This competition between UT and A&M had some recent events. We are now in the 2010-11 year. Yesterday we split the point with A&M in soccer which is good since the Aggies were favored but still we outplayed them and had chances but couldn't get a second goal. Our Men and Women's Cross County Teams got a point each again. The Women got 5th place while Texas Tech won the Big 12 Championship. and the Men got th place with Oklahoma Won the Big 12 Championship. The Aggies got 9th in both events which gives us the two points.

It is too bad our women's volleyball team lost at CS because this would have given us a full point but also avoided giving Nebraska that extra cushion.

The score now is Texas 2 1/2 to A&M 1

It takes 10 points to win it. In the event it is a 9 1/2 tie overall for both teams UT retains the Cup because we won it last year but this would be hollow to me.

Bill, wont be able to follow this as much as last year with my daughter due to be born any day now but some quick thoughts. We should get the 1/2 point at home in volleyball and be up 3-1. But from then on I just dont see a path to winning this year.

We could pick up the two tennis points and at least mens swimming. Baseball is a distinct possibility but not a given. We will lose all 4 T&F points and 1.5 of the 2 basketball points (assuming our men can win at home). We likely split the softball. Golf mens and womens, womens swimming and football are the wildcard points but I dont like Texas' chances at this point for any of those four.

Where do we find 9 1/2 points I just cant see it.

FW congratulations on the newest addtion to your familiy that is coming. I think right now the key thing is that our basketball teams need to do better. The men need to sweep the Aggies and the women need to at least split. I will do more study on it later but it doesn't look good as in the past.

FW I checked it out and I agree with your analysis. If we can get one of the golf or one of the track and field points we would be in good shape but I don't think it is going to happen. And tennis at CS has always been rough for us and football isn't as promising this year. It will be tough and some teams will have to pull through for us to get it this year.

Bill, the little one arrived Tuesday. Her first receiving blanket was of course a longhorn blanket

Great to pick up women's swimming as that was a 50/50 given that aggy beat us pretty handily at nationals last year. We still need to get two more of the wildcard points from football and the two golfs. That is assuming we can get the two tennis points and baseball and at least 1 full point out of the basketball and softball. That seems to be best path to 9 1/2.

I am still very wary of retaining the trophy this year but you never know, of course football doing so bad is probably coloring everything poorly. Now that the newest Longhorn fan is finally here, maybe they will turn it around for her.

As an update all events in 2010 are over and we don't have anymore until January. We have probably lost the showdown outright this year even though we leald 4 - 2. The thing is that the Aggies will probably sweep us in track and field and golf which are six points. Our men's golf team may turn it around but probably not this year. Then as usual they will get 1 1/2 points by sweeping our women's basketball team and spliting with our men's basketball team. That would give them 9 1/2 points and they should get at least a split. That would give them the ten points needed to win outright.
In the past we have had great success in winning NCs in sports but only one since the 2005 season which is a sad state of affairs to be worried about this competition. Track and Field accounts for 4 big points and the Aggies were smart enough to come up with the money to hire the best track and field coach in the country from LSU.

4 1/2 to 2 1/2 after the two basketball games last night. Nothing has changed in Bill's analysis. The womens basketball team really needs to come up with an upset in Austin or the men need to win in BCS. Even then Texas needs to win both Tennis points, baseball, mens swimming, and no worse than split softball.

The path to 9 1/2 points means Texas must get an upset somewhere and hold the points in which it is favored.

FWHORN it would make a big difference also if we could get a point out of the T&F sports or golf but I still don't think it will happen this year even though I think we will start to be more competitive hopefully in these sports.

The men's basketball getting the full point last night helps a lot. Now all Texas needs is to get the points it will be favored in to get a tie and retain the trophy.

That means splitting softball, winning both tennis points, baseball and men's swimming.

I agree FWHORN. That win last night has improved us greatly because in the past few years we have split in men's basketball and got swept in women's basketball which will probably happen again. We now lead 5 to 2 1/2. We got a shot at retaining the trophy with a tie. As FW has said we need to keep winning the points where we are favored. It is unfortunate that our football and especially our volleyball team lost us 1 1/2 points and the real shame is that we had no business spliting with the Aggies in volleyball. We would have a chance to win it outright if we could just get one point in the track and field or golf sports but unfortunately even though we are improving we are not quite there yet probably. We will see.

Men's win doesn't count towards the trophy.

Texas won, but they had lots of problems with the aggies.

The match that counts will be in College station and if we don't play better, UT will lose!

crap. thanks for the clarification. i always get confused which ones count and which do not. oh well...

tamster below is a schedule of what counts. All are decided head to head except cross country, track and field, and golf. These are decided at the Big 12 championship and the team that gets the most points wins the point in these events.

Ironically the winner of the point doesn't always to the best. For example a few years ago in soccer we lost to the Aggies in the season and they got the point. But in the 8 team Big 12 championship we beat them and in the playffs we beat them at CS and advanced farther in the playoffs. I will trade post season success for the lone star point any day even though I still prefer to also win the event for the year.

Texas picks up the expected point in mens swimming today and is now up 6-2 1/2. No change in any of the analysis with the point today. Horns need 3 1/2 from tennis, baseball and softball to tie and retain trophy.

That tennis match in B/CS will be tough as aggy has more ranked singles players than Texas and will have the huge home court advantage.

Men's golf is doing well this season and may be a possible upset but the general thought on that favors aggy.

There are 2 1/2 points on the line this weekend in the Big 12 Indoor Men and Women's Track and Field Championship and Women's Basketball. Unfortunately the Aggies will have to be favored to sweep us even though I wish we could somehow get a split in the Track and Field competition. We are getting better but I don't think we have caught up with the Aggies yet. Women's Basketball will now probably lose a double digit in a role to the Aggies which is getting old.

Unless Texas A&M over-works their star runners in multiple events, women's track actually has a pretty decent chance to upset for the crown. will be interesting to see who Henry puts on those heat sheet. My guess he will ask many runners to double, as TX, Nebraska and OU may not be far too behind.

Hey longhorns06 do you think we might have a shot at either the Men or Women's Golf points this year? We have had some good recruiting but may be a year away.

As expected the Aggies took the Indoor Men and Women's Track and Field points and it is now UT 6 A&M 4 1/2. We are getting better but aren't there yet in the Men's part but the women really made progress and were edged out by half a point and that was without B. Nelson. Man what could have been. Still the future is bright and maybe we can get it next year. Track and Field really hurts us in these competition.

Tomorrow unfortunately the Aggies should get another half a point as it looks like the Aggie Women's basketball team are going to beat us for the tenth straight time. Double digits. That is getting old.

Overall everything going as FW and I expected but our Women made a good try but just not quite good enough.

Aggies get the Women's Basketball point as expected and the score is now Texas 6 A&M 5. The UT women played them close today but as far as this competition is concerned the bottom line is we have lost ten straight to the Aggies and are in a bad position. Hopefully our Women's Track and Field Outdoor team can get a point for us but this getting swept in T&F sports and women's basketball has really hurt our chances here in the past.

Womens tennis as expected went for the Horns meaning it is now 7-5 but that doesnt change any of the analysis as that point was expected. Horns still need 2 1/2 from mens tennis, baseball and softabll or an upset somewhere.

Right you are FWHORN and a great job of our women's tennis team in getting this valuable point. Everything as we have analyzed. Go Horns!

A critical half point is on the line in Austin tonight at 6:30 P.M. as the Horns play the Aggies in softball. We need this game so everyone in Austin please go support the Horns if you can and be vocal. So far everything has happened as FWHORN and I have predicted. To retain the cup we still will need to win in Baseball and Men's Tennis and none of these are give mes. Especially Tennis where the men have to go to CS and the Aggies play extra tough there. Our softball team has to go there later so that is why it is critical for them to win tonight as far as the cup is concerned. The other available points are Men and Women's Track and Field and Men and Women's Golf where the Aggies are favored. It would be great if we could take one of the points in those last four sports. But right now we need to support our softball team. Go Horns!

i don't think you can say the aggie's are favored in men's and women's golf. a&m men are ranked 7th and horns 11th, and our women are ranked 24th and aggie women 27th in the golfweek poll. our men are ranked one place ahead of the ags in the coaches poll. squads are essentially viewed as equal on both sides - of course ags could win both but so could the horns. you could say the results could go either way but not that ags are favored. would definitely be nice to win the softball game tonight - let's go horns!

With softball last night giving half point to horns it is now 7 1/2 to 5. Two full points still need to have no worse than a tie. With track anf field not a realistic possibility that means men's tennis, baseball, the other softball game (worth other 1/2 point) and the two golf teams need to come up with the last two points and hopefully 2 1/2 to win it outright.

FW you don't think our Outdoor Track and Field Women's team have a shot? They lost by 1/2 a point in the Women's Indoor Track and Field and that was without one of their main runners. Oh what might have been. Of course there is a difference between Indoor and Outdoor and the Aggies would still be favored but only slightly.

Bill, not only do I not see us close in outdoor T&F, I think aggy might win two more NC's this year outdoors. those teams are stacked and while Texas is getting better we arent yet in their class. Byrne brought in the best track coach in the country for a lot of money (comparitively) and that investment has paid off. now i havent followed golf all that much but from what overseas has above maybe there are possible points there.
