Rick Barnes is an atrocious coach

Just because you have a bunch of great high school players does not mean you will have a great team. So if the Texas football team loses 2 or 3 games next year Mack Brown is terrible? Give me a break. Rick Barnes has been awesome for Texas basketball and is a very good coach.

As poor as our FT shooting is I think we still win the games we lost…..
I hate to say it but our scheme on offense is not much more than a scheme high school teams run.
We have little movement and heaven forbid we set a few screens. And when we do, they are weak with the defender having no problem fighting over it.

I'm just frustrated because I know how good this team was and can continue to be.
We have problems but I won't criticize them this again this year. Let's go 'Horns

I do not think Barnes is an atrocious coach. I think he is a top 25 coach, a top 10 recruiter. He is not a great offensive coach. Dogues is the only kid we've got who can create for others. Near apologies to number Zero on that, but his handle is still questionable in traffic. The formula has been the same for Texas all year. We wear teams out in the last 10 minutes of the game and break it open with TO's. It was happening yesterday too until Baylor got a 3-4 minute respite when our kid got elbowed in the mouth and the referees checked the monitor. I do smell a 6 or 7 seed by year's end, but at least I smell a seed.......... let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. Lame thread imho.

Let me start with.....................******* bunch of crybabies.

RB has UT in the top ten, loaded with great players and more coming and you ******* are still bitching? WTF?

By the way ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you cannot coach free throw shooting. It's very psychological if things start going wrong.

I have a good solution- have Rick Barnes hire an "offensive coordinator" to run the offense, sort of like how Doc Rivers uses Tom Thibadeau to run his defense with the Celtics. We know Rick can recruit and we know his teams usually play good defense. Why not bring in an X and O assistant to bring our offense to life?

If I had to rank them, I think that the everyone stand around while Dogus dribbles out the clock is my least favorite offensive play.

Barnes is only as good of an offensive coach as his PG allows him to be. Barnes does not have TJ or DJ this year. He has to actually coach offense and he is being exposed. Without a PG that can run and create offense, Barnes is useless as an offensive coach.

We lose at least 3 of our next 6, and maybe 4. A far cry from the #1 seed we thought we had two weeks ago.

rick's trigger is too short. i'm surprised that he isn't able to see that his team is playing so tight. it's obvious to the fans. it should be obvious to him. hell, when someone misses a shot or a defensive assignment, i get tense because i know that he's going to sit.

that was true in games before baylor, but hill and chapman never left the bench (and lucas shouldn't have) so the rotation has gotten alot shorter

Coaches shouldn't be responsible for players making free throws. They have been playing basketball their whole life; they should know how to make free throws by now. I think it is pathetic when I see college, especially NBA players, have such horrible ft %.

tiger, i have to say i disagree with your post for the most part. i have no problem with the criticism of a coach or the way the team plays. with that said . . . to say that Rick Barnes is an atrocious coach is about the dumbest ******* thing i have ever seen anyone post on these boards. ever. ATROCIOUS?!?!?! Really. You think Rick Barnes is an ATROCIOUS coach. are you ******* kidding me? Get a grip and pull your head out of the ground. ATROCIOUS. Yeah, ****, lets fire that guy. He sucks. In fact, he's ATROCIOUS. Let's dump him.

i agree that barnes is not atrocious. he's not close, but he is coaching poorly right now. he's got to understand that these guys are young. they need confidence. there is a fine line between constructive criticism and negative reinforcement. regarding the FT shooting, yes it can be coached. fundamentals can always be coached. the fundamentals of shooting, shooting with the same routine, etc. should be coached. saying that the fundamentals of shooting can't be coached is like saying the fundamentals of hitting a baseball can't be coached. baseball players have been hitting a baseball their whole lives, but they constantly work to improve their stroke. a hitting coach is paid to fix a flaw when he notices a player doing something wrong.

**** that was some ATROCIOUS coaching by Rick Barnes. I cannot believe how ******* ATROCIOUS Rick Barnes is as a coach. Can you imagine how bad we would have beat OSU on the road if Rick Barnes weren't so ATROCIOUS as a head coach? If it had not been for his ATROCIOUS coaching, we would have won by 30 instead of by only 12. We're 19-3. How ******* ATROCIOUS is that?

I can clearly see that the benching of Hamilton against Baylor scarred the kid for life. Probably gonna be a zombie the rest of the year because Rick doesn't know how to handle his players...

I was wrong about benching Hamilton I guess.

I guess sitting him out the whole game was exactly what he needed.. but I still wish we couldve had a couple of that 27 on Saturday...

When some of these young players play well makes Barnes looks so much better as a Coach.

I am a huge Barnes fan, huge Mack Brown fan, huge Muschamp fan and of course huge Augie fan. Texas is blessed with great coaches.

The first half was very frustrating as a Longhorn fan. It was much the same as what we saw against Baylor. I was shocked at what I was seeing.

With that said, Barnes made some great moves last night in the 2nd half. Putting J'Covan at the point, moving Dogus to a "defensive specialist" position, plugging Hamilton in, taking Pittman out - these were all good moves. I like our offense with J'Covan at the top and Bradley and Hamilton at the wings. That is a lot of offensive fire power. James, Gary, and Dogus can get the bulk of the minutes at the other two spots, with spot play by the remaining players on the bench.

According to Chip Brown, we should be starting J'Covan Brown instead of Mason. This will then not allow the defense to sag on Pittman so much. He feels with both Balbay and Mason, the defense can swarm Pittman and it puts him into a funk (which it shouldn't but that is the reality; he is still maturing). I got the feeling that Hamilton's breakout game was a signal to Barnes that you need to have this offensive firepower and threat on the floor and then Pittman will be unleasehed.

It will be interesting to see if Barnes continues to stubbornly start both Mason and Balbay....

Barnes made great adjustments last night after the Baylor game. Anyone that comes to this board and claims to know more than Rick Barnes just looks like an absolute moron. I too am frustrated with our play the last 2 weeks, but that is BASKETBALL. There is little room for error in today's game. A few bad posessions or few bad minutes of play can be the difference in the game. Texas gets everybody's best shot. We have not handled that well the last few weeks. There are many reasons for this.

As far as X's and O's, our offense got really stagnant the last couple games. I know for a fact this is not what Barnes wants. That would be like saying that Mack wants to run the ball every play. We all know that isn't true. It's easier to sit in the stands or in front of the TV and point out problems than it is to fix them. Our offense made major improvements last night although at times (1st half 15min mark til 8 min mark approx) we got stagnant again. But we came out and made it a point to get movement on offense and we also made major line up changes that addressed offensive concerns.

Be patient. This is a young team with a lot of talent but any time you play this many freshman you are going to have some ups and downs.

I have faith Barnes and our staff is and will continue to work hard at getting this team to play it's best ball as the season goes on. It's a MARATHON not a SPRINT. We got off to a great start and hit some potholes but don't count us out.

To clarify, I didn't say Barnes was an atrocious coach, I said he was an atrocious X&O coach. He's great at building the program and recruiting. Also I was venting immediately after the Baylor lost, but I do feel he's not a good X&O coach. Part of it is the expectations that this team should be a #1 seed but they are underperforming at this time due to coaching IMO.

I stand by my previous pronouncements that we shouldn't have pressed Baylor in OT. The only time we've been successful all year pressing is start of 2nd half against Iowa State. Plus, to press you have to be aggressive & you can't be aggressive when you're over the limit. I have not looked at the game tape but I bet you Baylor's points in OT was almost all from breaking the press, at least that's how they built the 6 point lead & from Tweety Carter just drawing foul on Mason guarding tightly on the press. This was after regulation when Baylor has trouble scoring on our D the whole 2nd half.

We saw tonight how when you let loose the rein on the leash on a talented offensive player, they can just go off. Hamilton missed his first couple of shots too tonight. Once he got off, he played better defense, passed better, rebounded better, etc. He got his confidence back and just react & played and not think. Same thing with Brown, great play, low turnovers. He missed some shots driving to the lane, but those are open shots; his kind of shots and he should take it all day long.

I agree we should not play Mase & Balbay together. I remember before the season started coach Barnes stated Mason will start and there was a huge discussion on these boards how that should not be. Funny how that same issue is coming back now. Barnes should look at the fact that if he play the freshmen, let them make mistakes and grow, the potential for the team is higher than if he sticks with Mase.
