Spurs vs. Lakers

A lot of you are underestimating Gasol. Historically, he gives Duncan a lot of problems on offense -- a very effective post up player who can also take you out on the wing to shoot or put it on the floor. Now that he has Kobe, he can get to his spots a little easier. His length also bothers Duncan on defense. You folks like this matchup a lot better than I do. Saying that he's going to fold because he's European is ridiculous and prejudiced. It will be interesting to see if the Lakers decide to double Duncan. NO did almost every time he got the ball and dared them to beat them from the perimeter. Jackson typically hates to double in the post, so we will see if Duncan can take Gasol.

The Lakers are going to have a terrible time matching up with Parker... Fisher has no chance against him. Maybe they stick Bryant on him and let Fisher cover Bowen? Maybe we see a lot of Jordan Farmar?

Odom could potentially hurt the Spurs, but he shrinks in the biggest moments (way worse historically than Gasol) and he is useless with his right hand. The more looks the Spurs get against him in a 7 game series, the less effective he will be.

At the end of the day, though, there are two things that favor the Spurs: 1. Experience, as cliche as it is, against a team that has really only been together for a couple of months and 2. The Lakers don't play championship defense for 48 minutes. The Spurs just grind it out and grind it out and grind it out. I don't know if the Lakers are tough enough to overcome that. They are going to get their points, but can they get the key stops when they really need them? You could try to outscore Denver or Utah and win a series, but that **** just isn't going to fly against the Spurs.

I'm not saying Gasol will fold or that he's not a good defender. But I don't think he's as strong as Tim (not saying he's weak), so I'm not sure if he can keep Tim as far from the rim as Chandler could. Plus, do you really want your star post player guarding Duncan, rather than someone who can more afford to pick up a few fouls?

Kobe is an intense defender, no doubt. I wouldn't be surprised if Manu returns to bench duty so Pop can limit the number of minutes where he's going against Kobe.

Bill in Sinton and others: Ref crew tonight is Danny Crawford, Bob Delaney, and Jim Clark. Looks good to me - a very fair bunch.

The NBA wants a Celtics/Lakers Finals so bad, i have a hard time believing they won't find a way to make it happen.

I am bracing for some HORRIBLE foul calls against the Spurs.

On thinking it over again DKR when one considers the plane and hotel situation in New Orleans and the refs that the NBA chose for tonight your idea makes sense for them to save themselves for game 2 and then go all out.

as expected, the spurs are going to take game 1. as a lakers fan, it is infuriating how little they are trying right now. careless pass after careless pass, no aggresive driving, horrendous defense. it's like they don't even care that they've just thrown away 82 games fighting for home court.

No lead is safe in the NBA. Teams keep coming back from 20 down time and time again.

High drama, but it's going to give me a damn heart attack!

Reggie Miller just said that the Spurs will not be able to come back to win this series after blowing a 20 point second half lead. C'mon now.

Tough heartbreaking loss pulled from the jaws of victory, but I have a feeling this is going to be a long grueling series regardless of who won tonight.

It's silly to say that NBA teams overcome 20 point deficits "time and again." I can only remember 2 or 3 other games when it has ever happened. It is extremely rare.

Spurs shot 3 of 20 in the fourth. That is 15%. It is pretty pathetic. The didn't deserve to win after that. If they had hit 2 more shots they would have won. 2. 25%. They should 25% in the fourth and they win. Unbelievable.
Oh well, I'm still confident in the Spurs. They came out playing on emotion and ran out of gas. Lakers came out a little tight and tentative, then warmed up after halftime.
I was sort of disappointed thought, on the Spurs 2nd to last possession where Ginobili missed the three. There was 7 seconds on the clock and Manu was covered pretty well. He should have passed out to the top.
