I feel good about Texas going 6-6, but with the teams the Angels are playing, they very well could go 10-3. However, Friday the 23rd the Angels have to play the A's after a red-eye back from Toronto. Their season very well may turn on this game.
I'm thinking 8-4 finish. But even if the angels go nuts and finish 13-0, Rangers would get the WC. Heck, I think if the Angels go 9-4, they would get the wild card. Boston has 3 more with TB and 3 with NYY and the sox stink right now. TB has 7 with the yankees.
After this weekend, the Angels could be closer to the Wild Card than to the Rangers.
I'll be watching the Angels-Toronto series very carefully, because I think this is where the Angles slip. Lose 2 of 4 to the Blue Jays, and it's over, imo!
Rangers miss out on chance to push lead to 4.5 as they lose to Seattle 4-0 but Angels loss in Baltimore means magic number is down to nine with 11 to play.
5-6 over last 11 forces the Angels to go 9-3 over their last 12 just to tie. Still a numbers game at this point and the good news for the Rangers is that the numbers are getting smaller.
Baltimore takes another from Angels. Rangers lead by 1 in 8th at Seattle. Chance to gain two games on magic number with at least one already guaranteed.
Update: Rangers win 7-6 to push the lead to 4.5 and the magic number down to 7 with 10 to play.
Rangers trail Detroit by one game in race for second best division winner record and chance to have home field advantage in first round against W/C winner as well as avoid Yankees in Divisional series.
Great day for the Rangers - a win in Seattle and a loss by the Angels to Baltimore. This was a good time to take advantage of the Angel loss - the Rangers will face Hernandez tomorrow, and that's always a tough assignment.
Once the Angels finish in Baltimore, they will have a tough four-game series in Toronto. If the Rangers can win in Oakland and get some help from Toronto, it could be all over before the final series in Anaheim.
Fellow Zealots, we must continue to cheer hard and refine the mojo recipe! The fat lady may be tuning up her voice, but she isn't singing yet!
Rangers take rubber match in Seattle 3-0 (another shut out for this staff) to move the magic number down to 6 with 9 to play. The Angels did avoid a sweep in Baltimore so lead still stands at 4.5.
Rangers travel to Oakland for three starting Tuesday with a rest day tomorrow while Angels who have ten left and no rest days the rest of the way start 4 game set in Toronto.
Detroit beat Oakland so Tigers have one game lead on second best record and the Devil Rays are making W/C very interesting beating Boston to close within 2. Red Sox still have series with Yanks and Rays have 6 left with NY.
^Beating the Tigers record would mean at least one series with home field advantage, so it would help. If the Rangers overtake the Tigers' record, if I understand correctly, it would mean the Rangers would host the Red Sox while Detroit went to New York for the first round.
so the chance to host the wild-card means the last series against the Angels will mean something, unless Washington decides setting the rotation is more important.
Looks like it might be Tampa again.
refreshing my memory, last year we beat the Rays on the road, then the Yankees on the road?
iow, if we host a wildcard series we would be better off this year than last year?
Rangers take night off and Angels lose in ten to Toronto so magic number is down to 5 with 9 to play for both Rangers and Angels. lead is 5 full games. Rangers now with real chance to wrap this thing up at home this weekend with a few wins on road in Oakland over next three days.
Detroit had night off so of more growing importance no movement in that race for second best division winning record.
Sure would be nice to clinch the West before going to Anaheim for the last series. Four wins against the A's and the Mariners and one more loss by the Angels would do it!
now that the division title is certain to happen, what do you do with your pitching staff? Do you play it out straight and try to pass Detroit, or do you set it up for your perfect rotation for the first round?
Same question for Detroit, they'll have to be scoreboard watching as well, unless they plan on winning every remaining game, which is possible, since they just got through winning 12 in a row.
this is unreal, we are on the verge of being tied with Detroit!
2 more innings, and we're tied. Now here is another twist, the Angels have an outside chance at the wildcard, and I heard Tom say we would play Detroit if the Angels get the Wildcard.
Can you imagine a series against Detroit, especially one where we're the home team? That would be fun!
Rangers beat Oakland 7-2 to start series in East Bay and magic number is now 4. Angels win in Toronto so lead is 5 games with 8 to play.
Detroit loses so Rangers are now tied with Tigers for second best record in AL, Tigers are in Kansas City today.
Boston continues to collapse but TB loses as well so W/C lead for Red Sox is 2 over TB and 3.5 over Angels.
Right now the best scenario is Rangers win west with second best record and get homefield advantage in ALDS against a Boston team that stumbles into playoffs with zero momentum or confidence. Since Rangers and Angels end year with each other hard to see scenario where Rangers get second best record and Angels get to W/C.
Rangers continue their complete ownership of the AL West teams. The difference this season between Texas and the Angels is record against their division with the Rangers an incredible 34-16 against AL west teams while the Angels are just 26-25.
Rangers, Angels and Tigers all win. So Rangers lead in west is 5 games and magic number is 3 with 7 to play. Rangers and Tigers still tied for second best record and improbable as it may sound the Angels are now just 2.5 back of collapsing Boston along with TB.
Interesting next four days ahead of that final Texas-Angels series next week. Rangers in great shape to win division this weekend at home.
Dang it. The Rangers let one get away as Lewis gives up a solo home run to Weeks (his first of the year) in the 6th, Oliver allows an inherited runner to score in the 7th (getting a blown save), and Mike Adams takes the loss by giving up a single run in the 8th, all of which results in a 4-3 win for the A's.
Magic No. still at 3. Hopefully, the Jays will trip up the Angels tonight and get it down to 2. Otherwise, the Rangers will have to take care of it on their own against the Mariners this weekend.
Toronto with the walk off wins 4-3 and now magic number is 2 with 6 to play. Baltimore also came through for us so Rangers still in dead heat with the Tigers (though dont have tiebraker so must win that race).
Angels hurt their W/C chances as they are 3 back of Red Sox and 1 back of TB who trail the sox by two games.
