Horns v BYU Game Thread 2023

With the expectations on this board it’s easy to lose sight of this. We have been down for so long we’ve lost sight of the forest for the trees. I for one am going to enjoy the ride and see where this season takes us.
This is the primary reason I don't often join the in-game threads. The negativity and bitching make the game far less enjoyable for me.

My takeaways:

1) we have lots of depth across the team
2) solid win
3) great defense
4) great special teams

Needs improvement:
1) red zone offense
2) Sark needs to play chess versus checkers. He had a chance to effectively put the game away with a field goal - twice.

Blue needs more touches than Baxter.

Agree, or better yet, give those carries to JBrooks. I don't get why people say Baxter is so great. Maybe he will be some day, but right now he is not impressing me at all.

If we could just fix the red zone offense, I think we could live with all the other issues. We left a lot of points on the field yesterday with 3 trips to the RZ and no points.

I love, love, love our kick coverage. Under the last two regimes, we couldn't stop a kick return inside the 35 if the game depended on it and often it did.

That’s right—great defense!

Myself included on that.
Just my observation on the RB’s is that Blue does run with more speed and makes plays, but no question JB is the beast we needed this year.
But let Blue get those early touches also.

“I just wish I could have given them more of a fight, in the scoreboard,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. "I felt like Texas showed their identity at the end, taking over, relying on the run game. When you see them on the field, it just pops out, the talent, the depth ... You can tell this thing is starting to really build.”

We are going to lose some talent next year but the depth will be outstanding.

I hate to agree with you, but I will. Typically outstanding running backs show their skill set almost immediately when they play in college. That has been the case for almost every great Texas running back, with the odd exception of Bijan, who IMO took several games.

I’m still hopeful about Baxter, but I agree with you. We really haven’t seen the elusiveness, explosiveness and power that we had expected. Yet.

1. Brooks
2. Baxter
3. Keilan Robinson
4, everyone else (not to discount Red in the Wildhorn)
I think Blue is KRob with a little bit better RB instincts. If he sticks around he’ll perform the same offensive duties at a higher level.

By the 4th qtr, JBrooks was averaging around 7.5 ypc on Saturday, Baxter was about 3.5, maybe a little under. Why are we taking carries away from JBrooks? Dammit, Sark, my boy don't come over to your house and knock the bread outta your mouth. Feed your horse!

I do know Brooks was slightly dinged on a play and i did see him tap the helmet another time to get subbed out.

Brooks needs to stay healthy to continue this pace. The more tired he gets the more susceptible to injury. Also need to keep the other backs engaged - in case Brooks does get injured and to discourage them from portaling. We are 7-1, ranked 6 or 7, won convincingly with a first-time QB and Brooks is currently healthy. I think we're doing pretty well.

Ok. It moved.
