Miami Regional

Morehouse gets it done setting down ULL in order in the 9th. This is why David Pierce is the HC and I am not. Big win for the Horns to go up 1-0 in the regional.

Pierce’s gamble may well pay off with Gordon now available for work on Monday as needed. Now we need LBJ to continue his dominance of the last month plus and the bats still need to wake up. This regional is there for the taking but it ain’t going to be handed to the Horns.

We finished with 8 hits. A decent performance, most of it coming in the last 3-4 innings.

The pitching by Gordon was outstanding, and while Zane gave up 1 solo dinger in 2 innings, he otherwise got the job done.

For the next game, we need a roughly similar performance by LBJ and the pen, and we need spots 7-9 to step up some more (Daly was really good at bat today, obviously). We may go with Galvan, J. DuPlantier, or Belyeu at DH tomorrow...

Kennedy ROBBED them of 3 runs. (the difference in the game) Overall, the outfield was exceptional today.

That probably went as well as possible. The bats showed some life. We had some good swings.

I’d think we’ll see the same lineup again tomorrow. I’m curious on Pierces feelings on Flores. Maybe JD gets the call.

The wind seemed to really move the ball around a lot in the corners of this park's outfield.

Yeah!!!!!!!!! Double 2 RBI. He lined that thing to 3/4 of the way up the LCF wall. Power hitting.

4-1 us
I’m glad we didn’t need the 2 extra runs that DC just barely missed.

Is it supposed to be an easy win for the UM?
Vs. Maine, the U is probably a significant favorite. Now if they get cocky and save their top starter for us, and pitch their #2 vs. Maine, that could bite them.

Vs. us, If LBJ is on, we can hold them to 4 or fewer runs. We should score at least 3, and as many as 7-8. So, if LBJ is on, I like us over the U. If LBJ is not on, then we could be in some real trouble.

Not sure what the thinking was on pulling Gordon with 83 pitches.
Possibly with a Monday game and 2 days rest he would be available for couple innings and then with weather forecast this thing could get extended into Tuesday and possibly a start then. The other side of that is you have to win this game first.
We could be playing until next Wednesday

Zane threw well. A batter hit one fastball right in the sweet spot and it was gone. Giving up 1 run in 2 full innings equates to a 4.5 ERA. Zane gave up 2 hits and no walks in 2 full innings, which equates to a 1.00 WHIP (really good). Obviously, I don't like the homerun, but Zane M. got the job done. He'll be used some in game 2 or 3 (or 4...). Now when I saw a certain un-named pitcher warming up in the pen, I ran for the bottle of Tums.

You mean the guy with a better ERA than the ULaLa starter that shut us down for 6? The same guy with a better ERA than half the teams in the country? The one who pitched 3 shutout innings as a starter in the regional clinching game winner last year?

Statistically, Miami is a weird pitching team. Overall, they're a fairly average pitching team. Miami wins games at bat, not on the mound.

First their strength, a big strength, their closer: Andrew Walters.
Walters is one of the nation's top closers, and he plays most games.
1.08 ERA, 0.78 WHIP

Their normal starters are pretty pedestrian, not bad, but not great:

Ziehl: 4.61 ERA, 1.27 WHIP

Rosario: 7.45 ERA :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:, 1.68 WHIP

The 3rd "starter" is a grab bag, often either:

Torres: 4.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
-or-
Ronaldo Gallo 6.81 ERA :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:, 1.70 WHIP

Torres and Ronaldo Gallo can also be used in middle relief.

Then, they rely heavily on a couple of middle-relievers:

Chesnutt: 5.81 ERA, 1.68 WHIP

Lequerica: 3.92 ERA, 1.14 WHIP

So, basically, they've got one solid reliable starter, Ziehl, who will go deep into games. Aside from Ziehl, they're quick to put in multiple middle relievers in a game, and end it up with an outstanding closer--their strength.

Walters -- excellent
Lequerica -- good
Ziehl -- pretty good
Torres -- ok

Their team ERA is 5.12, which is over a full point higher than ours.

Miami wins their games at bat. Excellent closer though.

Miami's bats. Miami wins their games at bat. While their pitching is ok, their batting lineup is just a bit shy of LSU's. This will be like playing a slightly better version of Texas Tech or Oklahoma State. This team can hit--good batting averages and plenty of monster power hitters. 6 players with double digit homeruns. (and this is against a schedule full of ACC pitching--arguably the Nation's best pitching). They look like one of those old LSU or Arkansas teams that will just bash you out of the park and win their games home run derby style.

Team batting avg. 0.300

112 Homeruns on the year (and rising)

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Team OPS. 0.923
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

They have 5 guys with OPS over 1.000, and 2 more with OPS over 0.900.

And they've played against good competition.

To win, our bats need to be lively. LBJ may be able to hold them down somewhat, but Miami's lineup will put some points on the board. It's another Tech or OSU sort of game, but they're better than Tech or OSU.

Miami's pitchers have given up 80 homeruns, and opponents bat 0.258 against them.

As a comparison, our pitchers have only given up 34 homeruns, and opponents bat 0.242 against us.

Glad we pulled this off. I saw a few clips earlier, specifically DC diving catch and didnt think it was going to be our day. Hats off to the Horns!! Git r done!
