no country for old men

Looks like the award trail has begun for the movie. It took 4 awards including best picture and best supporting actor for Javier Bardem by the New York Film Critics Circle. It was also nominated for 3 SAG awards as well. Should take down some good awards leading up to the Oscars as well.

The Link

this movie will garner the Coen Bros. more awards than all of their other movies combined. I believe it will be one of those movies that others will try to measure up to.

The movie was good if you want to talk about the acting, cinematography, sound, portrayals of west texans, etc

But my opinion is that if you have to read a book and have a 15-page long discussion about what the movie was about, the movie didn't do it's job.

It seems like the only people who really "get" the movie are those who read the book ahead of time. That always annoys me about movies, and makes them less enjoyable in my opinion.

I also think that it is en vogue to praise movies that are hard to understand and "anti-hollywood," not because they are that great, but just because they are different.

There were alot of loose ends in the movie. I get the whole moral angle of it, but there was just way too much randomness in it to make me think it was great. I was left wondering most of the same things that have been brought up in this thread so far.

Like I said, good movie for the filming, acting, etc. But I'm not drooling over it and calling it the best movie ever. But I guess that's just me.

What city are they filming in to resemble el paso from 1980?

Although El Paso really hasnt changed much since then.

I saw it. This flick is good but it's not THAT good. The off-the-charts obsession here is downright strange. A good movie gets killed when people talk about it too much. Y'all all sound like New York Times movie critic morons.

That doesn't make sense. The rich white guy in Houston was the buyer with the money and the mexicans had the drugs. Why would the mexicans have a transponder in the rich white guys money? They didn't get the cash b/c the deal never went through.

I suppose the thing to do is quit talking about the movie, then it will become a much better movie. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Good films, books, paintings, or music inspire debate and discussion among their audiences.

Just saw this at Alamo today. Possibly the most overrated movie since English Patient and easily the Coen Bros. worst effort.....just saying.

I also saw this today at Alamo Drafthouse. But unlike Bevo-Stevo, I liked it. I won't say I loved it -- yet I can tell it's one of those movies that I'll be pondering for days. In fact, I've already read this entire thread and found many of your comments both thought provoking and helpful for clarification.

I'm looking forward to a second viewing on DVD.

No Country wins the main prize from the Director's Guild. But what do those no talent Monday morning artist wannabes know about good film-making? If they knew what we here at hornfans know, it's obvious that the winner should have been the $200 million dollar grosser that got relatively little thread discussion, Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Um, I don't see any reason to worship at the altar of the almighty director. Do you think the guys that directed Alvin and the Chipmunks or Death Wish 5 is some sort of geniuses?

Further, I don't think anyone on the thread has called the movie a worthless piece of crap. There are surely great filmmaking elements to the movie.

I am one of the people who posted on this thread thinking the movie is flawed particularly in the last sequences. I don't ever say that the Coens don't know what they are doing with a camera. It's an iffy business. The most talented people in Hollywood can get together in a great spirit of collaboration and produce a dog of a movie.

NCFOM is a long way from being a dog. For more than three quarters of the movie, I thought I might be watching a classic.
