Re the sliding issue: The problem now is that refs call a penalty most anytime a QB goes into a slide and gets hit with any amount of force. That should not be. Rather, there must be some judgment applied about whether (i) the defender started his tackle before or at the same time that the QB is sliding or (ii) the defender nevertheless lowered his head (ie, speared) or hit the head & neck area of the QB. Right now, the tie and several steps before that goes to the QB. That in my view is the issue.

I’m a fan of trying to get rid of blows to the head. But it’s not correct to consider a QB a defenseless player a microsecond from when he was running past the line of scrimmage with a full head of steam, when lots of QBs are 230 pounds.

And you simply can't expect a defender to know exactly when a guy is or isn't going to slide. If you think he'll probably slide, the only way to be sure of avoiding a penalty is to let up beforehand and hope you're right.
