I'm with you. I hate throwing a guy out of a game for a very close crown of the helmet hit. Trouble is where do you draw the line on what is egregious? So they've taken a zero tolerance approach which is pretty harsh. I just don't think there is a perfect way to execute this rule.Re: targeting in the Clemson/aOSU game:
Before this vague and ambiguous "targeting" foul, there was another penalty for leading on a tackle with the crown (top) of the helmet. It was called "spearing", and it was a 15 yard penalty. I suggest ditching the impossibly vague, and inconsistently applied, "targeting" foul, and bring back the spearing penalty. Spearing, 15 yards, with a possible ejection for egregious examples.
Of course, the original spearing penalty was at least as much for the protection of the hitting 'spearer' than the guy getting hit. When you spear, you endanger your neck, and risk a broken neck or even paralysis.
