Jasmine Peeples (# 13, 6-2 Grad. C) is third at 8.0 ppg. Ashanti Spencer (# 20, 5-9 Sr. G/F) ranks fourth in scoring with an average of 7.1 ppg. Wright (160-346; 46.2%) and Spencer (71-218; 32.6%) have combined to take just over 34% of FGs attempted by ASU this season. Peeples (92-176; 52.3%) has the highest FT% among players that have played in at least 10 games. Tatyana Calhoun (# 54, 6-3 Fr. C) has the second highest FG% at 49.2% (29-59). Miracle Mayo-how’s that for a name? (# 30, 6-1 Soph. PF) ranks third in FG% at 46.7% (21-45). The Hornets take 30% of their shots from BTA. Only Elisiah Jones (# 14, 5-6 Fr. G; 2-5; 40.0%), Ewert (25-68; 36.8%) and Wright (27-90; 30.0%) are making at least 30% from BTA. Kayla Tucker (# 21, 5-7 Jr. PG) has taken a team leading 117 treys, hitting 33 (28.2%). Ewert (72-79; 91.1%) is the top FT shooter for the squad.

The Hornets are a two headed rebounding duo in Peeples (8.5 rpg) and Wright (8.3 rpg) . Third on the team in rebounding is Ewert (3.9 rpg). No player has reached cracked triple digits in assists but four have at least 45 assists. These are Durriya Shields-Sampson (#23, 5-5 Grad. G) with 45, Kayla Stephens (# 22, 6-1 Soph. SF) with 55 assists, Ewert with 61 and Shamyiah Smith (# 11, 5-2 Soph. PG) who leads the team with 81 assists. Peeples is the main shot blocker for the Hornets with 77 blocks. Next up are Stephens with 16 and three others with 11 each. Wright is tops in steals with 41, closely followed by Smith with 35. Four others have between 19 and 26 steals each.

Only Wright has started all 30 games for Alabama State followed by Peeples’ 29 starts and Stephens’ 26. Jones (18 starts), Shields-Sampson (17 starts) and Smith (11 starts) are the only others with double digit starts. Six other players have between one and nine starts. Five players have seen action in all 30 games: Wright, Peeples, Stephens, Spencer and Smith. Seven others have gotten to play in at least 21 games. Wright leads the Hornets in minutes per game at 31.2 mpg. Peeples, Ewert, Stephens and Smith average between 25.7 and 20.6 mpg. Five average in the teens in mpg. The Hornets are winners of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) for two years in a row. Wright was named to the All-SWAC first team while Peeples was an All-SWAC second team honoree.

ASU’s Shields-Sampson in listed as Sampson in the stats pages but as Shields-Sampson on the roster.

Texas Longhorns
Horns have three players averaging double figures for the season: Brooke (11.8 ppg), Imani (11.5 ppg) and Ariel (10.0 ppg). Four players have broken through the 200 FG attempt line: Imani (143-279; 51.3%), Brooke (134-290; 46.2%), Empress (72-236; 30.5%) and LaShann (82-201; 40.8%). Hitting at least 50% of their FGs are Kelsey (94-175; 53.7%), Ariel (83-161; 51.6%) and Imani (51.3%). Brooke is the only Horn to have taken at least 100 3s (58-141) and also leads the team in 3pt FG% at 41.1%. Celina is second in 3pters taken at 30-84 (35.7%). Empress (17-67; 25.4%) and Ariel (14-47; 29.8%) have been the other main shooters from BTA. Imani has trekked to the FT line just over 3 times a game (82-105) and hit a very respectable 78.1%. Empress (58-76; 765.3%) and Brooke (51-70; 72.9%) are second and third in getting to the FT line. Ariel (50-60; 83.3%) and Brady (17-21; 81.0%) have the highest FT % on the team.

Imani is the leading rebounder at 8.9 rpg. Kelsey (4.7 rpg) and Brianna (4.3 rpg) provide support on the boards for the Horns. Celina (3.7 apg), Brooke (2.5 apg) and Empress (2.1 apg) give Texas three starters that excel in finding open teammates. Imani has a chance to snap the 100 block barrier in front of the home fans as she enters Saturday’s game with a team leading 96 blocks. Kelsey with 30 blocks is the only other Horn to reach double figures in blocks. Horns have two players that have reached at least 40 steals a game (Brooke with 41 and LaShann with 40) with two other on the verge of reaching that plateau as Brianna and Celina each has 37 steals.

Imani is the only player to have started all 32 games for Texas. Brooke and Celina have started 31 of 32 games. Empress has 30 starts. Five players have at least one start with Brianna’s 18 and Ariel’s 10 starts topping this group. Brooke at 30.7 mpg is the only player to average at least 30 mpg. Empress, Celina and Imani average 20 plus mpg. Ariel, Kelsey and Brianna average just over 19 mpg. LaShann and Brady average in the low to mid teen mpg. Jordan and Tasia are at just over nine mpg. Imani, Ariel, Empress, Celina and Brooke have started the last three games.

Imani and Brooke were named to the All Big 12 first team. Ariel was named to the second team while Empress and Celina received honorable mention. Imani was also the Big 12 co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Projected starters based on starting lineups from the last game:
Texas_______________ASU____________________BYU___________________Mizzou
Imani (6-7)________ Stephens (6-1)________Rydaich (5-10)________S. Cunningham (6-1)
Ariel (5-11)_______ Wright (5-10)__________Maeda (5-5)__________L. Cunningham (6-0)
Empress (5-9)_____ Peeples (6-2)________Moody (6-2)__________M. Stock (6-1)
Celina (5-8)_______ Jones(5-6)_____________Pulsipher (5-8)_______Porter (6-4)
Brooke (5-4)______ Sampson (5-5)________ Purcell (6-2)_________Frericks (6-1)

Texas will have a size advantage inside as only Mizzou has a player taller than 6-2 that plays significant minutes. Mizzou starters are all at least 6-0 tall. Lots of all conference players will be on the floor in these three games. Mizzou’s S. Cunningham may be the best freshman among the four teams. Peeples and Wright from Alabama State are going to test the defense of Texas inside and outside. X factor for Texas will be the play of LaShann who will be a matchup nightmare for the other teams with her quickness and ability to get to the basket.

Game one (BYU vs Mizzou) starts at 5:30 PM with the Texas vs ASU game scheduled to tipoff half an hour after the first game, estimated start time: 8:00 PM. Both games will be televised on ESPN2 (in Austin area, TWC 301). Radio is likely to be The Horn, 104.9 FM. Parking for the games will open at 3:30 PM. So far, haven’t heard what time the doors open. Hopefully earlier than an hour before game time to allow people to wander around the arena checking merchandise and food/drinks

No. Baylor lost to Louisville because Waltz outcoached Mulkey.

Our loss to UConn was because we couldn't rebound their missed free throws at critical times, or stop Taurasi from taking wide open 3-pointers when they needed them most.
I don't think you watched those two games very closely.... The refs let UL beat the crap out of Griner.... If we breathed on Taurasi they called a foul....Refs won those games.

Why did anyone on our coaching staff think Foman could play power five level basketball ? Nothing against the young lady...I'm sure she is a class kid, but she is just too small to play at this level. Can't defend or go to the hole due to her size, and doesn't have a killer jump shot.

She has always been great off the bench.

Not sure what Coach Aston was thinking putting in Foman, Aborowa, and Sanders on the floor at the same time so early in the game. Really allowed ASU to make some buckets and gain a huge amount of confidence. Also seemed to kill any flow our starters were trying to create.

Really good to see Empress find her offensive groove again. The last few games of the season made me wonder if she was not 100% healthy.

And all 13 active players score. And I don't know where that silly comment about Foman came from, she is a great defender and shooter, and has been tremendous for us off the bench. Overall great to see so many players contributing.

Agree about Foman. It's been quite awhile since I was nervous to have her on the court. She's so much more under control than earlier in the season, it appears the game finally slowed down for her.

Next up is Missouri, our old Big 12 opponent. Sophi Cunningham and Jordan Frericks were the top scorers with Morgan Stock giving them a nice scoring trio in the game vs BYU. They probably have the tallest starting five as none of the starters is under 6-0.

Imani will be busy as S. Cunningham and Frericks did a lot of work inside.

She needs to rest starters, plus, she wanted to give bench players some time on the "big stage", esp Mide, who has never played in NCAA's...KA knows what she is doing, this not her first rodeo...:rolleyes1:

While you're right about her wanting to give time to some players practicing well, she herself admits she messed up with the first quarter subbing. That was a dangerous thing she did because you don't allow a lower seed to hang around and start playing with confidence. I was just really glad to see how the team responded in the 3rd quarter. On to Mizzou.

And again, I subbed too quick, but I was trying to get a couple of people in there that I thought had really had good weeks of practice, and I probably messed our flow up a little bit.

when that young lady for alabama state popped out her shoulder and was heard yelling and screaming on the tv how come her coach didnt go check on her? sorry for ranting, but come on its her player. rant over

we should run some scheme that Ohio state runs for Mitchell for Ariel. I'm not saying she is that player but I think she can be really good with the ball in her hands a lot. She's so efficient

What kind of style does Missouri play? I saw Cunningham play a little in high school and she's a nice player. Also, I think Alecia's aau teammate Porter is a nice stretch 4/5 freshman on the team. Playing against a zone with that kind of height and length would be a challenge for Texas. Rebounding will also be important.

Sophie Cunningham and Jordan Frericks scored at will around the rim to fuel the 10th-seeded Tigers to a 78-69 first-round victory Saturday night over seventh-seeded BYU at the Frank Erwin Center....“We’re finally getting to the point as we build this program that we’ve got more size than we ever have,” said Pingeton, in her sixth season at MU, “which has allowed us to take advantage of some mismatches and some inside play.”

The Tigers are a good 3pt shooting team but they look to exploit matchups inside. Remember, all starters are at least 6-0 with their top two scorers at 6-1, Sophie Cunningham a guard and Jordan Frericks a forward. S. Cunningham can handle the ball well and was excellent inside. Sister Lindsey Cunningham, the PG, pushes the ball but they are a very good halfcourt team. They destroyed BYU inside. Don't know if they will try that against us or go to a more of a mid range-long ball game since it will be tougher to get inside.
