Ewers

You either trust Sark, or you don't. He did not pull the QB, he did not adjust his play calling to account for the inaccurate downfield passing. He believes that the value of letting Ewers struggle on the road (with the paddle people in his head) will pay dividends next year and thereafter. He let that happen as an investment to the future. IMO, he is coaching to next year. Its also of note that he observed the lack of effort from some of his receivers to even raise their arms at throws above their reach - quitting on the play - which 8 does often - watch the film. It will be interesting to hear how he handles and communicates with the team this week. I rack it up to a teaching moment, and a huge vote of confidence for his young QB.
Really??????
you don't sacrifice present games for future games. that's nuts

I think some of the players wanted to bench the WR’s too.
That could explain the Savion Red dust up on the sidelines. Make no mistake.....it wasnt only Ewers that had a bad day.....Outside of JWhitt...again....Worthy especially and a couple others were less than awesome for us.
I have seen enough of Worthy now to recognize his warts. He may play Sundays due to speed and ability to get open....but needs a ton of work on key areas related to body positioning, tracking ball, anticipatimg the throw, positioning relative to defender and ball, and being on same page with qb on where the ball should be, speed control, etc.
Dont forget, it wasnt just Ewers missing him...
Both Card and Thompson missed him a ton.
I have been wondering if either Worthy has problems tracking ball on longer throws and adjusting speed etc accordingly, if qbs are overestimating his speed and ability to track ball, or if Worthy is underestimating the qb.
On that early interception...Sark was in Worthys face not Quinns after the play FWIW.
QE had a bad game and made a lot of poor throws, but a critical eye must be cast on the WR room.
I personally hope we quit trying to force to Worthy and get more balls to Whitt, Sanders, and anyone else who cares to step up....

I agree with the idea that letting Ewers have a full game of experience on a hard day on the road and in the wind was a good investment for the future. How else can he learn? He basically didn’t even play football last year as far as any games. He split reps in camp, missed half our games with shoulder pain (only played 2 games really).

Some things can only be learned in an actual game, no matter the raw talent. Brisket takes a while to cook.

Leaving Ewers in may (or may not) have slightly lowered our chances of a different outcome, but we were always within one play of tying or winning. We were not throwing the game— we were right there in the game.

So, there was not enough reason in the game itself to deviate from the larger plan of developing Ewers to be a Heisman type QB.

Sark was a QB himself. Apparently QB’s don’t get pulled but everyone else can. That can negatively affect a team trying it’s butt off to win a game and still be in the hunt.

Dabo thinks differently and benched Uiagalelei on the same day. Won the game, then said DJ is the QB, his guy for sure, and it's ok to have a rough day.

That's how you do it.

I have said this before, Worthy is the prima Donna type that has to have the ball perfectly thrown to him.
or perhaps he is just tired of the throws a little bit off and he just doesn't want to make the effort to adjust to the ball. He has an attitude problem and perhaps Savion sees that and thinks he can do better.
I will be glad when worthy is gone in spite of his occasional success. GIVE ME A TEAM PLAYER PLEASE

You also said you were worried that Bijan didn't hustle enough based off of him not running full speed into the end zone during his HS highlights.

I think your assessment of Worthy is equally off base.

Ewers will be back, no doubt in my mind. Scouts know he’s made of glass and his QB ranking among his college football peers is probably around #10-12. This isn’t a gripe at all! He’s just not ready! I’ll be thrilled to have him back! Murphy will portal and Arch will be QB2.

Ewers may not be ready, but that hasn't stopped many others not ready going for the millions. The NFL drafts on potential, not college performance numbers. If the NFL drafted on college stats Colt woulda been a 1st rounder and Trubisky woulda been a 5th rounder.

considering that Ewers is already a millionaire through the NIL he may very well come back. I have been assuming that he is going to the NFL but maybe he will be back.
I am trying to decide if I like that.
He is definitely our best QB at the moment.
I am anxious to see what Manning brings to the table with his running as well as throwing abilities.
Admittedly, I am one who usually wants to see what the next QB can do especially if I see flaws in the QB that is current. But if Ewers returns, that's ok, as a previous poster has already said we will probably see plenty of Manning. I have written off MM as portaled.
Ewers and Manning and Trey owens would be strong.

I doubt Murphy will portal - he will wait one more year to see if he can play ahead of Arch the following year.

I know MM is loyal, and I applaud that, but if Ewers is back next season, MM should portal to a place where he is a strong candidate to start cause he needs to see plenty of playing time to get ready for the NFL. IMO. I think if he stays Manning may very well beat him out for the #2 spot anyway.

I think his ranking is higher than that, and I think from an NFL point of view, if I may have that liberty, that his ranking is around 5-9. mostly due to his acuity at protecting the ball and his ability to make all throws (though I have reservations about deep throws).

(though I have reservations about deep throws).

this is where I think he can lack touch on long balls. he either hits them or he doesn't. there's a nuance to a thrower who throws a ball that guys can adjust to/run under.

and his injury lowers his ability to prove himself over a season (for a sophomore)

6-10?

thinking about Ewers deep ball throws.
Seems like he just lofts it downfield hoping for the best which I don't quite understand.
Surely he's had many deep throws to the same receivers in practice even against defenders.
So he should be able to gauge a receivers speed and throw the ball to a spot where he knows when the receiver will get there.
I have done so many times in my long backyard heralded career.
Yes there are variables but when you are at that critical moment when you're setting your feet to step into it and you see the receiver streaking down the field and he's got a step or two lead you should be able to drop it right in the bread basket at least 70% of the time. He should have the confidence to think "I've got this" with all the practice he's had. But it doesn't seem like he does. He needs to find that rhythm of stepping into the throw and gauging that distance.

The talk of Ewers coming back indicates to me that he is not close to being 100% and is playing because not turning the ball over is a priority. He may be about 85-90% to start the game and it deteriorates from there as he makes more throws especially ones that require zip. The interception could have been a touchdown but he just underthrew it badly. Did it slip in his hand or did his shoulder twinge or catch or something that caused it to be about 10 yards short of where it needed to be. He did make some throws with zip on it, most notably the one that Worthy touched the ob line before turning it up. We know he went to the locker room early at the half, and didn't make many throws in the second half. That may have been Sark going ultra conservative on his own, or maybe Sark went ultra conservative because Ewers condition got worse. We will never know for sure.

First off, I think Ewers is the best throwing QB we’ve had in a long time. He’s improved a lot since last season and I’m happy with him as a Horn.

Seeing him without pads on the sidelines earlier this month was sort of shocking though. He is not tall- as in he looks very average in height for an athlete. Like 6 feet flat maybe 6’1”. And he is not athletically built. He looked comparable in size to a lot of the average sideline support staff. Not sure how much good QB muscle he can put on to solidify the frame to take more hits.

Well I’m alone then because I believe MM has tremendous potential. Might be wrong because I was a Casey Thompson fan too but I like what I have seen in Mm. I just think he needs some time behind the wheel.

I can see MM beat out Arch in 2025 if Ewers plays in 2024. I bet MM plays in 2024 too due to Ewers hurt or just to play the back-up.

The chatter has really ramped up that Ewers is returning next year and it makes sense, he is somewhere between the 8th and 10th QB on the board if he goes pro after this season and next year he can push to be one of top five on the board and show he can get through a season without injury. Selfishly I was not looking forward to Murphy or Manning being our starter in Ann Arbor and then through the first SEC schedule. Arch can use another year to develop and I suspect Murphy will hit the portal. Reality of college football today.
