Not petty at all. There is a Kansas City Mo and a Kansas City Ks separated by the Missouri river. In many places one side of a street is Mo, the other side is Ks.

The line only rarely follows the river (which is East-West while the state line is North-South). If you aren't from the area and didn't see the state signs, you generally wouldn't know which side you were on and would consider it all one city.
