Something else to consider in this exotic 8 "DB" package:

One or two of the DBs on the field will be guys like BJ Foster, Overshown, or Thompson (who apparently takes after BJF and is giving him serious competition for the starting position!). Those sort of guys can scoot up and function more like LBs as needed, and blitz like madmen. They (at least BJF) can certainly hit and tackle like LBs, and appear good enough at slicing through the blocking/interference to get to the ball.

Counterpoint: Whether they can take on and stand up an OL is a different story. I think I'd be more comfortable in a 4-0-7 if we're taking away LBs at times. In any event, this experiment will soon be proven brilliant or a gimmick.

You make some good points, but that is my thinking re: DL - rushing only 3 proved to be very risky at times last season. Needs to be at least 4 IMHO, but I suppose we have to put our faith in the coaches on this experiment.... we will see.

i'm with you on pressure. but i don't think 3 DL precludes rushing more than 3 if they use DBs to do that.
 
Right. I agree. Only rushing 3 (as with a "prevent" defense) has led to grasping defeat from the jaws of victory for many a team, many a time. A mediocre QB can look like a star if he has all day to sit back in the pocket...

Also, I think bad memories of Manny __iaz and some of his weird, exotic, gimmicky defenses and disorganized blitzes, reside in the back of the heads of many Longhorn fans. That tends to make us naturally skeptical of 'strange' new defenses that go against accepted norms. Then again, when Buddy Ryan rolled out the Chicago Bears defense, everybody thought it was a weird gimmicky formation (it certainly helped him to have superior talent though...).
 
My desires for the defense:

Two LBs with the speed and ability of Rod Choate & Robin Sendlien

DEs like Eric Holle

DC with the smarts and ability of Bill Bradley

I only wish Coach Royal has signed Darrell. After the draft, I called Bud Adams to tell him I thought he got the steal of the draft in the second round. He asked who that was and why I thought that. Our conversation concluded with him saying, "I really need to meet this young man".

I really got to know him at the annual fish fry at Tim & Volanda Wilson's home in Pecan Grove that Tim & Earl put on every year. Nobody wanted to get their food first, so Reuna filled a plate and handed it to me. I went downstairs to the TV room, where I was joined shortly by Darrell. Calling me by name, he said, "I don't want to offend you, but do you mind telling me what it was like to go from segregation to integration". - Tough question

Darrell's mother was a leader, a lady of principal and vision. Both are gone too soon. I would have loved for my granddaughter & grandson to have met Darrell.

Agree. The issue is pressure on the QB. In theory you could do a 1-10 or even a 0-11 as long as the QB doesn't audible out and the crashing backs time their move perfectly.
 
Your point is well taken. But, we’ll never see that because it would only work up to the point the offense catches on that you have no beef up front. Then they switch to a power running attack and push you back 5 + yards over and over and over. It’s good to have at least some big strong guys up front.

As a long time fan, three facts every year. Regardless of the coaches, the players or who’s in office... the same discussion from well meaning however uninformed sales reps, accountants and truck mechanics who know how to coach a D1 team.
1. The second string QB is better.
2. One coordinator is a villain
3. At least one of the 11 defensive players should not be on the field. Usually they turn pro BTW.
2019 will be no different.

I would be surprised if anyone in the entire world thinks our #2 QB is better at the moment, including #2s mom.

There was one exception to this and that was 2005. We have to have a PERFECT record or else. Actually I take that back, that year we probably still had 2 of the three. (starting QB was at least settled and there probably still idiots saying he should be a WR)

4. The Head Coach will have at least one major brain fart each season.
 
2009 is another exception. History proved without a doubt he was not better than the starter.

True, although even going into the 2008 season there were still more than just a couple of people saying Chiles was a better QB than McCoy (who, to be fair, had a rough 2007).

Herman said the defense will go with extra DBs. On the third-down package, Roach, McCulloch and Ossai are pairs with 8 DBs.

Since the latter 2 are LBs, isn't that more of a 1-2-8 than a 3-0-8?

An unproven Head Coach, but defensive genius Bill Belichick used a similar scheme to pull off a huge upset in the Super bowl to beat “The Greatest Show on Turf” Rams. Sometimes even only rushing 2. Patriots first Super Bowl win, and did it with a backup QB.

Remember when West Virginia only rushed 2 against us a couple of years ago, and BOTH of the 2 guys got to Sam (although thankfully he managed to dodge/shake off both of them and scramble for a bit)?

If this is the actual depth chart going into game 1 (a big if...), there’s a few very interesting developments. Coburn has already won the starting job at NT. Foster impressed the heck out of me last year. If J Thompson is neck-and-neck with Foster, that’s a very good and unexpected sign—and an indication of just how good this secondary is shaping up to be.
 
Many years ago I was listening to an interview with Bill Parcels. They were quizzing him about the 4-3 vs the 3-4. He said, look, it doesn’t matter as much as you think because almost every NFL team rushes 4 players on each play from either line up, that apart from where people start or their stance, all the teams become 4-3 once the play starts.

Not sure that applies to modern Big 12 defense, but ....
