Got into this show last year with wife & kids.

Anybody catch the first episode Sunday night?

Pick your winner. I had the comedian, but she severely disappointed me and flamed. So now I've got the little skinny guy.

All I know is Lisa, the chick from Dallas, won't be around very long with her attitude... Kelsey is fairly cute.

In order of confidence:

1. Jennifer
2. Aaron
3. Adam
4. Nipa
5. Kelsey
6. Kevin
7. Shane
8. Lisa
9. Jeffrey

I think there are gaps between 3-4 and 8-9. Just a gut feeling.

Does anyone remember the actual ranking for this episode? I'm having some troubles finding it on line. I know the bottom were Shane, Nipa, Lisa and Corey (I believe in that order), but I can't remember the rest.

The ability of the city of dallas to continue to embarass Texas is really getting on my nerves. This Lisa chick already embarrassed us in the first episode. What a freaking disaster she was with her answers. And I love the city of Dallas, but geez.

Mia, I don't think they really rated the top 6, but the black dude paired up with that annoying blonde was called first.

Lisa made me cringe when she said she was from Dallas. Horrible person and I'm glad Alton put her in her place.

The comedian was awful, just awful. Embarassed for her.

the blonde was just too much.

Props to the 19 year old. He's way ahead of the game.

I wonder what happened to the "gourmet next door" chick from last year. I imagine she was too annoying to last as a show host.

I think her show came on like at 9 am or something. I can't believe they picked her. The bucktooth lady wouldn't have been much better.

Guy Fieri has worked out though.

Hey don't knock the bucktooth lady, she had a nice rack.

I saw wassernames show a couple of times and it was predictably mediocre. The fat guy who was set to win it would have been better... her just shouldn't been such a big ole lier.

The ability to cook on a moving platform with limited supplies and limitted planning time is an interesting challenge, but let's be honest, not a skill which will be much utilized by the eventual winner. Only Aaron and Lisa cooked well (NOTE: this is two good servings in a row by Aaron). Adam, Kelsey, Jennifer all came off well, even if their food wasn't great (or even good). And Jeffrey, Nipa, Shane and Kevin had nothing. As a group, one of the worst flame outs by the contestants across the board I've seen outside of Kell's Kitchen.

That said, the relay race I thought was very interesting AND on point. The questions were a good mix of the basic and the esoteric, and the penalties were basic skills. I would say that I wished the questions were harder so we could see more penalties, but I'm not sure you could frame the questions as easy.

Adam seems to be the winner so far on charisma, while Aaron seems to be the best cook (based off of two episodes). Jennifer and Kelsey are two sides of the same coin, which is pleasant for a reality show, but neither seem particularly appealing as a TV host. Say what you will about Lisa, but I find her entertaining and while I realize it is only french toast, it was good to see her show she can cook. Shane clearly has skills but he lacks discipline and point of view, both of which are characteristics of being young, I don't see how he can win this, frankly. I'm having a hard time deciding what I think of Jeffrey. He hasn't done anything notable (good or otherwise), but I just find him vaguely unappealing... I'm not sure what it is.

As to Nipa's blowout... she is in an interesting place. She is the only person who offers something truly novel to Food Network, indian cooking. On the otherhand she has poor coping skills (shutting down and throwing tanrums when pushed), she isn't flexible and so far she hasn't cooked indian food very well either... or at least the judges haven't given her too much credit what she's prepared. If she can get her head back in the game she has an advantage over everyone else in novelty if nothing else... but she is in a bad place.

When Kevin got paired with Lisa last week, I gave up on him. Yes she is annoying, but he just bitched and moaned, which didn't speak well for him either. This week he just kept on the suck, and went home for a decidedly unromantic crostini.

1. Aaron (+1)
2. Adam (+1)
3. Jennifer (-2)
4. Lisa (+4)
5. Kelsey (0)
6. Jeffrey (+3)
7. Shane (0)
8. Nipa (-4)

O - Kevin
O - Cory

Nipa should have been kicked off as soon as she 'quit'. While I don't think Kevin would have made it very far, he had less to work on than Nipa which tells me that they wanted to keep her on the show for the 'drama' of it.

I'm not sure any of these people would make a good host for a show. Of the remaining, I would probably like to see Jennifer or Kelsey end up as winners. Maybe Adam if he can tone it down a notch, but seeing the previews for next week, it doesn't look like he does.

Jeffery is gone soon if he can't provide some tasty food. His 'Soul' tagline will only be novel for so long.

Aaron is the wild card, but I don't think he lasts because he just does not have a good television personality.

Shane, the crybaby, won't be around for long either. His food has sucked and he's either cried about it or tried to make excuses.

Lisa and Nipa will be around until close to the end to provide good [reality] TV drama.

anyway, that's my $.02

Understanding that TV is in some part about spectacle, I think I would probably land on the Nipe side of the Nipa/Kevin issue. I agree he had less to work on, but he also has no upside. He isn't charasmatic, and he doesn't do anything different. On the other hand Food Network hasn't had an Eastern influenced show since Ming Tsai left almost a decade ago, and they've never had Indian.

As for Kelsey and Jennifer, while I like them both... I just can't see myself sitting down and watching either of them for 30 minutes... maybe that will change.

That said, if the field is really this weak... I think FN should consider pairing osme of these people up. I might actually watch a Jennifer/Aaron matchup or something like that.

I'm pretty much agreeing with mia's rankings. I think the Dallas chick rallied well, and if she continues to take the judges' advice is in for a long run.

My Top three after week 2:
1. Aaron
2. Adam
3. Lisa
4-8 field

Nipa wasnt going to win anyway and the judges sent a bad message by keeping her around. "You're on suspension?!!!" Give me a break. Bob the judge continues to be an irritant to me this season.

I did not watch it last night but will catch it later this week when they show it again.

I swear Kevin looked familiar when they were doing the promo ads for the show. I would have sworn he has been on the Food Network as a show host already. Jeffery looked familiar as well.

Lisa needs to understand we could care less if she wears designer togs and spike heels when she cooks.. Most of us will be in our kitchens in crocks, flip-flops or barefooted. Today's viewers are not interested in phony window dressing that has nothing to do with the food and cooking. I take it Lisa got off the "deconstructed" bit. Of course if she would have used the word simplify it would have put her in the same category as 90% of TV cooks. Everyone since Julia has been trying to show us the simple steps for cooking good food.

I think they might have purposefully made Lisa look over the top last week. That or she did a 180 after listening to the judges critique. She was normal this week and showed she could cook. It might be similar to what Hell's Kitchen did with Petrozza. The first episode made him look like an idiot. Now he's most likely going to finish in the top 2.

the difference is people in the US love and are interested in Italian food. It is really a part of our own culture now. Indian, not so much and I need not even mention Giada is a hell of a lot easier on the eyes than Nipa. If they want an Indian girl on the Food Network they should get Pame from Top Chef. I would watch her read a book!

No question, Italian food is more approachable in this country, but that alone isn't a reason for not giving 30 min a week to something more exotic as well. The Food Network is lacking in any real diversity. It is great if you like Italian, Southern, Grilling or cooking in a microwave, but there is more to food than just that.

In any event, if Nipa is the only portal to Indian, then I agree with you it isn't worth the effort.

I also agree that they need more diversified food shows. They need a reasonable Mexican/Latin cooking show, and I am not talking Ingrid Hoffman. I mean something legit. Maybe Rick Bayless or someone like that. I know he is not latin, but is there any doubt the man is truly skilled, and fueled with a true passion for latin food?

Nipa has actually cooked for me, and it was decent. And by cooked I mean she picked up the box lunches from Jimmy Johns she handed out to my office for her lunch presentation. I'm surprised it took all these years of obscure reality TV shows for me to finally personally know a contestant, but here we are.

Isn't Rick on PBS now? The same goes for Ming Tsai...oh well Food Network is all about the celebrity chef now anyway.
Oh yeah I would watch a Indian cooking show.

He was on an HD PBS channel this time last year. Unless something has recently changed, I haven't seen this show on the guide.

By the way, there was also another show on just before it that was a barbeque-esque show. Have no idea what that one was called but it was good and I learned a lot.

For that matter they could bring Daisy on board the Food Network for a Latin/Cuban cook. Her show was on PBS and I loved it. She made food you would actually try to cook at home.

Ms. Hoffman's show does nothing. She tries to say the food she is cookiing is a snap to do but it is clear is has many, many steps, and lots of ingredients that require a lot of prep time. That is not a snap to cook so don't try and tell me how quick and easy it is when I see you sweating from fatigue.

I too love Rick Bayless's show. It comes on our local PBS at 4:00 pm. It used to come on at 11:00 or 11:30 am. He cooks food I would actually cook at home.

My biggest problem with Flay's food and Stephen Pyles food is the addition of too much sugar/honey in savory dishes. I know just a touch of sugar helps flavor savory foods but when the first flavor that you taste is sweet, then it is too much sugar or honey. Besides, we get too much sugar from other sources to add it to meat and/or most vegetables.

Well, I'm glad to see Jeffery leave the show. He had nothing.

Next to go.... Jennifer or Shane.

Seeing Lisa slip and fall in the previews makes me anxious to watch next week's show.

Aaron and Lisa are head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of cooking ability. Harmonica boy is the most comfortable in front of the camera, but I don't think he has the culinary skills to win. The judges want Nipa to do well so bad, but she comes up short more often than not. She honestly though mixing sugar and cayenne together was going to impress anyone? Ohhh, but it's all in the ratio. Right.
