Ike Will Threaten Texas-Arkansas

I still don't see gametime conditions being the primary factor. It'll be windy & stormy, but we've played in those conditions before (like Iowa State in '06).

IMO, they'll make a decision based on the evacuation situation this weekend vs. hotel accommodations on 9/27 with ACL Festival. It's a logistical nightmare either way, but my guess is UT athletics & administrative officials will grit their teeth, pray for Ike to turn north or west and continue with the game as scheduled this Saturday.

I'm not by any stretch on the means a meterologist, but I have taken some classes at UT in the past and keep up with the weather almost daily. Hurricanes in this part of the country always veer to the northeast...always (the westerlies pick up around 30 degress North latitude and push them back to the east). The only reason the models had this storm staying so far south as they did/do is b/c of the strong upper level High pressure sitting over us right now. If this High buckles or isn't nearly as strong as the models think, this storm will head northeast i.e. Freeport, Galveston, High Island, even Sabine pass.

Another thing to note about Hurricanes is that the strongest part of them are the foward right quadrent. (most of the time the northwest side) So if and hopefully for Texas fans sake is that this thing will veer to the northeast and hit somewhere north of galveston bay and leave us on the "dry" side. There will still be some showers and be windy, but nothing to worry about, let alone cancelling a game!

Like someone said earlier, bring lots of beer and a poncho and we'll be in for the best game of the year in my opinion.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but if you look at the current NHC website and you view the satellite loops, you can click on the track of the storm. As of right now, it show Ike as a CAT 2 about 30 miles south of Austin. The Link

Again, these projections will change, but if they don't, you can expect at least CAT 1 strength storm almost directly over Austin Saturday afternoon.

keeps moving north. looks like land fall would be west of victoria... near the port o'connor area. houston will get a lot of rain... looks like Austin will spared from flooding as we will be on the west side of the storm.

I don't know how bad the hotels were in Austin but my family told me that when they evac'd from Rita that once they got off I-10 onto 71 the road was pretty clear sailing into Austin.

However...That being said...I agree with another poster that football should be the last thing on our mind as a hurricane hits Texas. If the hurricane hits Houston I think Austin, and UT, have a responsibility to cancel the game and help out in any way possible.

It sucks, but I believe it's only a matter of time until they announce the game is postponed. The hurricane track likely will bend north. This will help Austin, but H-town will be squarely in harm's way.

If it is safe for the players to play and fans to attend; the game should be played. PERIOD. Is AISD canceling games? Round Rock ISD? If people can't make it from Houston; we'll miss you. I doubt as many people would be calling for this to be rescheduled if the Hurricane was headed South to the Valley.

As far as evacuees, some of you make it sound as if Austin is the only place for people to go.

Ike's pressure at 9pm is 940mb. That's normally the pressure of a CAT 4 storm, which means that his winds will start going up rapidly. The only reason it's taking so long is because he's so large.

Wilma tracked across South Florida and to Cancun. Spun for a couple of days, and then reversed back and hit South Florida again.

THAT's an elbow....

Steel Shank has a full tank of gas, two cases of beer, ice chest, propane, multiple briskets, and will soon have a carton of cigarettes. Oh yeah, he'll also have a 870 Wingmaster and half a case of shells.

Everybody be safe.

I still think it's funny that Rex Kramer called a poster 'smart guy". I think that Dean Wormer used that line. I always thought it was funny.

Now, everybody stock up on beer like Steel Shank did and everybody settle the **** down. Let's focus on our brothers that may be in harm's way (read Bill In Sinton, as one example.) Jesus people.
