Rick Barnes is an atrocious coach

He is a good coach, not a great coach. He is not an offense minded coach and it shows. His teams always have trouble with close shots and free throws.

barnes isnt einstein because he would know htat the very definition of insantitiy is to do the same thing and expect different results. that is, barnes continually has his players pound the ball into a congested middle even though the results clearly show that we do not convert the short shot against double or triple teams and miss the resultant free throw. if barnes doesnt want to set outside shots for hamiliton, bradley, brown, lucas or james, then he should expect this team to struggle because the inability to make free throws is a part of a bigger problem to press when one becomes frustrated as our horns continually force up contested shots that they rarely see go through the hoop. this isnt rocket science.

Well, not atrocious in every area, but when more than
THREE HUNDRED coaches can get their players to shoot
foul shots better than the Horns, then atrocious does
fit in that category. No question.

barnes won't take us to the promised-land and win it, just not a great coach. super recruiter though. if some of our stars had stayed in school longer then maybe but...

Terrible offensive coach and his lineup decisions make me want to pull my hair out.

Missed free throws and layups are not new this year.

I think people are just reading the title of this thread and posting now.. But the OP is talking about offensive atrocity, not over all.

Hes not that bad either... hes a great coach and we are lucky to have him.

I just wanna win damnit!!! Lets beat the **** outta KU!!!!!!!!

Do posters on this thread really think that it's the coach that makes a player a good FT shooter? If that's the case then Shaq would be a great FT shooter. Barnes' coaching has nothing to do with our poor FT shooting. That responsibility lies with the player.

I would like to see Texas recruit better shooters from the free throw line and pure shooters from outside. Most of these guys came to Texas as poor free throw shooters, heck you may as well blame their high schoold coaches if you want to blame Barnes. You are either a good shooter or you are not.

wouldn't Barnes be considered a GREAT coach, if he just had someone to coordinate the offense and coach free throws??

Look at his incredible strengths, coaching D and recruiting.

Is it possible he hasn't changed in the last several years but his assistant coaches have decreased in quality?

The upperclassmen on this team have pretty much always been relatively poor FT shooters, and now we add more of the same and we have a roster full of them.

I love how people continue to repeat "just shoot more in practice!" like it will somehow work. Do you honestly believe, in your heart of hearts, that they don't work on shooting in practice?

The problem with this year's coaching is the inability to get anything out of the guards with consistency. We have more talent at guard than any other position on the roster, yet none of them are capable of distributing the ball, scoring with regularity, getting to the FT line in the first place, or being held accountable for turnovers.

I got kind of worried when I read that Chris Ogden interview earlier this year. How Barnes "lets them come up with their own hours" or something to that effect. Seems like they could be doing something a little more wisely with their time, other than recruiting.

Just shooting in practice and fixing the problem are two different things. Just like a golfer has his swing analyzed and changes it to improve performance sometimes so does a basketball player. For instance if a few of our players would stop line driving the ball towards the basket they would have a much better chance of getting a favorable bounce that drops in. When you line drive it rather than put air under it you either hit the front Iron hard with the ball flying off or the back Iron with the same result. When you put air under it you have a larger margin for error and have a better shot of getting a ball to bounch up and off the backboard instead of straight back in your face. I think if some of the players changed the angle at which they shoot they would probably have much more success. It is the little things that make a huge difference.

Hubert Davis -- Texas needs to play Brown and Hamilton more as they are the only guys that can knock down 3s. I'm like... oh. do you actually watch the games???

its very simple. identify the hottest outside shooter and go to again and again unitl they d comes outside. today its damion. bradley was the hottest against ou but barnes abandoned him down the stretch and it showed. hamilton was the hottest against osu and it showed. why cant we pick and pop with hamilton or james lliek past horns did wiht boddicker and atchley?

I think we've seen his ceiling. Not that it isn't high, but it's not going to be truly elite. He just isn't good enough as an offensive coach to be championship caliber.

About time the heat gets turned up on Rick. I'm not suggesting anything remotely close to a change, but I think some criticism will be good for him.

This is the worst you can possibly do with a team with talent like we have. This is on par to a Top 5 football team losing 3 games in a row. Mack would be strung up in that situation.

Barnes is what many used to love to say MAck was. A great recruiter but avaerage coach. Barnes has done all that he can do. He is a coach who will get UT into the tournament every year, but he will always be outcoached when you get the later rounds. He has no concept on how to run an offense. Year after year our teams are described as very talented, great defense, and no offense to speak of. Unless we have a NBA lottery type pt guard we have no offense. On the positive side we are perenially ranked in the top 20, and get to the tourney every year. As long as we don't set our expectations too high Barnes is the right man for the job.

Maybe Barnes needs to watch the televised version of the game and listen to what Bobby Knight has to offer

BH - we agree completely. Barnes has skated by under the shadow of football. As long as we get to the tournament and get to the Sweet 16 and maybe a little further every once in a while, then everyone is happy. Barnes is a victim of his own success. We expect more now and all of the Longhorn apologizers on this board and otherwise are only continuing the same ho-hum attitude about basketball that has gone on for the past decade (and beyond). We deserve more and should demand it.
