Spring Game 24

There’s been about 7 Westlake players with success in the NFL. 2 of them were Super Bowl MVPs. Another is the GOAT kicker in all of NFL history. Another won the Outland Trophy and appeared as a guest on the Johnny Carson Show. We currently have 4 Westlake players on the 2 deep roster..one of whom was absolutely instrumental in the recruitment of Arch. IMO, Ethan Burke, was the Defensive Co-MVP with his batted pass for the pick 6. The Westlake Football Brotherhood Forever!!! We have embraced the hate for over 50 years. Westlake is the high school analog for the University of Texas.

Westlake has had its fair share of successful alumni, no doubt. *cue the X Files music*

i also have to say that was the most entertaining spring game ever. However i am kinda worried we showed too much. for example, the first td pass from manning to moore when the receivers criss-crossed each other and moore was wide open going down the field. and secondly the last td pass from owens to wingo when again the receivers criss-crossed and wingo was open in the endzone. Is that showing too much or am i worried about nothing. well, i suppose if you do it in any game doing the season opponents are on to it and they probably are on it already anyway even before this spring game. What is remarkable to me was this spring game was much like a real game. Usually there is plenty of stoppage during spring games for one reason or another but this one seem to play out like a real game. It was fun to watch.
I think Sark has won over every longhorn fan that there is even the most critical ones and i have been critical at times in the past. But i have realized that we had depth issues and now we have thorobreds that enable us to go full throttle. Oh and lets not forget the culture has changed dramatically from a few years ago. Every player seems focused and plays their best or they will be replaced.
Surely the horns "are back".:trophy::usa:

Every team runs dual crossing patterns.
What is concerning is our DB play was well....awful.

As good as out wr's were our secondary overall was not good.

True, Arch is certainly special and just like most football teams, the backup qb is always the one to lead them to the mythical trophy. Arch may do it. We exceeded expectations last year but we also had 2 very special DT that we no longer have. I think we are much better at lb but jury still out on db's.

Are we not at least a little concerned the defense gave up 69 points?
that is cause for concern.
But our QBs were dropping dimes even the receivers were well covered. and o-line did its job.
So we need to get more pressure on the QB. I think we are going to get a couple of DLs

Yesterday's performance by Arch Manning justifies a discussion on who will actually lead the Horns to National Championship. While Ewers' two brief series is nothing to be concerned about, Manning's release, arm strength, pocket presence and athleticism appear to be better than what Ewers exhibited last year. That said, Ewer's has real big game experience which can only be replicated on the field and in the moment. My bet is that when given the chance Manning will rise to the occasion. Certainly the next three seasons look very good at QB for the Horns.
History suggests that Ewers will go down this coming season. He is somewhat slight. Average build at best. When he does go down, I won’t be concerned. Manning is literally bigger, stronger, and faster. He has a noticeably stronger arm. He can connect on all throws. He’s been in the system for a year. If the supporting cast can hold up, I would expect a better performance from Manning than Ewers gave year 1.

Speaking of pressure, did Trey Moore even play yesterday?

And it’s the same guy failing as usual. This is why I said we needed to pay/get Jabbar Muhammad.

I didn’t see Moore play either, thinking he was held out? If having QE healthy for a full season were like selling a stock short, I would. History just says he can’t make a full season.
The go long stock strategy would definitely be Arch. He will be much more ready than Maalik was last year.
On the secondary, I was disappointed in coverage foul ups by veterans like Brooks and Holmes, man that has got to be corrected before September.

I watched on TV rather than driving up and back in those thunderstorms. Questions/opinions of those who did go or your TV analysis.

The DL seemed to get good penetration, but not get to the QB. Was this because they couldn't touch him?

It seemed that Arch & Owens were able to go through their reads (novel concept for a Texas QB), and even Jim Bob's grandson did the short time he was out there. Again, was that protection or holding up?

TV wouldn't show coverages. Was defense running soft zone resulting in wide open receivers or were DBs confused and not knowing their assignments? How the hell did WRs get 20-30 yards behind DBs?

Damn I hate trying to watch football on TV.

All the questions above do not change that this was the best spring game I've ever seen.

Best pass? Owens bullet to back of endzone that was threaded between two DBs. I watched the kid a couple of times in HS but didn't realize he was throwing the ball that hard. I think the last QB I saw throw that hard was Rick McIvor.

Despite key losses from 2023, I'm really excited about the Recever Room: WINGO, Bond, Cook, Moore, Niblett, Niblack, Golden, Helm... plus you got lots of pass plays in the playbook to Blue and Baxter.

Sark got a bigger tool box for sure. Hopefully QE has a quick start and the Horns come back from the Big House with their second W. If not, it'll be hard tamping down the QB discussion.

No problem with sideline interviews, but cutting the game video to show the interview was ridiculous. The young lady was a distraction and if she added something to the presentation I missed it.

Dispatch: Ffrench Ffrigate Johnson.

Just after an illicit $5 niblett on shore leave, the helm cook, surnamed Baxter said, Blimey! Pass moore Golden Bond, me wee wingo be nigh black and blue!!

On the 75yd TD from Manning to Moore, Fozzy said the defense was in deep thirds, and Brooks, who had that deep third, inexplicably drifted inside the hash which left 60 feet or so of wide open spaces to complete anything. And they did. Brooks needs to become better fast, or we need someone else.

Did not see much of the game. Last year the safety play cost them. Any sign of improvement?
No. Not even sure if I saw the Clemson transfer play in the game. If he did play, he didn’t have an INT, break up, or tackle. I saw Williams on the field in the second half but he didn’t make a play either. Taaffe was involved in a sideline play where he got trucked, and sadly it looked like he may have forgotten himself for a moment as he wouldn’t release the ball carrier for a few seconds even though both were on the ground and clearly out of bounds. I also saw Filsaime in the game quite a bit.

On that first long play, one of the DBs went ahead and switched coverage, the other stood their guarding open turf with no one within 15+ yards. It's good to expose these issues early.

Agree with all assessments on here - Arch and Owen’s both looked very good and WR room is loaded. Concerns are no break away long runs and pass defense is kinda sketchy, the long completions were wide open but boy is it nice to see the deep completions on the money.
