St. Johns vs. Horns

I think Max Grubbs is getting the start.
Yep. That's what they're showing on the St Johns game preview.

No. 15 Baseball preview: St. John’s - University of Texas Athletics

I've liked Grubbs ever since we signed him. Starting a game is a big move up for him. Last year was a growing and learning process. Grubbs is mostly a sinker/slider pitcher who gets a lot of ground balls. When he's on, he can really paint the corners well with a fastball that has some movement to it. He gets real pumped up on the mound and is a high intensity guy. Right now, think of him as a sort of Tristan Stevens light. Hopefully, as the year goes on, you can delete the "light" part of that.

In an interview late last year, All-American Lucas Gordon singled him out and went on-and-on about what a good pitcher Grubbs was. Max Grubbs starting for us on the mound shows both good recruiting and good pitcher development by Pierce and the staff.

Hook 'em Max Grubbs!

This guy isn't LBJ, but he's not chopped liver either. He's just a Redshirt Freshman, so it's unclear how well his stuff works against college batters. He's from Western New York State and signed with U. of Alabama, where he redshirted last year, before transferring to St Johns--so he can't completely suck.

Fastball sits in the high 80s and reaches up to the low 90s.

He throws a curveball, a change-up, and a slider, each with just so-so spin rates at this point in his development. This guy is no Charlie Hurley, Hudson Hamilton, or Easton Tumis with his breaking stuff. But he does have a full arsenal of pitches. Per the scouts, Chaffee sounds like a guy who might be really good in 3-4 years, but he's still a development project for now. Basically, a promising young talent who has yet to arrive.

"CEVETTE'S TAKE: Chaffee stands 6-foot-2, 170-pounds and all has all the signs of a next-level arm. His mechanics are quick with some front-side drifting down the mound, luckily his athleticism allows his arm to catch up to his body and repeat his release point. He shows consistent feel for three advanced pitches, including an upper 80's MPH FB that has natural tail and life. As the lean lanky frame continues to develop expect the FB velocity to keep climbing, settling in the low/mid 90s.

My crystal ball can already see the lefty wearing a professional baseball uniform in his future. [per Dan Cevette - Director of Scouting Prep Baseball Report and former Triple-A player in the Pirates and Indians organizations]

"Coming out of high school, Chaffee was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state of New York by Prep Baseball Report. He was also ranked as the No. 7 left-handed pitcher in the country by Perfect Game USA.

His success at the high school level did not translate to the college level, however. Chaffee did not make an appearance on the mound for the Crimson Tide."

I think we'll hit this guy pretty well.

finally a lineup change that in my opinion is a very positive move. I think Brown should have moved behind Schuessler but otherwise I like the line up for the most part. Personally I would flip/flop brown and Schuessler, I’m expecting a lot of runs out of this order though, this one is still pretty formidable.

Swindell said he saw St. John's bus at Terry Black's on Barton Springs this afternoon. Now I'm all about Texas hospitality, but...on gameday can't we just put 'em up in a Manor Motel 6 and cater in Bill Miller's?

Another single to CF.

Runner advances to 3rd. It was a hit and run.

Men on the corners, 1 out.

Grubbs digging himself into a bit of a hole.

Runner steals 2nd; ball bounced off Schussler's glove. Grubbs had been holding him on the bag.
