Longhorns vs. Cajuns

Everybody who posted here seem to be on target. From experience, DKR had 10 check points to win every game. Some, owing to rules changes, aren’t relevant. One was no kick-off returns out past the 30. Coaching errors were commonly main topics. Off-sides, illegal procedure, blocked kicks, turn over ratio, mainly mental errors were to be avoided like plague. In this game, we had no failure to line-up, delay of game, too many players, that sort of BS. What I haven’t heard is enough kudos for not sleeping on the first on-side kick. That one was well timed and a great coaching call for ULaLa. Could have been a back-breaker for previous regimes (Mack included). This whole celebration could have been derailed if we’d sleep-walked through that. Damned fine discipline from players and/or coaches that warned about it. The product for all meaningful evaluations appears to be a Great TEAM effort. Beginning to end, and notably after the end!, seems to be a cohesive, focused, and well balanced group of young men. You can’t buy respect or demand it. It has to be earned and these guys are earning a healthily helping on day one. Hook ‘em baby!

I know this true of every team but we will learn from this game and sharpen up some things. Don't remember any injuries.
Still concerned about o-line play. I noticed some holding that was not called. But they gave up just 3 sacks. That's not bad.

Seems like with the skill level, nice play calling/designs and good lineman displayed by #23 ranked Louisiana, that this is a game Herman would have lost.

Not sure about "would have." "Could have" definitely. "Made it closer than it should have been?" Probably.

2. Our special teams coverage units were not an embarrassment.

When you only punt twice and kick every kickoff out of the end zone, that helps! :D

No EOT issue:

That's what happens when grown-ups start acting like grown-ups. "We're playing the song. Deal with it." Problem solved.

Here are my two biggest issues...
1 The OL did not establish the run for us. I thought Bijan did Bijan.

2 The defense played the outside too much early. We gave too much up the middle. We adjusted, but I didn't like that we started that way. I thought DL was a strength? Then coach like it

O-line was not good at all. Card and Bijan played well despite the line issues. They were not helped by the line.

Watched the game up here with @Run Pincher. Both very frustrated by the o-line play. Also a bit frustrating how much we gave up on passes in the flat and over the middle to a not passing prolific Big XII offense.

But, maybe first game jitters.

There are likely two high NFL draft picks on their DL. Not to white-wash some less than pleasing OL play, but they have players also.

Awesome first game of the new regime!

We’re a legit top 10 team. Look for us to slaughter the hogs.

Stars include: Bijan, J Whitt, Hudson, Overshown, Jones, Brockemeyer.

Needs work: pass protection.

I liked our 4 sacks and frequent QB hurries. Levy Lewis was mostly a non-factor.

Biggest difference between us now and the last 15 years or so—-> play calling and scheming on both sides of the ball. That and preparedness + adjustments. In case we’ve forgotten, this is how it’s supposed to be. This is what a good coaching staff does.

Hill was their star DL today. We didn’t handle him well at all. He was pressuring Hudson over and over again. We’ll face some similar players later this year. Big Humphrey looks like he may now be up to a size that’s a little too big for optimal effectiveness.

Lot's of praise to be passed around. Most of it previously mentioned.

I'm concerned with clean up needed this week prior to hawgs.

1. OL - I know it was first game & UL had some BEASTS, etc. but far too many whiffs, poor reads, holding calls, QB hurries and sacks.

2. Dicker was Exerleben like in his punts today but missed a FG he should have made... didnt matter in this game, might be huge vs.ou or ISU.

3. Dont like calling out Special Teams, as they were great overall. Recovered 2 onside kicks, tackled well, no big plays or fumbles... however the Horns ST gave up a HUGE Jamison punt return for TD due too poor blocking techniques.

Ok enough bitching!

Horns won baby!

I like what you say but we got better coaches this year.

Angilou looked hurt to me.

Why did he have to be set? One man can be in motion (at least sideways).
he was shuffling slightly forward and to the left as opposed to going laterally in motion. In which case you have to come set before the snap. It was close and as I noted would have been a bit nitpicky call. Just glad they let it go

Did Jamison ever come back into the game after getting shook up? Dunn did a good job in his stead but Jamison would be a big loss.

I think that should have been a penalty cause he was not set for one second. But glad it didn't happen.

OL is the worst. If this is the best 5 we have, heaven help us once injuries hit. Not sure how much coaching them up can be done. Hopefully Sark can devise plays and schemes that don't require lengthy 1 on 1 battles.

Guess that's what 7-8 + years of so so OL recruiting and line coaching get you. Sighs..

I want to believe this
Easy on the " top 10" talk. The piggie game is a trap game if there ever was one. I feel better about this game with Sark as coach than I did with mensa. However piggie is piggie and would love nothing more than to " welcome" us to the sec sec.

I think our 2nd team o-linemen are not far behind the first teamers. So i'm not too worried about first team injury here are there. But we all know that we have been largely striking out in o-line recruiting for the past decade. I think those top lineman will start to sign up with Sark here and soon. I expect to sign two more (at least) to sign this year.

Seems like we were playing man on their WRs but a loose man
I would like to see a tight man.
Or were we playing zone?
We can check them at the line right? Bump them off their route?
Or is that bad strategy?

Bump them off their route?

The last time we did that, Fred Akers was HC and Leon Fuller was DC.

On multiple occasions yesterday, we had CB on the right side lineup nose to nose, but we never touched the WR. Then back to fairly tight zone. Never appears we feared the long ball. Whatever it was, it worked.
