Horns face off with OSU in Stillwater

Probably won't beat them, but should give Baylor a battle this year. their length at guard and deep athletic post play will give them the edge, but should show we are gaining a little ground on them. I figure maybe a second place finish and #2 seed in NCAAs this year if we keep getting better. Women's basketball team is fun to watch unlike football and men's basketball.
If we could cut our turnovers in half, we could beat Baylor...no doubt about that.....but having more than 9-12 TO's will doom us against great teams.
Given our style of play and the massive numbers of players seeing action, I expect TO's......but we should never have over 15 per game. Today, i think we had 22. Cut that in half, ladies, please!
Nice to see a win in Stillwater, however. I've made too many trips home from there in a bad mood.

What length at guard are you referring to? They have Niya, Alexis and Kristy as far as I've seen. Prince played for them today for the first time since November, and she's the tallest guard they have. Just curious.

Well, I'm curious if we can get Mulkey to wear those chocolate brown leather slacks when they come to Austin to play that televised game in a couple of weeks.

Great game, everybody that could play did play..wish Mide would have made her shot, then everyone would have scored! The reffing was kinda on & off, some fouls called on the ball blocks were anticipated well before they even happened. (or didn't happen, as in several cases)..

Car43 and 56 Bells, I think we have a strong chance to beat Baylor. We're better than last year-- more confidence, shooting better, more personnel, and our movement on offense looks so much better. They are daunting in many ways, especially their interior size, but we're pretty daunting, too. They are having uncharacteristic turnover problems this year, according to Kim Mulkey and a Waco TV report I saw.

I must take back my statement about the guards...I hadn't looked at the rosters, and just watching on TV their guards looked much taller and long-armed than ours...They are compared to McCarty and Foman, but maybe not the rest.....They do seem to have an edge inside with numbers of big athletic bodies, where we only have a couple of really good ones. I think we can play with them this year, and that is better than previous years. We could actually split with them this season.

Sure, we can beat Baylor, especially if we shoot 53% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc, which is what we did against Ok.St. We were hot...but often we're not. To be fair though, the offense is much improved and is still improving. The psychology of different coaches is interesting. I'll have to go back and check, but I think Aston talked in the post game interview was about great the defense was. It was great, but the reason we're 4-0 in the Big 12 is that we're scoring more. We averaged 59 points in our first four games last year and we were 2-2. This season we're scoring 76 points a game and we're 4-0. Personally, I think Baylor is still the favorite, but we can beat them if our offense is strong. Last night was the first time Texas really looked like they might be one of the four best teams in the country. People were hitting jump shots and half our baskets weren't layups or put ins under the basket.

I don’t see any reason to think that we will be lucky to give Baylor a game much less win. Imo, we got a great chance to sweep Baylor. If anything, they come into this game recovering from injury, with freshmen getting the majority of minutes in the post instead of their vets while we have put together a nice blend of vets and newcomers and everyone is fairly healthy.

Baylor has three guards they play: Jones, Wallace and Johnson. Aside from Prince, who played in her first game Sat since having surgery to repair a torn meniscus, the other guards rarely get in the game. So, basically four guards will be available for the game. Ariel, Brooke, Celina, Empress, Brianna and Brady will likely be rotating against them. Tasia and LaShann will also be available and have gotten experience where the BU backups have not.

In the post, frosh Mompremier has proved a very pleasant surprise for BU who expected fellow frosh 6-7 Brown to be the main player. Mompremier has overtaken Brown as the starting post. Higgins, Cave and, of course, Davis, are the other posts although Davis has played the three quite a bit this season. Cave has played well but relieves the freshmen. I will take Imani, Kelsey, Sara, Jordan and Olamide on this one.

Three keys for Baylor, will Davis play primarily inside where we have had oodles of trouble matching up with her and how effective will Prince be in her second game back? Which Jones will show up—she has been inconsistent as she works into fitting in with the rest of the Baylor players on the floor.

For Texas: can we continue to shoot the 3 as well as we have? Will Ariel and Jordan continue their outstanding play? And will LaShann get untracked? If so, she is an x factor that will heavily favor Texas.

The best thing Texas can do is get Johnson, their point guard, in foul trouble. Their offense is sluggish without her. She's a great distributor and very good scorer when they need it. I watched their loss to Oklahoma State, in which she didn't play. That was the decisive factor. Baylor doesn't have a good backup point guard. I agree on Monpremier. Baylor now has a lot of big bodies, good ones, but not that great offensively. The Oklahoma State center outplayed them. They will, however provide better defense against our bigs; and they have the potential to make our guards' drives and inside game, less effective. That makes outside shooting more important.

I expect our games against Baylor to VERY competitive. I can't wait to watch. But, let's not overlook KU. Certainly don't want this to be a trap game, looking forward to BU.

Congrats to the players and coaches for going up to Stillwater and taking care of business. Another strong start, but this time they didn't go through any significant lulls.

Can't remember the last time a Texas team went on the road against one of the better teams in the Big 12 and won that decisively.

That's quite true. This is where the ability of our guards and posts to hit that mid range jumper is very important. They have to be able to continue to be able to pull up on penetration and hit that jumper and our posts need to continue to hit that 10-15 foot jumper to draw their posts away from the basket. So far this season, our players have done that. Not just one or two players but different players in different games or even in the same game. I am going to be very surprised if that goes away against Baylor.

You must have missed the Iowa State game.

I might be remembering this wrong but last year in Waco we lost Nekka and never recovered that game. However, I am pretty sure we gave them one hell of a game in Austin... Am I wrong?

I can't remember. But I do remember Kim's god awful Alice in Wonderland shoes. Just look at my screen photo of you don't remember them.
:fiestanana:

Yep. Just went and looked it up. 68-70. Without Nekka. We are a much better team this year so the question becomes... Are they?

This is a different Texas team, the are experienced and hungry to leave a legacy! At this point, it is one game at a time! Kansas on Wednesday and then we can talk about Baylor. This team is getting better each outing and I think each player now understands their role on the team.

I have at times been critical of Empress but I must say that she played yet another solid game. She played under control and went to things she does well (play defense, drive to the basket and take mid range shots). I hope she continues to play within her parameters.

Imani is playing some of her best ball and Kelsey is turning the corner again. I like what Hosey and Bri are bringing to the team (defense and hustle). Celina, Brooke, Ariel and Brady will provide the outside shooting. Arial and Empress will provide the mid range game.

Whether Texas wins the first match up with Baylor or not, it will be a great measuring stick to see how much they have improved. I personally think Texas will win the Baylor series (2 conference and 1 conference championship). The real test will be can Coach Aston remain calm and composed during the Baylor game. It is such a personal game, that whichever coach can keep their focus on the game will probably win the game. This is not the game to get emotional and starting subbing because of a mistake. All the ladies will pumped for the game, so expect a few early mistakes.

This team needs to be focused and have all their attention on playing on the road against Kansas. But with that being said, i don't understand how anyone could pick Texas to beat baylor until they actually do it. Texas hasn't beaten baylor in 7 or 8 years. baylor has won at least a share of the conference for 5 straight years. The bottom line is, the conference championship goes through baylor until proven otherwise.

and you can't go into the game thinking "we haven't beaten them in however many years" or you have lost before you take the court. And I will pick the Horns to beat Baylor because I believe we can do it.

Notice that i said anyone who picks Texas, meaning the fans. And it's great that you believe that they can win. But like i said, i won't believe that they can beat baylor until they actually do it. I'm pretty sure that you believed that they could win for the last 7 or 8 years, and how has that turned out.

8 years ago we split the series and then came back from a 22 point deficit at half in the B12 Tourney to beat Baylor. (Check my 22 but I think it was that or something close to that. Biggest deficit turnaround in B12 tourney history)

7 years ago we split the series with them.

6 years ago we swept the series.

Granted after that the wheels came off our train but we've been steadily climbing back and last year came up one bucket short of splitting the series again while our best player sat on the bench.

Damn right I believe.

Thanks once again for making the point that i made. The fact is, this has been a one sided a•• kicking and not the a rivalry that some have tried to make it. You can continue to believe, and i'll believe when i see it.

I'm sorry. I believe you said we haven't beaten Baylor in 7 or 8 years. In fact, you are incorrect. We've beaten them 5 times. That was the point. If you want to go back only 5 years then your case becomes solid. Of course, I could arbitrarily pick 20 years and suggest Baylor has the uphill climb.

My point now, is if you go back less than a year ago we took them to the final few seconds and missed by a basket. So it's not hard at all for me to believe we can beat them this year.

Rivalries have history. I would suggest that we haven't given a s**t about the Bears long enough to constitute (to use your term) a rivalry but that was never the point. We took care of Aggy for years and then hit a dry spell only to have beaten them in our last two match-ups. Who is to say the recent dry spell with Baylor won't end this year?

So, no matter how you slice and dice the situation, we have beaten and can beat Baylor and it is not a huge leap at all to think that we might beat them one, two and possibly three times this year. But, if you don't believe me, go ask an OSU fan.

Once again, you and anyone else can believe as much as you want. And i'll believe when they actually beat baylor.

Hogwash! Have you seen Baylor play this year? They've illustrated my point thus far about how their abysmal preseason schedule will hinder them in conference play. Many of their games have been closer than the final score indicates, and closer than they should have been based on their talent ridden roster.

Texas on the other had has begun to exceed expectations. Not to say that they weren't high coming into the season, but they certainly weren't final 4 contenders in the preseason. I think we have as good a shot to beat them this year as we will ever have. For the foreseeable future, the B12 will be a two dog race on the women's side between UT and BU and if you think we'll never best them, then you're just crazy.
