Mavs-NOH

Thank God for Jet! Go Mavs!

Hook'em!!!

Too bad it took this long to realize that Jet was the key to beating the Hornets. Biggest stat of the night - Stackhouse - 7 minutes. Seriously, what is wrong with him?

Bear,
I think you're one of the most knowledgeable NBA posters on this board, but just to get this straight.... you would rather have Erick Dampier on your team these past 4 years than Steve Nash, who won two MVPs during that span? And don't include Diop in this conversation. He was a crapshoot signing that turned out to be brilliant in hindsight.

I don't disagree that the Mavs needed to get better up front to beat the Spurs, but the Mavs are going to be paying Erick Dampier $13 million for the 2010/2011 season. That's an inexcusable contract for his production. His biggest contribution against the Spurs in 2006 was hacking Duncan. He didn't stop him. Duncan still averaged more than 30 a game, and he was playing on a bum ankle. The Mavs could've signed a dozen different guys who would've been just as effective. The reason you beat the Spurs that series had less to do with the Mavs great D on Duncan, and more to do with the Spurs being unable to match up with Nowitzki. They just couldn't stop the Mavs.

Even ignoring the really good teams they had with Harper, and Blackman from back in the day, I don't really buy the "they were the three best Mavs teams ever" line. In 2005, they got beat in the playoffs by the Suns, largely at the hand of Nash himself. I'll give you 2006, that was the best year in franchise history, even with the finals meltdown. But 2007? Despite the gaudy regular season record, you can't ignore the complete playoff collapse. How that season can be viewed as anything but an abject failure is beyond me.

I'll also say that the 2003 team with Nash that lost to the Spurs in the conference finals might have been the best out of the bunch. That team was 60-22. People forget that Nowitzki got hurt in Game 3 or 4, or otherwise it might have been a different story. I don't see how you can rate the 2006 or 2007 teams better than that one.

Well how lovely.... down 3-1 in the series. Now the Mavs will have their hands full with a do or die game in NO. Avery better pull out some serious majic for this one. Nothing fell tonight and NO looked pretty good.

Wow. The Mavs have a couple of big questions this off-season. What to do with Avery and what to do with Kidd?

If you keep Avery, you have to start looking for a new point guard, right? A 35 year old guard who averages 8 points and 7 assists has got to be replaced, right? Whereas, if Avery is fired, you let the new coach make the call on Kidd?

Well, that was pitiful. 16 FT attempts the whole game, 7 each by Dirk and Jet. Howard 3-16 and didn't get to the line. Stack 1-5 from the field. Kidd 3 points and 3 assists. Sheesh.

I'm expecting a gutless performance in game 5 to end this nightmare of a season.

Blow this team up in the offseason...

GO STARS!

Josh Howard must have bet on New Orleans to win this series.

All Dallas is doing is taking contested jump shots. Only two players on the team were attacking the rim, and one of them was Kidd, who isn't going to convert the bucket himself and might as well not dish it to a teammate when he drives either because whenever he does, the guy either airballs a 3 or misses a layup/dunk. Dirk is a good offensive rebounder, but he takes himself out of the rebounding picture when he shoots because on his jump shots he lands 5 feet farther away from the hoop than he started from.

In 2006 the Mavs beat SA partially because even with the good defenders the Spurs have, they couldn't consistently stop Dirk, Terry, and Howard from scoring because all 3 guys were consistently slashing to the hoop. Right now Dallas only has 1 scorer consistently slashing to the hoop, and it shows.
