I grew up in an all white town with an all white school district. I don't know when Coach Royal started trying to in recruit minority players. What I do remember, however, was sitting in the HS training room rehabbing a knee in 1964, when a guy walked in and asked where the coaches' office I was. (You had to go through the training room to get to their office.) After I told him, he left and returned a few minutes later with a man I recognized as Paul "Bear" Bryant.

In 1964, Alabama was segregated, and Coach Bryant could not be seen entering a "black school", so he arranged with his old Aggie assistant to have the Hebert & Charleton Pollard HS coaches bring some recruits to our school to meet him. None chose Alabama or Alabama chose none of them, I don't know which. When was Bama integrated?

I would ask everyone of these kids individually if they have any idea who Willie Ray Smith, Sr was. Of course none would have a response, yet he did more for young black athletes in Texas than anyone else ever has. including integrating the SWC. That is why I firmly believe these kids are puppets being manipulated.

I get why the players want money donated to causes they are passionate about. But there's an issue with demanding for it to go towards organizations geared towards electing members a particular political party. For one thing, if that actually was a step towards solving the problem, then Minneapolis would have already solved it. But for another, single-Party solutions being funded from the football funds is just a violation of common sense principles no matter which political party it is. As someone who mostly leans Libertarian - and thinks it pretty clear that they were the only party who were already against abuse of police authority before May 2020 - I'd still absolutely be opposed to a bunch of UT donations going to an organization that putting that money towards funding Libertarian campaigns.

I agree with a lot of that. But ..renaming buildings. NO WAY !!!! These buildings are named just like most all of them.......That family/person donated a ton of money to support the university. That person is a big reason the university is as successful as it is...The names should stay. If anyone wants a name on a building donate the money to get your name on a building...

If Nick Saban at Alabama goes to his players and tells them that BLM is a joke then 90% of their football players will transfer immediately and he won't ever crack the top 30 in recruiting again. Say goodbye to the 5 or 6 five-star guys he gets every year.

You can NOT have a good football program without black players, period. Alienate them at your own risk and watch your program go into the toilet.

This is far beyond football though. Some of you really need to listen to Tom Herman's interview with Colin Cowherd from a few days ago. He's hurt that his players are hurting. It was by far the most honest and vulnerable that I've ever seen from him. That will go a long way to help black kids feel welcome at Texas.

What is uncomfortable? Most of the talking points are hardships and anxieties faced by nearly everyone. I went to college recently. I "listened" and heard all of the talking points. Hell, I had to hear more than most students. Due to a student leadership position, I had to meet with an african student group and "listen" for hours.

I learned that black students and white students face a lot of the same problems, anxieties, and life challenges. We have a lot more in common than we realize. For example, "the talk about police." I got that talk from my parents. Corrupt cops have wrongly screwed over people in my family. Those members of my family did not have any magical "privilege" protections. Also, cops pick on white kids in the suburbs and white people too. Some cops, like some people, are jerks and might kill if they feel like it. I fear bad cops too and am nervous around cops in general because I do not know if I am dealing with a good cop or a bad cop. There are two small towns in Texas I will not enter because of injustice that happened to members of my family and I expect the worst out of the police there. None of that is unique to the african american experience.

All people have to deal with rude and inconsiderate people. All people get made fun of for some appearance related reason or another silly reason. All people get wrongly judged by at least someone. All people get screwed over by someone for no good reason.

This is not all that serious of a matter, but I'll give you small, everyday stuff that happened to me like what I head from the African American students. At UT, I had a class I should have had an A in. On the last test, the TA gave me the exact failing grade to lower my overall grade to a B to the decimal point despite having a mostly correct test that was well above the score I received. In fact, the last test was grossly out of whack with any of my other test scores. I asked the TA and he flat said he did not like the look of me. He was a british exchange grad student, was going back to britain and did not care if he screwed me over as there would be no consequences for him (he had exchange student privilege!). I had never spoken to him ever and he just did not like me for some screwball reason. I went to the professor and he said he does not grade tests and his TA's grade stands. He would not even look at it. I tried to protest and it got nowhere. Being white did nothing for me there. Life's not fair and full of stuff like that. Sometimes you get wronged for no reason or a horribly unfair reason. It happens to everyone. Count your blessing and move on.

Anyway, for some bizarre reason, we are now teaching propaganda that everything is great for white people and bad for black people. Some black students are believing that propaganda. Some white students who are either truly ignorant or have truly enjoyed an easy life are believing those teaching as well.

If you have spent anytime among different classes of people, different races of people, are not ignorant, or have not had all the luck, you go "hey, a lot of this is not unique to the african american experience. Where was my magical white privilege when a cop did this to me? Or this happened to me? Or that happened to me? I can relate to a lot of this." I am not complaining about my life. I am very blessed relative to all the people alive in the world today or have lived in human history. However, if you are white and have experienced some bad breaks from people treating you poorly for bad or hateful reasons, you understand that you can understand and relate. If you are white and do not come from money, you can understand and relate. If you are white and come from family without college degrees, you can understand and relate. Also, maybe it helps if you have mostly lived places where "people who look like you are the minority".... aka caucasians in South Texas. Finally, human beings have both empathy and the ability of abstract thinking, so yes, they can understand what it is like to be someone else or correctly or incorrectly imagine what it is like to be someone else. That is within the reasoning capabilities of all human beings.

I have listened. I have read about it. I have heard it all. I have concluded that the whole concept of "white privilege" is exaggerated, too broad, does not accurately describe every individual's separate human experience and is pretty racist to assume such a broad thing about any race as a whole. Also, I have talked to older people of various races who remember what an actual systematic racist society looked like in the 1950s. Many of our older posters could tell that is not what we have today. There was a time, not too long ago, where people of color were mostly treated horrendously and not as equals by society as a whole. That is not today. Unfortunately for the white privilege propagandists, I have the memories, life experiences and "fancy book learning'" to remember that we used to be at war with Eurasia and were not always at war with Eastasia.

However, most importantly, removing statues, changing building names (nobody even knows or cares who the building is named after most of the time anyway. Also it is named after them because they gave money, not because they were good people. I agree. This isn't "erasing history" (at least not now). What this really is about is making anything that suggests traditionalism politically toxic and outside the Overton window. Basically, they are trying to ""Hitlerize" them. The Confederacy is the low-hanging fruit because they overtly supported slavery. However, Columbus is next. The founding fathers are coming after that.

What I've been ok with doing is removing Confederate memorials and flags. I understand why those bother black people, and it's honoring a rogue regime. However, it pretty much needs to end with that.

I don't think it is huge and devastating. If these changes are adopted, I will treat athletics at UT the same way I treat professional athletics. Since I stopped scheduling time to watch the Cowboys and Texans, I have enjoyed my Sundays so much more. Now I can fully enjoy my Saturdays too. And I'll have the UT money beggers put me on a do not call list.

Just because something has racial origins doesn't mean it still has racial connotations. If you asked a college player (regardless of team) what Paddy Wagon meant, he'd say a police vehicle for rounding up arrested suspects. The player probably wouldn't have a clue that the term was based on slurring the Irish. The term has become so ubiquitous that it has lost its racial overtones. Hell, when I hear the term "Redskins" I don't think of Native Americans, I think of a ****** football team. Before the internet, one would have to work pretty hard to find out the racist origins of "Eyes of Texas". Growing up, I NEVER thought of that song as being anti-minority or pro-white in any way... still don't. I think of it as being pro-UT (which to an Aggie is almost as bad ).

UT, A&M, Baylor, etc. were all founded during a period of time where racial prejudice was baked into the culture. 140-odd years later, the culture has changed considerably. Has it changed enough? Certainly not. My message to student athletes would be that their concerns and issues are valid and worthy of thoughtful discussion. Rather than provide the University with a list of demands, I would encourage them to provide the University with a list of topics they'd like to discuss. Those discussions could then lead to consensus and action.

I don't doubt other schools will be dealing with similar situations soon. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out..

Excellent post. It should be required reading for the FB team. I don't care to go through it all, but I've had my own experiences of white discrimination in my career and also harassment by the police.

Telling me to read a book and suggest I don't know what it's like to be black is a disgusting insult. I've been in the homes of over 2000 poor black families. I've done plenty of volunteer tutoring. I know exactly what their lives are like and one thing I know for a fact is poor blacks get privilege most poor whites can only dream about. I even feel bad for the Asians that don't get accepted to a Stanford because a white person needed to be admitted. That's discrimination I can't stand and I'll be the first to say if an Asian person does better than me academically, proves to be a better worker, etc., and I get privileged over them then that's when I'll have white guilt. I'll also be the first to admit they deserve more than me when they out study me, out work me.

That's a huge issue with blacks and woke whites. They live off of what they read in books and see in MSM news and are brainwashed into believing it's fact. Being naive is just where it starts. I also know one other thing for sure. If I had a choice to give up my white privilege in order to receive the black privilege that exists today I'd make that choice in about 1/10 of a sec.

I grew up in an all white town with an all white school district. I don't know when Coach Royal started trying to in recruit minority players. What I do remember, however, was sitting in the HS training room rehabbing a knee in 1964, when a guy walked in and asked where the coaches' office I was. (You had to go through the training room to get to their office.) After I told him, he left and returned a few minutes later with a man I recognized as Paul "Bear" Bryant.

In 1964, Alabama was segregated, and Coach Bryant could not be seen entering a "black school", so he arranged with his old Aggie assistant to have the Hebert & Charleton Pollard HS coaches bring some recruits to our school to meet him. None chose Alabama or Alabama chose none of them, I don't know which. When was Bama integrated?

I would ask everyone of these kids individually if they have any idea who Willie Ray Smith, Sr was. Of course none would have a response, yet he did more for young black athletes in Texas than anyone else ever has. including integrating the SWC. That is why I firmly believe these kids are puppets being manipulated.

I believe the first black scholarship player at Texas was track athlete James Means in ‘63-‘64. Story was that his mother went after Frank Erwin to get the scholarship. (I knew James and his sister and they were good people.) Texas was early in breaking this race barrier. To this day The University of Texas has been a forward thinking school and a non-racist institution of higher learning. They are the school who fought for BLACK PRIVILEGE in admittance requirements, all of the way to the Supreme Court.

These kids are being used and don’t know all of the facts and the history. If UT wants to get played by those who are using the students for an evil and untrue cause they don’t have the stones for me to support them going forward,

Bring someone like Jack Brewer in to talk some sense into the team. But DO NOT roll over and get played, becoming a wh-r- to a football scoreboard!!!

Nice commentary 77, and 23, do you really believe any person of color receiving accolades (I believe you said a statue) is “nearly” perfect? On that I have to strongly differ - great though they may have been in their own way they certainly were not perfect, even those of Texas legacy.
