New next food network star

How ironic that the Red Lobster challenge consisted of taking a piece of fish and making it unhealthy and tasteless...

And how ironic is it that the Indian girl was the lazy one of the group.

Also, what's the deal with so many of them crying every episode?

No kidding what an emotional bunch of no talent jerk wads. The more i think about it the more this show pretty much blows. Perhaps it is too close to Top Chef which actually for the most part keeps its culinary credibility in tact. This FNS thing is a steaming pile of culinary dog breakfast by comparison. It really isn't about the food which I guess would explain Rachael Ray and her wild success. It amazes me that Food Network has shuttled what is most likely their two most taleted chefs associated with their network over to Fine Living. Those two of course would be Mario Batali with Molto Mario and Emeril Lagasse with Emeril Live, and yes I get that Emeril Live is somewhat an annoying format and is based largely on schtick. At the same time it is without question that in terms of american culinary creds he is way way way up the list. I still enjoy watching Batali on IC American, but i enjoyed the education and passion on Molto Mario.

The guy who seems to have fallen somewhat off the radar without reason is Tyler Florence. He's not a chef in the sense Batali is, but he's good in the kitchen and he's a great teacher. His appearance on this "next star" program surprised me . . . maybe he took a sabbatical and will have a new show soon.

he has Tyler's Ultimate. It is on sat and sunday morning and many other times slots throughout the week. It is a great show. Some of the things he has done on that show I have made, and all of them have been badass.

As long as Alton Brown stays on the air in any capacity, I'll be happy.

Jennifer had to go for sure. this is just not a great crop of entertaining individuals. think about this they took Emeril Live off the air, and took Molto Mario off the air. Would any of the remaning candidates on this show provide a better cooking show than either of those two that were removed? Hell the Dave Leiberman show would be more worth watching than the next food network star show. Yes I am still aware that they probably only care about the ratings for this show and not as much about those of the person's show who wins.

I'd been pulling for Jennifer - not because she has done anything particularly well, but because I thought her show concept was the only one (aside from maybe Nipa's) that sounded interesting.

However, she just never progressed and kept making the same mistakes over and over and over. If you aren't a great cook AND you can't present on air, it just isn't going to work.

At this point, I really have no idea who is going to win. None of them seem all that strong. Adam could be entertaining. He seems to have a quick wit, but I don't know that I'd ever use one of his recipes. I like Aaron, but his presentation skills are just awful. I guess the other 3 are the strongest because they can cook and talk.

I suppose I'll root for the little blond girl.

I loved watching Aaron silently chowing down on Adam's dish for about 30 seconds before stumbling over the presentation. Kelsey's on a roll, and Shane is as-yet unexposed. Adam's running on fumes, and won't go the distance. Watch out for the Dallas chick - she's tested and getting better every week.

Too much crying going on, though.

I've actually been quite impressed with Shane as of late. I still think Bobby Flay has a crush on him.

I'm not sure, but I think it'll be between Shane and Kelsey. I thought Adam at first, but the judges aren't too impressed by him anymore.

To make a prediction of whose leaving next, I'd say:

Aaron then Adam then Lisa leaving Shane and Kelsey with Kelsey winning out. But I bet Shane gets a spot of some sort. He'll be on a Bobby Flay show in no time. It'll be called "Taming Lyons - with Bobby Flay" and it'll be about Bobby teaching Shane all he knows.

a couple of thoughts here. The first is that presentation and on air presence is MUCH more important than food know how. Case in point: Rachel Ray. She never makes anything that I find that interesting, and while I find her annoying, I think that many find her quite charming. This is why she has that hour long show (at least I think she does) on network tv. It isn't a cooking show, but rather a show that she carries becasue her personality connects.
Do we really think that the on air personalities come up with all of their own recipes? I doubt that very much. I bet most of it is test kitchened with behind the scenes people, must like Throwdown dishes of Bobby Flay's are cooked and recooked with some food network staffers. All that to lead into this.
I just wouldn't watch a show with Aaron on it. It is too much of him stumbling over himself. I also wouldn't watch Lisa, although she seems to be the most qualified culinarily. She did a great job not jumping all over Jennifer in that last show. Who tries to loosen the lid of a glass jar by beating it on a stainless steel flat top? Really? Who does that? She had to be the grown up and say throw it in the trash you ruined it all.
Adam is the MOST entertaining. His culinary expertise is questionable at best. I will say I would watch his show though, because I think the producers would be sure that his dishes worked, and I think he would ahead of time. I also don't think he will make it through because of his bad cooking.
That leaves Shane and Kelsey. They are almost male/female counterparts to me. Both are good on air and know how to cook but are very young. They are both fairly entertaining and pleasant to watch. Shane has a slight advantage to me in that he seems a bit more polished and expresses himself better on camera.
Those are my two cents.

Jamie Oliver also has a good show on Saturday mornings. It amazes me that people can watch Guy. He belongs with the Icy Hot Stuntaz, not on the food network.

I'm not even sure why I watch this show because it really doesn't hold any entertainment value. I can't stand the hypocrisy of the judges and you can just see they are only trying to create drama for a boring show.

That being said, I was semi-impressed with Aaron last night. He did a pretty good job on the Rachael Ray show, but I wonder if that kind of on screen presence can last.

I thought it was pretty stupid for the judges to tear into Kelsey for not cooking on the show. I mean, think about how guest cooks come on shows like Jay Leno or Good Morning America. The guest cooks get the hosts to do all the work. It's part of the show, and that's what Kelsey was shooting for. I don't think the judges really cared that much, but they just had to add some drama to the show.

As for Lisa, she should have been kicked off the show then and there. I think the only reason they kept her was so Kelsey would have a roomy in Las Vegas and they wouldn't have to buy a second room for the guys. To just be silent for 3 of your 4 minutes on a TV show is inexcusable. She'd bomb on a TV show, and the judges know it.

Adam did well. I'm curious to see how he'll hold up. While I still think that Kelsey will win, I think that Adam would have the most entertaining show.

Shane, while not deserving to go this week, wasn't going to make it all of the way. He had a good run there in the middle, but they just weren't too impressed by him.

Well, it's down to the final four! Predictions anybody?

I think I keep watching it because there isn't much else on on Sunday nights in the summer. The judging segment at the end last night was a poorly done top chef knockoff. It's kind of stupid to criticize Shane for his lack of experience when you are the people who picked a 19 year old to be on the show

I've only seen the last two episodes, and it's a shame that E (guy from Entourage) got kicked off. He's the most talented by far. Keeping the alien girl was inexcusable and is proof that the contests don't mean anything. It's solely a ratings game. With that said, it's so obvious the blonde's the winner. Either way, Mangino approves.

My wife and I have been watching Design Star the hour before Food Network Star over on HGTV.

The commercials are killing me on the Food Network.

Here is something I wonder. How often do personalities on Food Network have to cook under pressure like they do week after week on the Next Show?
It seems that each episode has writers, and people who help the main personality cook. If that is the case (and as far as I know it is) then it seems that being a tv personality would be MORE important than being a great cook.
This makes this context almost completely opposite of Top Chef, or Hell's Kitchen. The people who win those shows, don't have to be on tv ever again. They are on tv to win a job cooking. The Next Food Network Star, is on tv to get on tv.

Now because of the above facts, I firmly believe that Aaron and Lisa have got to go. They just aren't watchable on tv. I will say they are probably the 2 people I would most like to have me cook a meal from the show. BUT that is not what this show is about. It is about being watchable on tv, and they just aren't. They both were awful on Rachel Ray.
Now, Shane had the most shy girl of all of them. He isn't going to have a cooking show with kids on it, so really, who cares that he can't get along with, or include a Girl Scout Brownie that well? His food is good, and he actually is watchable. The judges got onto him for talking about 'standard breading proceduce', what they didn't hear was he called it that and THEN explained what it was on the show by demonstrating it. It was great to me. One of the few times I have learned something on the show. (Not really because I know how to bread, but it was great to teach those who don't know how).
Shane should have stuck around much longer. With the ones left though, it has to be between Adam and Kelsey. They are the only two who have a shot at having a successful show.
