Why even spend money on the ticket? Everyone already knows what you're going to say. Best movie evvverrrrrrrrr Bill Maher slurp slobber.

I can't imagine why anyone would go see this movie. With 6 billion people on the planet it's pretty easy to find some poor rube to intellectually abuse and it's even worse on film with the ability to edit out any quality counterpoints.

Religulous screams "axe-to-grind," sorry not that interested.

I hope I live long enough to hear Bill Maher say something funny or entertaing. One of my grandfathers lived to be 92 so there's hope.

As far as I can tell he has two jokes 1) Religous people are stupid 2) George Bush is stupid. I suppose that he thinks that if he keeps telling those two jokes several times daily, someone will eventually laugh

Might be an interesting thing to see which movie gets the most customers, this one or the conservative movie _ An American Carol

I don't agree with much of what is on this thread. Anybody actually seen this movie thus far?

George Bush IS stupid. It is not a joke, but a sad reality.

ok, i'm the one who's stupid for responding to this, but george bush has a degree from yale and one from harvard. how stupid could he be?

that's rhetorical, otherwise this thread is headed to WM (where it most likely will end up anyway).

getting in, i can understand. but do these schools just hand out degrees? i'd hope that they would be above that ****. i'd like to think that those who sneak in when they shoudn't have still have to do the work.

maybe not, since most harvard business grads are a little more successful in the private sector than president bush was.

Bill Maher is creeping scary looking. He is also an intellectual light weight. Picking a subject and just making fun of it is on the lower end of whatever.

I guess if you like this type of banter.

BM: You believe in Jesus.

Poor sap: Why yes I do.

BM: Your stupid. I own you.

If you watch 5 minutes of Maher's show, you hear everything he will ever say. Much like RyanUT's posts. Read 2 of them and you'll see every talking point he has.

here it comes..............

THE FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER

BM is an arrogant ***...who's convinced of his own intellectual superiority...

Sometimes he can be amusing, though....

Of course, that was 10 years ago...

Yale Law School doesn't even have grades. Its just pass/fail, and rarely does anyone ever fail. Its always ranked #1. The hard part is getting in.

I imagine other Ivy grad programs are similar.

We saw it on Sat. I'd give it a C+ review.

Pros:
*Maher explains his upbringing in a mixed faith (catholic father, jewish mother) household & his early conflicts w/ organized religion (the interviews w/ his mother are some of the best points of the film)
*It's an equal opportunity offender (christianity, judaism, islam...pretty much every organized religion is fair game)
*Maher goes for the joke at everyone's expense--including his own--which helps reduce some of the pomposity
* There's some funny **** & slick editing that brings about lots of laughs

Cons:
* Maher & Larry David don't do a very good job keeping the flow throughout the film. 15 minutes of editing would have done wonders
* It does a better job when it gets out of its own way & lets the various religions mock themselves vs. when it tries to send a serious message
* Goes for some easy jokes that are just lazy & predictable

In short, there are scenes that will make many people howl with laughter regardless of their personal beliefs. There are also stretches that will make you wonder why you didn't decide to mow the yard instead of spending 1'41" in a movie theater. And there are a few poignant moments that just might make get a person to think about some of the institutions that are deemed sacred & the inherent hypocrisy that lies within.

A more skilled director could have made this material really shine. As it is, the funny parts will be readily available on youtube in the near future & Maher's attempted message--that mankind's development is being hindered by its reliance upon outdated organized religions--will be tackled by more talented minds than his own.

Haven't seen the movie, am not religious but am not trying to convert anyone.

Sooner or later, everyone's group is the butt of the joke. The majority seems to think they are excluded. Not so. The religious are the vast majority.

Take it with a smile. Grace, you might say. Its your turn.

The sad part of this thread are the people who have not seen the movie, and would never have the nerve to do so...attacking Bill Maher as their defense.

My girlfriend of 8 years was raised southern baptist and "prays", goes to church with her family, and believes in the necessity of her faith.

She HATES Bill Maher because she feels he is a sexist and rude...probably for many of the same reasons the people on this thread hate him.
Amazingly, she decided that this movie would be worth seeing with me. I was very impressed with her open mindedness, unlike many on this thread.

She came away saying that she has new found respect for Bill Maher because he was not condescending and just asked questions...that is what it is to be a rational human being.
I did not want to dive into the question of whether she still "Believes" but I have a feeling she is beginning to see the irrationality of the beliefs. I am sure the studying of Evolution this semester of college has also opened her mind to the ridiculousness of these biblical fairy tales.

I understand if you are so insecure in your beliefs that seeing a movie that brings in to question why you have those beliefs is off limits, but just attacking the messenger is immature.

I found the movie to be interesting and funny as hell (No pun intended).

Maher loses the condescending nature he can portray sometimes on his show. He simply asks questions of religious people that are unanswerable because the beliefs held by so many are inherently irrational. Obviously the people twist themselves into pretzels trying to rationalize their answers, and that leads to many laughs.

I'm not going to see this movie and it has nothing to do with being "close-minded". With limited $'s for entertainment, it's a personal choice not to spend them on this movie.
