? Drop the TE
This wont happen either because of Herman's reliance on the TE, but I would still like to see us experiment with it, since we easily have the WR depth to do it. Too often defenses are allowed to ignore our TE as a pass catching threat. I dont think we tried to flex Brewer and go deep to him until that one attempt against Kansas
Me thinks the staff loves Epps as a WR target in practice but overestimate him in game situations. But conversely, how else is he to improve?

I would like to see more speed sets at WR midfield with Devernay, Smith, Lesis and Washington or Collin. Too bad about Moore.

Was Brewer flexed then? One has to recognized in that "failure" win Brewer was used more than ever before as a target.

Or that Texas has not seen that offense all year, let alone the freshman DB.
Texas has had injuries in the defensive backfield for weeks. These guys have been playing for weeks. Why can't we figure out KU? KU?!?

You're making my point. Poor Texas has freshmen playing against...a brand new offense with lesser talent.

Pooka, an all B12 RB last year is not a "lesser talent." Carter beat Texas in Strong's next to last game and played out of his mind to make Jalen Hurts look like a Special Needs player. The receivers were pretty good and they had two guys at LB who were good and fast.

Texas has 11 rivals. I imagine when Texas plays them, they will do their best to play their best game. TCU will also this weekend as their roster is full of guys that Texas did not offer.

If they had gone from a wishbone or power I/wing T offense to what they ran, then you are dealing with a NEW offense and personnel issues. KU had two weeks to work that offense. It isn't rocket science. Passing game concepts are basically all the same. Keep the same terminology and its a go. DB does this you do this....Read this coverage you audible to this....They give you this alignment you block this guy on this shoulder....etc,etc.... Unless your players are dumb as a rock you can put a ton in in two weeks. A new OC will have totally different tendencies, so you don't know when they will run or pass, if they like to run strong or weak side, etc, etc....It gave KU an advantage.
I'm not defending Orlando and his 3-3-5 defense. THAT crap sucks as a base defense. I know it helps to know what the offense does before they do it, and Texas didn't know due to the new OC for KU.

If we don't utilize Smith more we are going to lose him to the portal. He is good and probably sees he could be starting and getting twice the number of touches somewhere else. It also pisses me off that Herman and Beck said he needed to have both hands on the ball when he fumbled...BS....If he had his other hand on that ball it would maybe be broken now...That DB happened to get under pads, put his helmet right on the football. **** happens. I would have liked to hear Herman say just that, but NOOOO... SMH

I think he came out of his familiar spot on the end of the OL, after a delay.
Last season, I do recall wen ran some medium range delay posts to him maybe 2 or 3g in a row? He had him open for the TD 3 or 4 times but each time Sam overthrew him. It was frustrating. And then we just stopped trying that play completely.

Herman uses the TE to seal to the DE alot. But I think his most important role is force the DL to set so the QB can read it, and to also try and lock in coverage in the secondary. So he is more of a tool to the help the QB reads than anything. If he does flex out, its usually pretty noticeable since it looks so weird for us to be doing.

My two pesos (about what it's worth, depending on the exchange rate) on the utilization of WRs, discussed up-thread:

Put the best 4 WR on the field (or the best 3WR in a 3-WR set) at the same time, without regard to which WR position they have mostly trained at (Z, Y, slot, whatever). Cross-train as needed, but get the best 4 (or 3) on the field at the same time.

My take on the current best 4: Duvernay, Johnson, Eagles, Smith.

Pooka is 1 guy. So, other than him, you think KU has players who are on the same level as Texas talent wise?

Okay, I give up. KU is awesome. Look forward to playing them again in the CCG.

I never have heard a coach say, "You don't need to have two hands on the ball when you're tackled."

We will see them next year as probably a better team but without Carter. Pooka will return as a Junior. Miles will get more guys and coach them well. OC will return also unless he receives an offer he cannot refuse.

Yes, and the QBs at OSU and WVU will be better too. Hope our defense is.

I would like to see the best six or so rotate. I think Washington and Lewis have skills to contribute.

Moore may be on Portal row. Woodard and Pouncey seem to have receded.

Hes getting quality reps as a true freshman. Give me a break. At Bama or tOSU he wouldnt be a starring player either.

Special teams for Ingram and C Johnson? Except for the ‘hands” team I don’t like it. I do not want either of them hurt making a tackle.

Duv graduates and Smith will be the slot dude for 2-3 more years depending on how long he wants to play. Why on earth would he go sit out a year? Would make no sense at all unless TH breaks down the relationship somehow. Next year Smith will be Sam's security blanket with newer receivers on the outside. I'd bet he get 60+ catches.

CB Jalen Green should play

S DeMarvion Overshown did not travel with the team
Herman seemed like Overshown was iffy on Thurs

BJ Foster is available in “emergency only” situations

Thus down 5 DBs going in (assuming no Foster)

The depth chart originally had Overshown and Montrell Estell as co-starters at one safety
Brandon Jones and Tyler Owens as co-starters at the other S spot.
Brandon Jones is also a co-starter at nickel with Foster.
------------------

We are off next week so expect to get Foster, Overshown, Sterns, McCulloch, Whittington all back for November.

Chris Ogbonnaya's (who more consistently wrapped up the ball with both hands and arms than anybody) career at Texas: 140 rushes, 75 receptions, 4 kick returns; 219 total touches. 1 fumble. 0 lost.

And nothing to do with this point but also had the 70+ yard back breaking run against OU in 2008.
