The possible news of this hit early, early, this morning and was confirmed this afternoon with a press conference late afternoon.

From memory:
He arrived by flight from Africa 9/20.
Went to the hospital on 9-24 with first symptoms of something was treated and sent home
came back to the same hospital, Dallas Presby, on 9-28 and was quarantined
CDC and local testing confirmed it today
Health policies for privacy are in full effect
Health policies for tracing who he came into contact are in process
CDC says they got this

What do you think? I'd like to suspend some of the privacy with respect to public safety. I'm sensitive to the privacy concerns but feel they are going to far. The highest priority should be containment with potentially going too far to keep that the priority at the expense of some of the privacy.

Saw the press conference and I think the CDC and the media are all over it. The CDC said the man could not have been in a contagious state when on the plane and in the airport. Looks like all potential folks are under watch. I feel reassured this will cause no outbreak here.

They should publish a detailed timeline on where this guy was from the time he left the hospital till the time he came back to the hospital and was quarantined.

I agree the guy seemed very confident but also when answering questions from the press was much more concerned about the privacy for the one individual than the society as a whole. This policy needs to be reviewed, at minimum.(in my opinion)

The scientific bone in me is not highly concerned, given what I've heard about the current procedures put in place to cover any bases possible

However, the skeptic in me lives roughly 3/4 mile from the hospital. The same hospital that my wife is scheduled to deliver our next baby in a few short weeks. The skeptic in me also has little faith in any federal or local government agencies that time and again prove their ineptitude in handling delicate matters.

For now, I'm holding my breath and hoping for a quick and positive resolution to this very real and very dangerous news

While our hospitals are equipped to handle small outbreaks, they are not prepared for a large scale outbreak requiring isolation.

I have much confidence in the CDC, but no confidence in the political over-sight. Also, the fact that we are allowing travel from known outbreak countries is just plain stupid.

Some bureaucrat from the CDC acts confidently on TV and everybody goes, "whew, that was a close one".

Doesn't the fact that whoever saw him the first time he sought medical help gave him antibiotics and sent him out to infect more people worry you? I mean the man had just returned days ago from West Africa! Shouldn't alarm bells have gone off?

The CDC refuses to even say what flight he was on because they theorize that he wasn't contagious yet. And by the way, don't you think banning travel to parts of W. Africa would be a good idea? Yeah, I think the bureaucrats will handle this even better than they did the Obamacare rollout.

I'm a bit more, edit, much more concerned this morning than when I made my first post.

The media is reminding us all that Ebola only spreads in countries with filthy, archaic health procedures, so the US will be able to take the proper measures to cut it off at the pass.

However, driving to work just now, it's about to be widely reported that a second potential case is being acknowledged now, and will begin the quarantine process like the first case.

Yep, I agree that ALL travel from African nations should be banned, be it missionary workers returning, medical teams, tourists, etc. This PC angle has to stop. People should well know that they are going to a region on the globe that has a greater chance of exposure and transmission once returning from the area.

IF this second case tests positive, be ready to hear of at least a few more cases in the following days. So, when do you actually go into SHTF mode? 1 patient? 3? 5? 13? 89?

Dallas Health Director said that the first patient had direct contact with at least a few and possibly numerous children in the DISD school system.

If a stomach bug can spread like wildfire through an elementary school, imagine what could happen if any of those children were exposed and infected.

Call me over reactive, over cautious, or over stupid - whatever, but if it were me Dalhorn I would not be taking my wife to that hospital.
Don't like hospitals to begin with but one known to have, or be, treating an Ebola case? No thanks.

Nashorn, no, I don't think you're being over-cautious or what not. While we're still scheduled for a mid-November delivery date, I've already made a call to the other local hospital to inquire about procedure of switching hospitals and the billing that comes with it.

Newest update confirms that 5 children attending 4 local schools (2 elementary, 1 JR High and 1 HS) were in contact with the patient days before and up to the day he began experiencing symptoms. Plus the EMS responders that took him to the hospital and those at the hospital that encountered him on either of two visits he made, and you've got numbers escalating fast enough to start causing concern for immediate containment.

If you're nonchalant about this, that's fine. I typically don't consider myself a doomsdayer/prepper, but I'm guessing most of the people thinking my actions/fears are crazy don't routinely go to that hospital and don't live near where the patient was located, shop where they would shop, etc.

So the hospitals might have capability to isolate patients, but only if they follow common sense. The person infected stated he just returned from Liberia and they sent him home with antibiotics. He was diagnosed with a virus, but they prescribed antibiotics which are useless on a virus.

This is a very dangerous situation in my opinion.

Texas007 with the headshot. Lookout...

Until a second case is confirmed in relation to the first, I'm going to remain confident in the CDC's telling us that there's nothing to worry about.

However, if any of these 12 or so potentially exposed persons test positive, it's a potential game changer. Epidemics expand quickly and exponentially. If they can't get it under control quickly, they're going to be forced to either resort to drastic measures, or retreat and hope that it stops spreading by chance.

The ' experts" keep saying it can only be transmitted through fluids
but the FTW doc and the nurse say they did not come in contact with the fluids from anyone infected

No expert, and this is a scary disease, but it sounds like it is transmitted very much like HIV. Shared bodily fluids, needles, ...isn't this correct? I know it can't be caught through airborne transmission, or so I've read.

Ebola is much easier to contract than AIDS. Basically there needs to be blood to blood or blood to other bodily fluid contact with AIDS, something that generally requires some intimacy though it can be passed by sharing a toothbrush or a razor. Ebola can be transmitted by lots of different bodily fluids and in minute amounts. Touching your mouth after a handshake that has a few molecules of mucus, vomit, saliva, fecal matter can be enough to infect exposed people. Hugs, handshakes or getting hit with a little fluid after a sneeze are dangerous in an Ebola outbreak.

Accuarate
that is what they are saing but the FtW Doc who got it and the Nurse both said they never had any contact with infected people and they said they wore their protective gear at all times/
I don't think even if a few cases crop up here is USA that we will have anything close to an epidemic
and I think they are working on thousands of doses of some sort of vaccine.

This bulleting from Dallas ISD was sent I know in an abundance of caution but I think it will be viewed in fear by many parents
From DISD

Dallas ISD to monitor Ebola situation closely

Good afternoon,

The following message will be communicated to district staff and parents through a number of communication platforms today. We will keep you updated as conditions warrant.

Thanks.

Important Information Regarding Ebola

In an effort to keep you informed, the district has been made aware by Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) that five of our students who attend four different campuses may have had contact with the individual recently diagnosed with Ebola in Dallas County. The students attend the following campuses: Dan D. Rogers Elementary School, Emmett J. Conrad High School, L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School, and Sam Tasby Middle School. While no student from Lowe Elementary School has been identified, as an extra pre-caution the district is monitoring Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary since it is connected to Tasby Middle School.

As a precautionary measure, the students who were exposed to this individual have been advised to stay home from school. It is important to know that individuals are not contagious until symptoms appear. Since these students have not presented any symptoms, there is nothing to suggest that the disease was spread by any of these students to others, including to students and staff.

The district is working in conjunction with DCHHS and will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. In addition, the district is taking the following actions:
• Additional nurses are being deployed to each of the five campuses for precautionary purposes, to keep a close watch on any student who comes to the nurse’s office with fever or flu-like symptoms, etc.
• Additional custodial services have been arranged to thoroughly clean and disinfect each of the five buildings every evening, also a precautionary measure.
• A recorded hotline is being established to provide any updates on this situation. The number for this hotline is 972.925.5810.
• The district is also notifying parents through letters, which will be available on the district’s website along with frequently asked questions at the following location: The Link

How can you help? The most important thing is to remain calm and to reiterate the fact to your students that individuals are not contagious until symptoms appear. Again, the five students who have been identified have not displayed any systems. Additionally, many of your students and their parents may have questions. Please direct them to the Health Updates webpage located on the district website and to the Centers for Disease Control.

As more updates become available, we will notify you.

I heard on the radio that the CDC is now monitoring 18 people who were exposed to patient zero, including 5 children. The 5 children go to elementary, middle, and high schools.

Just one case exposed 18 people that they know about, probably others they don't know about. People in grocery stores or gas stations. You can see how this thing could get out of control in no time.

Number of "contacts" zooms from 18 to 80.

If I had "contact" with him, I'd be worried, don't know about you. "Four or five" of the first 18 are under "control orders" to stay at home.

Seriously considering not going to the Texas OU game..........

over 100,000 people at the State Fair that day greatly increases ones chances for contact........

If he survives, they're going to arrest his *** for lying on his health form. Liberia is going to arrest him if he lives Very selfish action on his part but not surprising that someone would do this. What's going to keep someone else from doing the same thing? What about a terrorist? Instead of strapping a bomb on your back, why not just go get Ebola, lie about your history and then go infect half the world? Not to give them any ideas.....

Was he lying? Unfortunately, the woman he and the others were helping was pregnant so it looks like they may have mistaken her condition for something related to that.

In reply to:

So Dallas County has taken control or seems like they are in charge.....this is going to end up bad........Dallas Country is so inept....

this may or may not turn for the worse. But you are right- Dallas is overrun by some of the absolute dumbest "leadership" you can possibly ask for.
