Some Random Thoughts on Conference Realignment

I've heard a suggestion for a more academically oriented conference-e.g. Pac 8 with
Cal, Stanford, Wash St, Ore St, Rice, Tulane, SMU, Air Force

Very few TV sets aside, that would work as a conference until Free Shoes U wants in.

uta,

With due respect to your friend, Coach Broyles recognized that Arkansas was in financial trouble, so the move to SEC was purely financial and little or nothing to do with "respect".

This was before Johnie Tyson and John Hunt took over the program and built the new airport. People scream "WalMart", but the Waltons were Mizzou people, before the Hogs reeled the "800 building" into Fayetteville. During that time, there was a "civil war" in Washington & Benton Counties.

Arkansas is no longer the "Fayettenam" we came to know and love. I tease my Arkansas friends that it took thousands of students from Texas to civilize their school.
Who says they're civilized?

National Public TV will be the main sponsor and the contract will be sponsored by individual donors and Jerry Lewis reruns.

Saber - Let's get one thing straight. Former friend - Accused me of Racism - while not true, it's a long story.
According to him and other Arkansas grads I met, they were upset about 1969 and any other Texas victory over Arkansas. I saw bumper stickers complaining about the pigs getting screwed by "Texas Officials". They felt out of touch and disrespected in the SWC.

Coach Broyles might have had one viewpoint, but the fans had another.

Probably moreso now but when I went to the 99/2000 cotton bowl it was like their fan base jumped ahead 50 years from what I recalled. Not the classless hillbillies of old

Just in:

The Longhorn Conference of Death has been formed out of the ruins of conference realignment.

UT
UCLA
NC State
Stanford
BYU
Kansas State
Maryland

each team is also required to play Arkansas as a season opener in Fayetteville once every 4 years, and Texas Tech in Lubbock in November once every 4 years. A cupcake night game at Rice is permitted, but only if it’s forecast to rain more than 2 inches that night.

Your honors - Mr. Deez and MB227, where is OU on this list? I While I didn't go to law school, I stringently object to this MIS-alignment of the UT schedule.

uta,

If you are ever in contact with that person anymore, I have a story that will shut them up for good. It involves a conversation I had the pleasure of having with Coach Broyles. It was positive on both sides, but a very serious conversation that had it gone the other way may very have done irreparable damage to the Hogs athletic program.

I don't have the inside information some of you have, but Broyles struck me as a more worthy and honorable opponent (as a coach and as an AD) than most of our rivals. Now a good chunk of the hog fan base was atrocious, no doubt, but Broyles himself seemed like a pretty good guy.

Any coach who could command as much respect and genuine affection from DKR as Broyles got had to be a good man.

Not to mention that Coach Broyles was a member of Augusta National.

This may not be correct, but I believe he was the only coach with a membership prior to Holtz & Spurrier.

So now there are "rumors that most of the AAC will fold into the PAC including Tulane, SMU, Rice, UTSA and others with some schools taking less money to bring in SDSU amd maybe other non AAC teams. I really don't care about what private schools do with their millions but how does a public school justify these expenses? And now that I think about it I do care because private schools benefit from irrational government (and now forgivable) student loans.

It's time to start a trade school league so at least the student-athletes can get a high-paying, necessary job when they are no longer students.

I would also add that some lower attendance private universities and almost all the small colleges need to give up playing football. Just looking at Dave Campbell’s summer mag reminded me of just how many smaller colleges “attempt” to field and play football.
Just a ridiculous endeavor in my mind. Throwing good money after bad. Sometimes in business bankruptcy becomes the reality of a poorly run financial side of a business.
It appears some of our higher learning institutions may have to face the same reality.
A wake up call may be coming soon for the smaller enrollment colleges.

I wonder if that dumbass professor still has a job.

He/She shouldn't.
I’m surprised the PAC10 chose $$$ over virtue signaling (that is, accept lower $ to remain a conference, which makes them less competitive but still maintains the virtue signaling, corruption, and grifting maxed out at 10). Now they have neither. They really ducked up.

Can you imagine UTSA, Rice, Tulane, SMU v Stanford or Cal or OSU or WSU? The first group would sell out at Texas or at home. But no way at their place. And who would pay to watch the PAC network other than the school library?

It looks like Cal and Stanford are throwing themselves at ACC and Big has already dismissed their interest. Do you think SEC might consider Cal and Stanford if ND came along?

Hope not!!

they may end up as a part of MW conference...doesn't seem to be a good fit elsewhere.. Friend says possible MW teams to Pac but I understand they have 30m exit fee and SDSU couldnt ge t it done when they were wanting to be in Pac

Dave,

The SEC line ahead of Stanford & Berzerkley is pretty long:

Sons of Klem
FSU
GT
Texas Tech
oSu
UNC
UVA
Convicts (Florida & FSU won't let that happen)
TCU
SMU
Kansas
K-State

So the rumor is that the SEC told Stanford they'd take them in, but only if Stanford changes their mascot back to the "Indians."

:rolleyes1: :rolleyes1: :rolleyes1:

I know you are right but I got caught up in the fog of war. However, I would rather have GT, TT, OSU, UVA, UNC, TCU, and even KSU and KU than FSU Clemson, and Miami.

On Saturday afternoons, nobody gives a hang about academics. If they did, the Ivy League would be making Big 10 money.

They've got to salvage what they can out there on the West Coast. They could also lean on the state politicians for UCLA, Washington, and Oregon. If they can't keep any of those, then maybe:

Stanford
Cal
Wash St
Oregon St
Air Force
Colorado St
Hawaii
San Diego St
UNLV
Fresno St

+ a few basketball (and other non-football sports) only schools, like:
Gonzaga
UCSB
