If the Eyes of Texas was once racist, then liken it to how Christmas Day was once a pagan celebration. The pagan celebration is a footnote in history solely known by those who wish to dig that far back. In the same vein, The Eyes are solely about Texas Longhorn pride. It has displaced it's historical problems. Those problems have been deleted and the current feeling surrounding the song is 100% about the University and the bond the everyone who took a class there feels.

Good analogy, but I don't believe The Eyes was ever racist, it was just sung by some folks in blackface once in the 30's.

To put that in context, a bunch of folks in Hollywood and on SNL have been in blackface within the last 20 years or less like Ted Danson, Jimmy Kimmel and a ton of others. Woke political leaders like the PM of Canada and the governor of Virginia had no problem in dressing up for parties in blackface in their 20's.

As for Herman, at this point, he still needs to go whether or not we have a replacement or not. The damage had been done. I'm sure one of the assistants can do just as lousy of a job as he has.

p_town,

There was a solid plan in place to replace Mack and get a new AD at he same time. Little Billie Powers ****** that up with great assistance from Mack Brown. The deal died on a Saturday morning when Powers turned what was to be a lengthy meeting into a five minute cluster with Powers left holding his while the main man left the room for Tarrant County.

Ultimately.....
In the context of losing out on Urban Meyer I vote to retain him as we've done with Shaka and hope he grows with the job. It's too much money to buy him out.

Now, I TOTALLY get that recruiting is a mess. And I know that the Orangeblood alumni is insulted by the Eye's debacle. I don't have an emotional feeling about that, but I do get the angst of long-time alumni who love that song. It's not racist at all; it's Texas.

Herman needs to get that.

If he can commit to personal growth as a coach, a leader of young men and a true representative of this University then maybe we can weather this storm.

Otherwise, I'd like to hear what Plan B is because I haven't heard anything that justifies a $24 million buy-out and ANOTHER 3-year honeymoon while we wait for the Plan B coach to recruit, "His players."

We are stuck with TH until we can get THE RIGHT Coach. Things suck now but with the wrong replacement things can get worse. The next coach has to be a slam dunk.

I agree with this approach. Another season of Herman may be mediocre and lose us some recruits. However PLEASE REMEMBER CHARLIE STRONG!!!! Things can be worse here and it wasn't very long ago that they were.

When Mack was put on the shelf we all thought Texas had a super secret plan to land someone amazing (some thought Saban :rolleyes1:). Turns out there was no real plan, our first several options turned us down, we were nationally embarrassed, and we ended up with Strong. Do you remember the Charlie Strong years. I do. I remember watching Arkansas whip the dog **** out of us in a bowl game. I don't seem to remember any other bowl games during the Charlie era.

If there is a great coach out there and we have agreed to terms with him ... buh bye to Herman. If not, wait for one.
These^^^^^^ three posts seem most reasonable to me...in spite of all the other aspects/emotions/concerns/realities.

We've made our bed....no sense sleeping on the cold, hard floor if there isn't another great bed option available....but make no mistake...this program... and the University...is in trouble

The Univ of Texas has not dealt with the Eyes issue. It may be resolved in the coming year but it is a bigger problem to the 50K+ students than it is to the football segment.
Until the blue ribbon committee finishes the process it will be an issue that will impact the Athletic Dept
The Admin has chosen to take the longer view and broader view it seems.
I have no idea what they will decide is the correct path in the coming year. Perhaps they can sell the song rights to TX Exes or LHF and continue tradition as a fan request postgame.
Have the players present for the Eyes on the field and they can participate in place.
Look for the right replacement for TH going forward and you have a year to get the job done. You only get one chance to change HC done right and as of today TX is 0-1.

Tomorrow is a new day.

I peaked into the blue ribbon committee meeting.

Have you ever posted the whole story? Because if you've have I'd like to read it and if you haven't I'd like you to post it!

"The Eyes of Texas" issue is settled. The committee is nothing more than token appeasement. Cancel "The Eyes" will ultimately result in billions (plural) in financial losses both academically and athletically to appease a few while thousands walk away.

No, I have never posted the entire story and won't without the permission of one of people that was there and several who were involved in the "business side", and assurance that I won't be sued. I would NEVER reveal those on the "business side", but neither was I afraid of Powers suing me because I had enough dirt on him to not worry.

I don't think Bill started out to play us, and neither did he understand he was about to create a seam to fulfill his "legacy", which I don't think he planned or plotted. He truly thought what he did was a minor deal and it was HUGE.

To quote the great Kern Tipps, Bill tried to "make blueberry muffins out of mud pies", and it turned out the muffins were crappy and the market hated blueberries. It cost him his job.

I assure you there is no paper trail.

I don't blame you for keeping most of that under your hat. Maybe Powers revealed what most of these elitist educators think; football is a minor deal at best.

Bystander,

If you live in Austin, there is a very scary story about The University, terrorists infiltration, and how it was stopped, none of which the University administration was ever aware of because DC didn't trust anyone in Austin, including local law enforcement offices.

My son was in school at the time. I told him no matter where he was, answer his phone, and if I said "GO", he was to get as far away as possible immediately. People on staff at the school, and they didn't even know it.

I did get private time with The Guttenberg Bible - gave me cold chills to be there.

It's a painfully simple answer (with extra stress on the word pain). If there isn't a game-changing coach available, keep what you have. Then see where the situation stands in a year.

This is from Ketch and is about recruiting but it seems like it might have some bearing on the original question

With National Signing Day around the corner, it appears an effort is being made to keep this recruiting class together and add another playmaker. Chris Del Conte recently picked up the phone to give LJ Johnson reassurances about the program. To our knowledge, Johnson is the only recruit who has asked to speak with Del Conte.

You follow recruiting? We keep Tom Herman another year and the talent on this team will be the worst it has been since 1988.

And, there isn't a slam dunk in college football not named Dabo, Urban, Nick... Appears we struck out on the only one available...

So what happened to Herman only giving out 1 year contract to asst coaches? Couldn't find anyone to come last year without a 2 year commit?

Looks like TH will be around for another season.

My take is this: Herman fired both his coordinators. That tells me right there a problem exists. He hand-picked these coaches and now his judgment was in question as he was hitting the reset button. The buzz surrounding his hire was gone. He was on the hot seat going into this season. Urban Meyer talk was going on last year. If I was a name coordinator and had a good job I would not have taken a one-year deal.

Kern Tipps!! How many Saturdays did I spend on the transistor radio listening to Kern Tipps and the Longhorns. If memory serves me, we could go to the local Humble filling station and get the SWC schedule for the upcoming season.

Plus, we can still be gutted by further transfers. When it looked like we had Meyer, I thought the transfer window was great since it would have given him a chance to add a bunch of talent after missing the early signing date. But now it looks like the complete opposite. The picture is now bleak. We are a steaming, heavy barge of hot garbage headed down the Mississippi River with a lot of momentum. It's going to take an extremely dynamic new hire to stop the barge's momentum and turn it around. And I'm an optimist.

And you could get stickers for your windows that were pennants for each of the SWC teams.
