So Texas Is #21?

If everybody didn't want to beat Texas...if we aren't in everybody's head...then there would be no discussion of making the Horns down a taunting penalty.
I have no problem with opponents flashing the horns down. I love the competitive spirit.
But it's kind of funny to me because when a longhorn decides to charge or attack doesn't he lower his horns to do that? So to me when they signal horns down are they saluting our attacking prowess? Just wondering

Watch the 1969 game once. You will understand.

Only if you are a bulldog!

I am happy with the #21 ranking. I will enjoy seeing us climb the ladder.
The last time Texas won the NC, the doubters were out in droves, even AFTER the game with USC. Texas could not win, others were more deserving, virtually no one picked Texas. After the game, Texas would lose 9 out of ten matches against USC. The playoffs should be expanded because the talking heads are often proven wrong and that does not account for the silliness that we can't prove wrong. For example, hownzre Texas ag and Cinci so high up last year and this but couldn't't manage to play in the championship, voted on by the same idiots? We all know the answer...

I thought #21 was an indictment on Sark and staff as well. However, I was listening to a preview of Iowa State and heard ISU returns almost all of its starters so each unit should be at least as good or better than 2020. It got me thinking about whether Texas will be better or worse than last year for each unit.

Offense:
QB - worse - I believe in the talent, but Sam was a 3+ year starter with a lot of moxie and won us several close games
RB - better - Bijan, that is all
O-line - same - lots of returning starters but we lost Sam Cosmi
WR - worse - lack of depth and loss of Smith and Eagles will hurt
TE - better - no losses and added Sanders
Overall - worse - a new QB and thin WR corp looms large for the offense

Defense:
interior d-line - better - no losses, more experience
edge - same - I think this is a team strength but Ossai is hard to replace
LB - same - Overshown is improved and Mitchell wasn't great but we are so very thin its hard to call it improvement
DBs - improved - Sterns had a bad year and the secondary in general did not perform well, even with largely the same players I think improved coaching will pay dividends
Overall - better

Overall grade to start the season is about the same as the end of 2020. We finished #20 in 2020, so #21 in 2021 seems fair for now. I hope Sark can be the difference in going 7-3 to going 9-3. Only 13 points separated us from being undefeated. Hopefully Sark can make up some of those points.
This is a good assessment.

We need to remember that the offense wasn’t a ball of fire last year, even with Sam. We sputtered, often.

It’s hard for me to believe that 20 teams have or return more talent than Texas. No way. Perhaps 10. So if I’m right, the ranking is either primarily based on the QB position or the voters believe that Sark and his staff bring nothing to the table. Wow.

I see us as 11-15 at the start, not 21. I also believe that this season has the potential to be very good.

I go back to X Misn's assessment. We have QBs who have never started a college game playing in a brand new offense, under a brand new coach. The pieces are in place, but they're all new. It takes time to meld all those pieces.

Also, I am yet to see a report that says the QBs are doing great. Everything I am reading says they are struggling. That includes Sark's comments after the first scrimmage. He was pretty pissed about the QB play. Similar reports from the open practice Wednesday.

One of these QBs MUST step up for Texas to win more than 8 games.

Texas can win 8 games just handing off to Bijan or getting the ball out quickly to our playmakers. Our defense will be awesome this year.

20ish looks about right to me based on how we did last year and who we have lost and returning. Kind of nice to not be overrated just based on the name Texas, actually. Iowa State makes sense given they were basically even with Oklahoma last year and return nearly everybody - I'm just surprised since sadly I would expect them to be ranked lower purely based on the name on the jerseys.

Can we just say hopefully the D will be vastly improved? You don't instantly become Leon Fuller when you've been Manny iaz, Vance Befor and To Orlano the last 10 years.

Kowski’s a top 5 D Coordinator. The real unanswered question is how well Sark and his O coaches will do when they don’t overwhelm every opponent with (often vastly) superior talent.

There was only one Coach Fuller, nobody else comes close, although I would gladly take Rick Lantz or Bill Bradley over anyone we have had since Leon.

I don't even know why they would base their prediction on past years. That's kind of ridiculous to me. We have a completely different coaching staff. Now if this current coaching staff was the staff of the past years then It might make some sense. Plus we've got returning players that were 8 and 3 last year.
The "new staff" thing cuts both ways. Even if the new staff is better, the players still have to get comfortable in the new system. Improved coaching may take a little time to be evident.

If you have the right name on your jersey, (we do), and you start winning you climb in the polls. In 1977 we started the season ranked 20th, by the time we played OU we were 5th because we were scoring 55 points a game, this Earl kid couldn't be tackled and there was this guy kicking 90 yard field goals. And this was pre-ESPN and every game being televised. Three years ago, OU had an open date and moved up 4 spots after a blood bath weekend in the Top Ten. Win, have the right pedigree, and the polls will take care of themselves.

We are (still) the Joneses.

:cowrose:

I expect that Texas will move up 3-4 spots.

Interestingly, this is the first time since 1984 that Texas has opened up being ranked in both polls against an opponent ranked in both polls.

Texas should move up at least 6 spots as numbers 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, and 20 lost. Number 3 Sons of Klem lost to 5 Georgia, but they will not fall out of the top 15.

I can see moving up as high as 15 or 16 in the new poll. What should be interesting - will ou drop a spot or two after a lackluster W against Tulane (while Georgia had a nice W against Clemson)?

How many ranked teams lived up to their expectations and/or hype this weekend?

Who has a QB?

Hat's off to Sark & his coaches. Yes, I was disappointed in what I saw, BUT this may be the most disciplined Texas team I've seen in a long time. No really stupid mistakes.

I think we saw a small portion of K's defense. It appeared that the D was designed to keep everything in front of you. Not much attack. It worked.

By the way Washington lost last night to Montana. Guess they miss coach k

Wasn't their defense that was missing. If you can only score 7 points against Montana and that came in the fourth quarter, may be time to channel your best Lou Holtz and fire your OC at half or sooner.

Agreed, based off those losses, I'm expecting us to land around 15/16. but its all for naught if we turn around and lose to Arkansas or anyone before ou and I like our chances against anyone on our schedule. Card is growing to grow leaps and bounds by this second game.
