Random Season News

i'm just saying it's a bit cherry picking to take out their good games. had the good games been at the front of the season, they'd never have been that low through 9 games.

It's fair to say we sucked WAY TOO OFTEN.
Way too often in just the osu game alone

Sam Ehlinger is still dealing with the rib injury
Rib cartilage, to be more specific. Evidently the early workouts aggravated it again. Luckily, he does not need to bulk up more and knows the playbook, so he can dial it back a little and heal this Spring.

Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger dealing with pre-spring camp injury

This could mean we will see more Hudson and Thompson during spring practices. With Bijan coming on board and Whittington being well trained at RB and available in a crisis, I wonder if Roschon might be back in the QB room for Spring?

What he probably needs to do is some form of either martial arts or Pilates. it sounds like an issue with a stiff torso.

If Vernon has already broken 300+ I highly doubt we will ever see him on the outside. Keep in mind that around 19 years old men go through a muscle hardening process where their muscles become more dense and they basically gain about 10 to 15 lbs. He is going to have to lose about not only the original 15 to 20 lbs of baby fat but another 10 to 15 lbs after that to compensate. I don't think he has enough to do that, at least not from the pictures I've seen of him. I knew by his pictures he was destined to play a 3 technique but I had hoped he could play a 4 for his freshmen year.

We want him on the outside. At least ealy in his career. Maybe later inside.
He is supposed to have developed a new nutrition plan to get him back under the 3.

He is going to have to diet like a wrestler if he wants to get back to 290 or less. A good DE needs to be about 265 to to 280 that is for the strong side. Weak side should be under 270.

Everyone, vote! Because your vote matters.

Geoff and his "staff" are getting ahead of the COVID issue and they need your input!

Make believe and get this man some clicks.

Scipio Tex has a state of the program piece out

"System Familiarity/Position Teaching
It's not just about the players getting accustomed to new roles and a new system, but pulling through the basic positional teaching that has been missing from the program in several key areas. Beyond my systemic criticisms of Orlando or the inconsistent offense over the second half of the season, it went much deeper. At minimum, this was a poorly coached football team in the secondary, at WR, at LB. And the system didn't play to team strengths on the DL. When Malcolm Roach drops a 1.68 10 yard split at the combine at 296 pounds and Texas couldn't find a way to let him take gaps or attack the passer more effectively (meanwhile, Ossai plays his position of the week) for a defense that was blitz heavy but pressure poor, you're not playing the hand very well.

If the coaches can create a conceptual understanding of the larger system now, there's that much more time to devote in the spring practices to teaching players football and developing their skill level. Everyone will be writing and talking about the system install. That's fine. I'll be tuned in to teaching at the position level. A system is only as good as the player's ability to understand and execute it with the tools God and his position coach gave him. The way to beat college offenses isn't reliably outguessing the opposing offensive coordinator. It's putting talent out on the field that understands the scheme they're running, but with the individual autonomy to read, react, and be football players, not just mindless Xs running to spots. No more gridiron Battleship. ....."

Scipio Tex: Big Picture Spring Program Thoughts - Inside Texas
If we get this fixed, you are going to see a big improvement next year, like CFP improvement.

I see we really now have a big offseason - in every sport! Sucks because softball looked really good, plus tennis and golf. And baseball was looking good with many young players.

Some more from Inside Texas/Scipio generally --

When this coaching staff talks this spring and summer, I'll be interested to see how much they talk about teaching and fundamentals beyond the platitudes. Because if it's all just attitude and toughness redux, I'm not sure the guy who just had to fire 70% of his last staff did the necessary introspection.

....... Unfortunately, we all made the mistake of focusing on S&C and culture, simply assuming that basic football teaching was happening. It wasn't. We found out some of the position coaches were frauds, others were either ill-suited or constrained by a DC who would rather script than teach improv.

Addressing the second comment first: Yes, we did. We made necessary critiques throughout the season but we didn't foresee the issues, beyond Orlando's scheme, being a potential defining problem before the season. We even put more blame on the players in some cases, e.g., corners tracking the ball than maybe we should have.

We won't make that mistake again, though sometimes we're beholden to sources who might not know exactly where to place blame.

I asked about teaching quality and heard back, "The new coaches are really energetic and have done a good job of earning the player's trust early on. The coaches are detail oriented and want perfection. They're good at telling the players not only that they did something wrong, but also right, and why it was right or wrong. They're not treating the guys like robots. It helps that the offense isn't changing too much and that the defense is simple, but the player's understanding of the game seems to be improving." ..."

Sounds good, but the first real test will come in BR. In the military the unspoken rule is all plans go out the window when the first shot is fired. After that ingrained training and real leadership take over.
