Religulous

So I got around to seeing this last night. Some thoughts:

I really never knew much of Bill Marher at all. I knew a bit, but TV is usually annoying so I didn't have a solid opinion. He is smart, wittty, and can be a real arrogant prick in how he delivers his point, esp. while in direct conversation with people. I didn't care so much when he is talking to the camera, but he could have use better tactics when talking directly to people.

The movie came off as I expected, but I will say he just doesn't pick on "dumb" people. He choose some interesting members of society and points out the silliness of the concept of faith. I wish he would have done more on Islam and the fundamentalism that resides there.

One scene really got to me. The bit with the Christian theme park and the interview with the guy playing Jesus. He was sitting there defending over and over.....then it shows him playing the role, carrying the cross through the crowd, etc. It just depressed me big time. I could hear the entire crowd go quiet and I could feel my heart sink to my stomach. It was moving, but in the entirely wrong way.

Overall I think its worthy of viewing by anyone. It sits well with my own thoughts, religion is bad for society and does more harm than good. Faith is irrational and although not up for criticism, it should be.

Never been able to wrap my mind around devoting your life to a book that was written by men 2000 years ago. How many people have claimed to talk to God? How many people have claimed to BE God? I just don't get it. And since I don't, according to you, I'm going to burn in a lake of fire for eternity. Nice. How this stuff sells I have no idea.

No offense, of course.

So, I just saw the movie. A few observations(none of this will spoil the movie):

1. holy ****, it costs $10 to see a movie now.

2. this movie is FUNNY. if you are a humorless devout believer, do not go see it. otherwise, it is good for about 15+ laugh out loud moments.

3. BM does highlight some obvious fringe elemnents.

4. some religions get skewered more than others.

5. seemed like BM's attempt to understand was genuine.

6. The snipets from other movies/cultural icons that are spliced in are hilarous.

7. there is some dead weight in this relatively short movie. could have lost another 20 min and been better

8. the end of the movie really highlights a point that BM is trying to make. after laughing alot during the first hour, the last 20 minutes is alittle sobering.

9. hopefully, this will help us kick the crap out of missouri tomorrow.

there it is, if you want a laugh and are not offended by religious questions, go see it.

If you'll excuse me for being a little off point, a movie has to be pretty compelling these days for me to go to a theater to see it. Either that, or I just want an activity out of the house. With satellite and DVDs, I'll wait to see Religulous when it's free and I can flip the channel if I don't like it. You kill an extra ninety minutes going to the movie when you add up everything. There are only a handful of movies each year worth going to the theater for.

Relevant, the founding fathers are irrelevant? Just frickin' wow.

I guess we are supposed to junk the last two hundred and thirty years? If this country does not hold to a bedrock of values (not an indoctrination of its citizens) the we are a ship without a rudder. I bring this point up because BM has decided to indict all people of faith and religious belief and he must be a poor student of history.

NEWDOC - Do you really think the American Revolution was faith-based? Really?

It was only "faith-based" in the sense that the Americans wanted a new form of government that WOULD NOT RULE on the basis of religion. They wanted a government where religion was free to express and thus government would not rule on the basis of religion.

But really, it was based on the fact that they didn't want to pay taxes without having a say in it. You know, that whole "taxation without representation" thing.

" There are only a handful of movies each year worth going to the theater for. "

agreed - I went to batman earlier this year on a huge screen with big sound and I cheered at the end of it(granted, I was the only one cheering and it was a little embarassing). Other than that one, and the Simpsons Movie, I just wait to see it.

I took a date to religulous, it went well - maybe I can get her to come to the house for a show next time.

Wow, just wow.

I meant, a spun up interpretation of a two hundred plus year old complex of events is hardly contributing to a discussion of contemporary faith and politics. Period. Wow.

Spare me the decline of civiliaztion lecture. My point was about rhetoric, not values.
