Help! I need some advice***UPDATED

thanks for your replies. I guess it is too late to change living quarters. So we will just see how it goes after fall semester.

My son said he was staying in a suite at Dobie, and it wasn't dorm size. Didn't know there was a difference, but I may be broke soon.

As far as missing a few classes, it really depends on the class itself. I've had classes where I had a solid A and went no more than 5 times all semester, and I've had classes where I went every time to scrape by with a B. Just have your son talk to the prof well in advance and see what his options are. Chances are if the trip doesn't interfere with a test day, he could just grab notes from a friend and be fine. In any case, congratulations on your son being accepted, hes gonna have a great time.

let the profs know - go on the trip

Your neighbor is mistaken. Dobie is neither a haven for the rich or the jewish. Dobie has fallen off over the years. Castillian would have been better but he'll do just fine at dobie. he'll live next door to hrc.

congrats to you and a big welcome to your son.

I remember everyone saying Dobie was majority Jewish, and the elevators are slow.

I went to summer school, it was a lot of fun. Living in coed Kinsolving was fun, and the classes were easy, and there was a lot of fun to be had, and met a lot of people.

summer sessions at UT are typically a 5 day a week thing for 5-6 weeks that cover in 5 days what is covered in about 3-4 weeks of Fall/Spring semesters. Lots and lots of reading typically. It might have changed but I'm writing this because you mentioned him missing only a couple classes.

Maybe get the book list for the classes somehow. That would be the only possible way I would let him go and miss that much time of a summer session. Also assuming he is a voracious reader too. Study the books and take notes on them while being sure the classes he takes have the notes available from the note taking services. There will probably be a 1/3 of his grade test in the second week too.

i loved summer school because it was challenging and no breaks so you got it done. But it was also a much bigger, much more challenging, deal once you were taking non-freshmen courses too.

Dobie will be fine. Dobie also leases for the summer sessions too I think. One thing, the summer sessions at UT are only about 15-30% of teh population that is going to be there in the fall. i kicked *** the second session of summer school before my freshman year and then blew off the following fall semester thinking UT was cake.

Another thing, he needs to know how to write, write clearly, write quickly for those courses you mentioned. The tests will likely be all essay and timed with more essays to write than the time allows. If he is not up to snuff on getting his thoughts/analysis down on bluebook, fast, he could get C's very easily.

Couple random comments:

1) As soon as possible, get out of the way and let your son figure out the UT bureaucracy. Make him responsible to understand that if he isn't on top of stuff he can and will lose out. It will prepare for the real world like no other - I can see the difference in kids straight from UT versus straight from elite private schools when they start work. The big public school kid almost always needs less hand holding.

2) I don't see why anyone cares what religious / ethnic background is alleged to be predominant at a particular dorm? I lived at Castillian freshman year and there were a lot of Jews, Baptists, agnostics and atheists there. It was cool. There was also a large contingent of heavy drinkers who specialized in promiscuity who I fell in with nicely.

Dobie = Asian
Towers = Jewish

At least that's the stereotype, but c'mon. Both are great places for a freshman. I lived at Towers in my day and my brother lived at Dobie in his. Both of us had great freshman years. He'll have fun and meet good people at either place. And just about any dorm for that matter.

PS - Jewish dorm does not mean "cheap". Probably the opposite. I thought it was pretty darn nice at the Towers.

I think I read that you checked about the courses, but just to be sure you can check online here to see if all of your son's courses transferred to UT and how they transferred through: www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/ (use the navigation bar on the left side)

Also, Freshmen register for their fall courses during the summer once all the other orientation sessions start so if he is going to try and go on that vacation make sure it's not when he's registering for fall classes. That's something he would not want to miss because I'm sure just about everyone here can tell you of some fun times they've had with registration.

what kind of school does your son currently attend where the principal doesn't mind making remarks about where Jewish people live at UT?
