In combing through the box score the stats are pretty even for each team. But what the box score does tell me is that our strategy won the game. Our ability to run them off the three-point line was the difference in the game. Aside from the two or three times a busted play ended up with the ball in Mikesell's hands for a wide open 3, we kept them in check from beyond the arc. Good job ladies!

I told a friend of mine earlier in the week that we were probably going to need a really big game from our seniors in this one because our young kids would most likely be nervous. Glad JAT answered that call... very proud of the way she stepped up!

I agree with every single comment above. It says something that we had a terrible time for the most part, and still won the game. Our inability to handle their excellent press was almost embarrassing. But our seniors saved us. Our defense in those last 10 seconds was superb. I don't keep up with referees, don't know one from the other, but the calling was disturbing in this game. OSU is a super good team with a smart coach. His failure to save a time out may have cost them the game, though. On to Stanford. Whoever said it, we definitely have nothing to lose. No one in the world expects us to win, so we have no pressure. Just go out and play and see what happens.

I should know this, because it has been discussed on this board. But, of the three seniors, is there any chance that we get any of them back?

You have to include the mystery offensive foul on Sheldon and what could have been Harmon's 5th foul on that inbounds play. It all evens out.
I'll have to go back and watch the fouls called on Rori. At those times during the game, each seemed to be the correct call to me. Obviously, I'm in the minority here. As you noted, the fact that Rori didn't get called for her fifth foul was crucial.

And, I'm actually stunned the officials didn't call a foul on Aaliyah Moore when she made that amazing block with 20 seconds left in the game; not that I thought it was a foul as it looked like a clean block, but with so much happening in that OSU possession with the missed shot, players fighting for the rebound, and then OSU's second shot attempt, a bad call at that point would been painful, especially with the OSU bench right behind the official most likely screaming for a foul call. And, let's face it, bad calls are often made at critical points in a game; just thankful yesterday was not one of them.

I think our young kids were feeling the nerves obviously... Glad we got that one out of the way. IMO we have nothing to lose now, so hopefully we'll loosen up and play our best game against Stanford. We'll need it...
Nerves for sure, and just not experienced in those situations with the game on the line. In some ways, I was surprised Vic didn't have DeYona instead of A-Mo on the court defensively for the last couple of possessions; but, then I realize that DeYona would most likely be called for a foul if she had been the one trying to block that shot as she's too aggressive in her shot-blocking and not necessarily just going at the ball.

OSU took 6 more shots than we took which almost never happens. We both made 26 FGs but they made two more threes. So once again, we won from the line with 5 more (12-15) from the line. For a team that didn’t shoot well from the line, we have shockingly gotten there often and taken advantage of it in these later games.

OSU matched up well with us. Solid win.

Okay, historically it looks like Stanford once had a 6 game win streak against UT. UT currently is on a 2 game win streak. So, in my book we have four more wins to go before entertaining any thoughts of losing. TEXAS FIGHT on Sunday!

Earlier McGuff called a timeout just a few seconds before what would have been a TV timeout. My group watching the game was like “WTH? He’s going to regret burning that timeout.” Boom. When he needed it most, it was already gone. You never know where the game is gonna take ‘ya!
You know, Ohio State basically got a "free" timeout during the official review of that foul by Braxtin Miller on Rori with 10 seconds left as it allowed McGuff time to provide instructions to his team on what to do after missed/made free throws. Not only did the call stand as just a regular foul, but it also could have "iced" Rori by having to wait so long to shoot her free throws. So, that was another adverse series that we had to overcome.

Good! For goodness sake, JAT has a whole lifetime to design cars. Stick with what's important (and something you love).
Has Joanne already received her undergraduate degree? She strikes me as someone who'd also want to earn her Master's if the opportunity provided itself. She did mention recently that she has aspirations to play in the WNBA, so it seems like pro ball is one of her goals before joining the working world.

For Laruen, who I think would want to play pro ball, could use another season working at her basketball skills in college, and just improving in so many areas. Not sure what her chances would be next month versus a year from now as far as being drafted by an WNBA team, and making a team. Perhaps there's no difference, and going overseas to play pro ball sooner rather than later is her best option.

The way I see it on Rori's first two fouls... If she wasn't blocked on the first call, then she didn't commit a block on the second one. And the reverse is true... If Rori charged on the first call, then the OSU player charged Rori on the second.

I am open to having my mind changed because I didn't get to see multiple replays of the two calls. But my takeaway is that consistency is important in refereeing, and it didn't happen a lot last night.

I thought Rori was inside the circle, but I'd have to go back and watch that play again.

Yep.. being more aggressive and getting to the line and converting definitely is how we outscored them. And again, our strategy to creative havoc for the three-point shooters worked. Look at their percentages, and of the 3's they did make at least two (perhaps three) happened because of lucky breaks during busted plays that left three point shooters wide open.

That's a very good point that I did not even think about.

I think with Lauren being a "late bloomer" so to speak, she comes back next year. It could be that the transfer portal dictates some things. I guess we'll know once the season is over.

For those who like to visit other schools’ message boards, the Stanford board, The Cardboard, contains a few comments about Texas at the end of the “Maryland Stanford” game thread and on a new thread, “Stanford Texas Elite 8”.

They are concerned and respectful towards Texas. They understand it’s going to be a tough game.

My thoughts the day after:
-An ugly W is still a W
-Mowins and Antosucki both suck. Everything is always about what X team has to do to beat Texas. Even on LHN everything isn't always pro-Texas. Even Cat, Keith, Greg, etc. talk about what the comp can do to beat Texas. Not surprising though, everyone outside of the Texas circle hates Texas more than Satan.
-Lot's of good comments about strategy
-Vic did a great job, but, yes why do we keep trying to feed Ebo double/triple teamed inside against a taller opponent when she has a 2" vertical and moves like a turtle? Those turnovers resulted in big leads that vanished. Even when we got it inside, how many did her and Gaston miss standing right under the basket? They seem to have a good mid-range, but are weak right under the basket. Moore and even Lattimore seem better right under the basket.
-JAT has had a great SR season, but until the 2nd half of this year there was good reason for people for people to want someone else to get more minutes. Kudos to Vic & staff for how much they've improved her. I think she'll be drafted in the later rounds and probably be gone. Ebo is 50/50, but Audrey should definitely come back. That doesn't mean she will.
-Our younger players need to see when they're being baited. Someone may look open, but open your eyes and see what the hidden defender is doing.
- I don't want to face Spelman again, she is damn good and Mikesell can shoot lights out. And we know what Miller did to us at the other OSU.
- I think OSU had more pure talent, but Texas won with coaching and heart. Of course they nearly gave me a heart attack.

Both teams are better than the first time they met.
Things that stood out was that Stanford Missed a handful of open 3's. I think our defense is much better now and hoping we don't give up as many open looks. Also didn't we maintain the lead for most of the game? We survived run after run from them to win.
That should have told us something about the mettle and grit of this team.

While Braxtin Miller was starting to heat up in the second half, I kept having flashbacks to how well she had played against us while at Okie State as a true freshman (like 3 years ago?). Glad they kept going to different options instead of her as she seemed to be in rhythm with her perimeter shots.

If she was, then so be it, and I would retract my comment. That was a replay I wish I could have seen.
I watched that play again. Rori's left foot was definitely outside the circle, but her right heel may have been on the circle mark; really tough to tell. But, she didn't seem to have beaten Sheldon to the spot. Don't think Vic objected too much against that call.

That's what I thought too, but after they called Rori for the charge (the OSU girl slid in to Rori's path. she wasn't there first) I didn't think the second call was equally applied.
