State Farm Lone Star Update 10-30-10

FW I don't really like this tie breaker policy and a few years ago I wrote State Farm about what I in my feeble mind thought was a better tie breaker. I suggested if it is tied at 9.5 to 9.5 that the winner of the football game be awarded a 1/4 point and that would be the winner in case of tie at the end. That way each year stands alone. I also argued that it would be fair because by far more people watch the football game than the other sports possibly all put together. I also argued that it would be fair since football is a men's sports and the lone star showdown has 10 points allocated to women's sports and 9 points to men's sports.
I guess it was a ridiculous suggestion because I never got a response from them and I am one of their customers.

Bill, IMHO the adjustment to make is in T&F. I would consider indoor and outdoor (with total points as the scoring) as one which would reduce the available points from 4 to 2.

This was the seventh year of the competition and UT leads 5 - 2. Below I will give a summary of the years. Since Track and Field Sports account for 4 points of the competition I will list those results because whoever dominates those has an advantage especially if they get a sweep because 4 points is almost halfway to the total you need to win.

2004-05 UT wins over A&M 14.5 to 4.5. UT gets all 4 T&F points.

2005-06 UT wins again 14 to 5 and gets all T&F points.

2006-07 UT wins again but it is much closer at 10.5 to 8.5. UT and the Aggies split the T&F points.

2007-08 The Aggies win 10.5 to 8.5 with A&M dominated T&F getting 3 of the 4 points. A dangerous trend starting here.

2008-09 The Aggies win even though the two teams have 9.5 to 9.5. But adding the prior year points to the tie breaker the Aggies win 20 - 18. The Aggies get 3 out of 4 T&F points again.

2009-10 UT wins a close one 10-9 as the Aggies take all 4 T&F points.

2010-11 The two teams tie at 9.5 to 9.5 but this time we get the tie breaker as prior year points are added and we win 19.5 to 18.5. Once again the Aggies sweep the T&F points but our Ladies Inddor Track and Field team loses the point but the an extremely close margin.

What is alarming is that in the last 4 years the Aggies have dominated T&F getting 14 of the 16 points. Still we have been able to overcome it some but at the same time we need to do better. We dominated these sports the first 3 years and got 10 out of the 12 points.

Too many of the minor sport teams are chronic losers to ATM, in some cases in an increasingly embarrassing manner, the prime example being women's basketball - aggette asswhippings are almost automatic for GG's crew.

Other sports which need improvement are T&F, tennis, softball, soccer and golf. Too many underperformers for which recent conference championships are anomalous. We will be in tough shape when Reese retires because men's swimming is almost automatic for the Longhorns.

Folks can ridicule Byrnes all day long, but the proof is in the pudding for lesser sports. ATM has surpassed Texas in many sports UT formerly dominated and Dodds and Plonsky don't give a ****.

Bill, that's a Title 9 issue, not a LoneStar Showdown issue.
