Religulous

You should try to be open mided and attend a conference where people try to look at faith with some reason. It would be easy to go to a nut house church and validate your beliefs. Try to find something where you think a somewhat reasonable religious person would go to and see what you think. "Openmindedness" is a two-way street.

I know you didn't pose the question to me. Never the less....

I've lived with this question front and center for 50 plus years. In my face, in my ears, ringing in my brain, and up my ***, so to speak. Social pressure, mind you.

How much longer, pray tell, must I further consider it, before the hearing is deemed fair?

To get back on point, I agree w/ Ryan that Maher keeps the condesencion to a minimum. He even joins in a prayer circle & allows them to pray for his soul. To me the heart of the film is: 1) his mixed heritage upbringing, 2) his quest for understanding the need for people to follow organized religions, and 3) the inherent danger of millions of people following flawed, manipulated translations of "faith" and how that puts the entire civilization of earth at risk.

There is great humor (see: actor playing Jesus re-enacting crucifixion to thunderous applause..and a 727 flying by in the sky, televangelists contradicting themselves, zealots acting like...well, zealots). There are touching moments (Maher's Jewish mother discussing but not explaining why their children were raised catholics & the reason why her husband stopped attending the church--their use of birth control--and the rest of the family's subsequent journey). And there are moments when Maher attempts to point out the danger of the group think mentality that is so pervasive in organized religion.

Too little time is spent, IMHO, pointing out how much of christianity is borrowed from other religions. And Maher's attempt to bridge the chasm between humorous--"look at these wacky people"--and serious--"these wacky people might blow our ******* asses up"--just isn't as cohesive as it could be.

Glad I saw it, but I wish it was better executed.

Ryan, Im not that religious of a person, I just think it would be fair to your gf to look at her side.

Funny story from two weekends ago. I walk into HEB and a guy had a wine display, giving out samples. First time ive ever seen this at HEB. I wanted free wine, so I walked over to the man who was talking to a lady. This lady is telling him about how evil alcohol is and how he is trying to poison people with sin etc.

I figured it would be best to come back later. So about 20 mins go by and I swing back by to try out the wine. Woman is still there arguing with the guy. He must have had some before his shift to be that patient.

Why would you assume that an atheist hasn't "looked at the other side"? That's why we're atheists. We've seen that other side all of our lives.

I'm agnostic and would probably agree w/ the general theme of the movie. If this was done by say Trey Parker and Matt Stone, I'd go see it in a heart beat.

However, I just cannot ******* stand BM. There are a handful of people I might literally just knock the **** out by seeing them in person. He's in the top 3...although I can't think of two others....maybe Bob Stoops and Bill O'Reilly.

I love it... Bill Maher is the enlightened one (as is Ryan, of course) and anyone who won't see it because

"they would never have the nerve"

"are irrational"

"believe in ridiculous fairy tales"

"are insecure"

"are immature"

If only we were as intellectually superior as you...

i haven't made a single claim about the movie.
you go well beyond telling people that they're "irrational". many people on this board share your views and those who disagree with them can respect their opinion, however you are somewhat unique in your inability to debate without all of the pot shots / marginalizing.
so you are right, it is your approach. besides being rude, it is very ineffective and more often than not you are probably dismissed as a baiter.

As much as you want to believe it ProdigalHorn, I am not the devil...I am just another guy who enjoys writing his thoughts on this site.

Not everything I say is supposed to offend, be sarcastic, or aimed at making fun of you...

In the simplest terms, this is what I meant:

Chill out man.
