Miami Regional

Ziehl is starting against Maine.
:miami:

This is probably the "textbook" correct (and conservative) decision. Go with your top starter in Game 1 and stay out of the Losers bracket above all.

Rosario just isn't that good. I looked through some of their conference box scores. They'll ride Ziehl for 6-7 innings, like a normal traditional starter. The other starters aren't that good, so they quickly go to middle relievers early in the games that Ziehl doesn't pitch. Lequerica has good numbers, and some of their other middle relievers have decent numbers.

But remember, with Miami, their pitchers are just there to keep the opponents under 6-7 points. They bash their way to victory at the plate and score lots of runs. The U has a nasty batting lineup. But so was LSU's, and LBJ did well against them. We need to score that 6-7 points (or more). It's sort of a weird matchup.

:miami:

Real good pitchers can keep them in check, and sometimes shut them down.

Consider the following 3 game series:

Against Wake, in 3 games Miami scored: 0, 1, and 1 points

Against Virginia, in 3 games Miami scored: 2, 5, and 3 points.

:miami:

Their top starter, Ziehl, went 6 innings. I guess they really didn't want to chance moving to the losers' bracket.

On the mound, we'll probably see Lequerica (good, but doesn't go for many innings), Torres (mediocre at best), Ronaldo Gallo (not very good at all), and Walters (total stud/nation's top closer) will close for 2 innings? We need to rock guys like Torres and Ronaldo Gallo when they're on the mound. We could score a lot of runs tomorrow.

The more I look at these Miami pitchers, the more I like this matchup. They burned their only good true starter today (Ziehl). Middle reliever Lequerica is very competent, but he normally only goes for a couple or more innings. Walters, their closer, is a stud. But aside from a probable 4-5 innings combined from Lequerica and Walters, we're going to be facing some chopped liver on the mound tomorrow!

It may look something like this:

Ronaldo Gallo starts, 2 innings
Lequerica, 3 innings
Torres, 2 innings
Walters, 2 innings

We can probably hit Lequerica decently enough. He's not bad at all, but he's no Walters. We'll likely get a run off him, maybe more if they keep him out there for long. But we should absolutely rock guys like Torres and Ronaldo Gallo for 2-3+ runs each. We may have a big inning or two when those clowns are on the mound. Walters will be a real challenge to hit when he closes, so let's build up a lead before the 8th inning. The utter badassness of Walters and the general pitching competence of Lequerica are outweighed by the easy hitability of Ronaldo Gallo, Torres, and most of the other pitchers Miami will trot out to the mound. We won't see Ziehl tomorrow.

Their best move might actually be to start middle reliever Lequerica and ride him for as long as he can go. And pitch Walters for 3 innings in closing instead of 1-2.

Now this is a relief pitcher:

All-American, Andrew Walters.

"Walters has recorded a 9.7 [to 1] strikeout-to-walk ratio, punching out 68 hitters and issuing seven free passes. The Palm Bay, Fla., native has held opponents to a .168 batting average.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound hurler ranks among the nation’s active career leaders in ERA (1.36, first), K/9 (15.1, first) and saves (25, tied for second)."

Yeah, he's good.

Aggies have never experienced the Cal State Fullerton effect!

It’s a thing! Longhorns have been on the wrong side of those guys many times

The big question is, will LBJ be "on" tomorrow? If so, the game is ours. If not, we may have to score 8-9+ runs to win it. Miami's bats are nasty.

I recall you said the same about OU.

And I see a connection here. Down East Maine was part of Acadia. The Cajuns came from there.

Cajuns pouring it on, now up 19-5 in the bottom of the seventh. They’re going to be a handful for either us or Miami tomorrow

Weather delay. Watch if 3 games get played next Tuesday to finish the tournament.

It may not play out this way but Florida teams always put up big offensive numbers till they face real pitching. I’m not skeered.

Texas baseball made an error or there has been a rule change and we can play with two DH’s now but without a 3rd baseman. :idk:

Anyone have a clue if the game will be played tonight? Radar suggests it will get worse this evening.
