State Farm Lone Star Update 10-30-10

FW beginning on April 23 we will be in the final four weeks of the competition with 6 1/2 points available. We lead 7 1/2 to 5. The only points after more thought is that the Aggies are certain to get the Men and Women's Indoor Track Points but others are up for grabs. We need 2 of them to at least retain the cup and 2 1/2 to win it outright. The following is the schedule left.

April 23 Men Tennis in CS. We would be a very slight favorite but must remember the match is in CS where the Aggies have a big win streak and usually get much support. The key thing I believe will be who gets the doubles point. This one has me worried and it would be a big blow to our chances if the Aggies get this one. We will see.

April 22-24 Big 12 Womens' Golf Championship in Columbus, MO and April 25-27 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship in Hutchinson, KS. These teams are so evenly matched that both should be close. If we get 1 point though I will be extremely happy and if both extremely elated. Remember this one is one in which who finishes the highest of the two gets the point. They could go either way in my opinion even though I think our Men's team has a slightly better chance.

May 4 Softball in CS. It would be great if we could get this 1/2 point but unfortunately the game is in CS where the Aggies play tough. I look for it to be another close game but the home field favors the Aggies.

Big 12 Men and Women's Outdoor Big 12 Champioships in Norman, OK. We are improving but still these points are most likely the Aggies.

Baseball on May 19 at CS and May 20 and May 21 in Austin. This series could be a big factor. Whoever wins 2 out 3 will get the point. I look for the games to be very close. If we can pull the one at CS we will be on good shape. This could go either way this year though.

Remember if the two teams tie 9 1/2 to 91/2 we retain the cup because we won last year even though I would prefer to win it but it won't be easy either way. Unlike the Aggies if we reatain the cup by a tie I will be relieved but not elated like $Bill was. We will see what happens.

Based on how Aggy absolutely dominated at the Texas relays this past weekend you can already mark down those points as gone.

So it really comes down to what we have thought all along men's tennis (in B/CS) and Baseball (split series) to insure a tie and if softball can win on the road the chance to win it outright again. I am more optimistic about golf based on some comments in this thread but am not counting them as I just dont know enough about the relative strengths to really get a feel for who is in best seat for those points.

Texas is in much better shape then I thought we would be last fall but still needs to thread the needle to win this thing again.

What we really need to be concerned with is winning conference and national championships. I hope that we start improving in track and field really soon and one would think the heat is really on Bubba. There shouldn't be such a divide between us and aggy. There has to be something fishy going on for them to be so good so fast or they are just throwing everything at these other sports. I think their women's basketball team was good and got hot at the right time so I'm not too surprised there. I know they are trying to win at the smaller sports where there's opportunity but UT needs to counter. UT puts a lot of time and effort in the Texas Relays so why stop there, if we want to be good at Track and Field there needs to be some changes. I see that their coach concentrates on relays and events no one really focuses on like the triple jump. Now we are really good at swimming, baseball, softball, and volleyball and pretty good at golf. We need to follow through with some championships again.

I am very impress with the job Bev have done with the womens team. Last year we did not perform at the Texas level I am use too seeing. But oh boi, what a helluva turn around! Good Job Bev. I never expected to see the 4x100 relay team, run a 43.68. And we did not have a relay at all last year. And the 4x400 runs a 3:31 We are ranked in the Top 10 in the Nation in both of them. AM team packs a lot of sprinter and 110 hurdles runners. Texas packs almost a complete team except. I would like to see 2 more sprinters.Which I believe are coming next year. We are also deep in the 400 and 400 hurdles. So AM have their punch. And Texas have their punch.

A critical point is on the line today at CS starting at 1 P.M. in Men's Tennis. If the Aggies get this point they will be in great position to win it so hopefully our Horns can win it. Both teams are evenly matched and it could go either way. I hope Horn fans in the area can go support us. The Aggies are tough at CS but hopefully most will be home for Easter Break. But this point is most critical for us. GO HORNS!

Ags now lead 4-1 in the tennis match, so they will win this event (there's a total of 7 available points in the tennis match).

The womens golf team has a two stroke lead over Iowa State and a five stroke lead over Texas A&M in the Big 12 Womens Golf Championship after the first two rounds. Madison Pressel currently has a six stroke lead for medalist. The final round will be played tomorrow in Columbia, Missouri.

A disappointment in the Men's Tennis match losing this valuable point. Now we need the Women's Golf team to make up for it. Last year they had I think a one stoke lead but feel apart the last day. If they can hold on and get the point we still will have a shot at the trophy. If not it will be A&M's this year.

The Aggies whipped us 5-2 and get the Men's Tennis point as pointed out. A big disappointment but hopefully the team will do better in the playffs. Hopefully our Women's Golf team can hold them off. It would be great if they could maintain the lead and win first place.

Now if the Men's Golf team can continue this hot streak starting tomorrow for 3 days, we can put this thing away for another year...Go Horns Go!

I am one who could give a flip about the LoneStar Showdown thing whether we win it or not. What I do give a flip about is you guys who it matters to and your faithful following of it. When we win a game or something that gives us points I like to read your enthusiasm and smile knowing y'all are happy about something you care about.

I eagerly await Bill commenting on this latest positive development for the Horns. Enjoy!

Great job Ladies! We really needed this point after losing the Men's Tennis point yesterday. Our Ladies not only got it for us they won the championship! Well done Ladies!
We now lead it 8 1/2 to 6. We need 1 point to retain the trophy since we own the tie breaker and 1 1/2 points to win it.
Regarding Men's Golf I hope our Horns can play well but after what happened last week I am afraid this one is going to the Aggies but still there is hope. But the Aggies have to be definitely favored.
I still think we aren't there yet in the Outdoor Men and Women's Track and Field Teams.

So to win the competition we have to get the 1/2 point in Women's Softball when they play the Aggies in CS next week and Baseball. Even if we don't get it in softball we will still have the chance to get the trophy with the tie if we can it in baseball.

We got a chance to retain it which even though I won't be elated with a tie like $Bill it will still be nice to keep it. We will see.

So far FWHorn and my analysis is right where we expected even though we thought we would get the Men's Tennis point and the Aggies would get the Women's Golf point but fortunately our Women's Golf team came through for us and how! Well Done Ladies!

Three rounds. You're right that A&M would have to make up 4 strokes today, which is entirely possible. Within the last few years they erased an 11-stroke deficit against us in the championship.

Just getting a chance to catch up on everything. Congrats to womens golf. Fantastic job and Big XII champs!

Sorry to hear about tennis but that has been looming all year and aggy is tough in B/CS, we should get them in the conference tourny and hopefully still bring home a championship.

Hope men's golf has a big day today. Absent that, it will come down to baseball which has been the expectation all year.

It's early in rd 4 and a lot of golf left to play - Horns and ags both on holes 3-6 - but we've picked up a couple of strokes already. Now just 3 behind a&m with most of the round to go. Let's see who wants it most and delivers today...I hope it's the Horns!

yes, things change quickly, horns down by 8 now so guess they got one back. of course going from 2 down to 9 down in a matter of one or two holes means anything is possible. if the same thing happened to the ags we would be back within a stroke. at least 10 holes to play so the horns need to finish strong.

Clawing our way back; from nine down to back within four of the ags with half a round to play. We would be in front of a&m if not for the two triple bogies but guess we should be glad we're still within striking distance all things considered. Can't afford any more big scores like that though.

The tournament is almost over and we are behind aggy by 5 strokes. I know about "ifs and buts", but our #3 guy who went E, +1 and +2 for the first 3 rounds is at +13 today with 3 holes left. If he was at +7 for today we would have a one stroke lead on aggy.

It is up to baseball as to whether we will retain the LSS trophy by giiving us a tie for the year at 9.5-9.5.

I realized a couple minutes after my last post that by us winning softball in aggy and the baseball series that the score would be
Texas : 10
aggy: 9
which would give us the win with out a tie. Just ot back to a computer to post.
Also, just have to say Wow that out #5 men's golf player posted the best score in the 4 rounds of the Big 12 tourney.

Mens tennis got drilled today 4-0 by aggy in Big XII tourny (had already lost the LSS point). That early season 4-3 win seems a long time ago. Hard to see the team mak9ing much of an NCAA run this year.

Anderson wasn't in the lineup for the two Big12 tourney matches, and apparently his absence makes a big difference. He's 9-4 at the #3 spot this year, and with him out four guys move up a notch. For instance Maldenov is a stellar 9-1 at the 5 spot this season but was behind at #4 vs. the Ags, and Whitehead is 6-2 at the 6 spot and was a set down at #5 in the A&M match. Of course if we had done better in doubles or the top of the lineup the match might have been closer, but it seems like having Anderson in the lineup is pretty key if we want to be competitive against top programs. Hopefully he isn't injured and will be back for post-season play.
