Horns v BYU Game Thread 2023

I hate to agree with you, but I will. Typically outstanding running backs show their skill set almost immediately when they play in college. That has been the case for almost every great Texas running back, with the odd exception of Bijan, who IMO took several games.

I’m still hopeful about Baxter, but I agree with you. We really haven’t seen the elusiveness, explosiveness and power that we had expected. Yet.
Baxter has been playing injured all season.
He's had a foot injury he's been dealing with until the last couple of games.
Looked much stronger, especially in the Houston game.
Give the kid some time to be healthy and I think he's going to be great.

Watched the game again.
  • Murphy wasn't doing a great job of presnap reads. Reminded me of Sam 2017 or Shane 2016. There's something to be said for swagger, but if that's pretty much all you're relying on when walking up to the LoS, you need to watch more film and figure out what will happen on that play based on lots of different factors.
  • Worthy was the big difference and we should appreciate that.
  • While I do like Mitchell, I think Whitt should be getting some of those slant looks.
  • Sanders still seems out of it.
  • The right side of the OL continued to be the culprit for botched assignments.
  • You could tell that the team was just waiting for the run game to take shape. Once it did, we knew the game was in hand and pretty much just toyed with BYU for most of the 2nd half. Would like to see that much earlier against KSU (like last year).
  • Taaffe is Dylan Haines reincarnated. He's outmanned by pretty much every ballcarrier that approaches him, but he does JUST enough to redeem with those picks.
  • The freshman corners are going to be great. They're not there yet.
  • Sweat is dominant but I thought the rest of the DT's didn't have a great game.
  • "Smartest guy in the room" continues to baffle with just terrible 4th-and-short calls. He's like a Transformer who can morph into Tom Herman on occasion. Byron Murphy in the backfield needs to be scrapped, much like when Mack realized that Henry Melton wasn't meant for that any longer.
I'm still predicting a loss to KSU based on what I've seen from them and the payback factor from last year. Their D is so much better than anything we've seen this year (including Bama), and they've been playing really, really well lately. They'll create mistakes and mismatches if Murphy showed zero improvement from last week to this one. The best way to get a W will be on whether or not we can establish the run.

I think you pretty much nailed it. The LV oddsmakers are predicting a one score game to entice betters. I would suspect the smart money is on KSU because the wise guys don't see Maalik taking care of the ball against a well prepared aggressive hot defense (allowing less than 16 points per game).

There will be great pressure on our linebackers to contain their young, very fast QB. His feet scare me more than his arm--although he's passed better and better as he gains experience and confidence in the pass game.

This game will be a huge test.

I agree with you about Baxter. However, I think Redd should get more carries until Baxter is able to demonstrate the speed and elusiveness we've been expecting.

I think Murphy played good on defense. But adding to QB Murphy lack of experience you have the B12 not wanting Texas or blowu in the B12CG it's going to be really tough for either to pull out a W.

It's going to take the best game of the season for every unit other than QB to pull out a W.

Spot on.
