Let’s get some insurance!!!!!!

2 balls to the next batter right away. Coach doesn’t like this. Mercer is through.

Enter Grubbs

I like how aggressive Schloss has been with both the offense and defense. He doesn't mess around. Sorry kid, gotta throw stikes.

No disrespect to Dartmouth but absolutely no reason for Texas to lose a game to Dartmouth and coach was going to have none of it. 6 balls in a row with a runner in scoring position??? He had seen enough and so had I.

Still a lot of season left and hopefully Mercer gets it figured out, this is his money season, it's either now or never.

a few early season observations:

Coach quickly finding out who he can rely on the mound in tough situations (Burns, Riojas & Grubbs).

A. Rod has solidified his position at 3rd, I think, his defense needs to improve though.

Catcher - If Oliver and or Chamberlain can show they have value, look for them to gain more playing time. This infield is making too many mistakes and the offense from the C position could be a lot better.

Only 10 more games left to figure out the best combo before conference play begins.

Well, there was our first ever SEC game, in which we run ruled one of the SEC's premier baseball programs--one that has won a National Championship in the last 2-3 years.

I wish he’d do this more—pull a struggling pitcher right away instead of letting him dig a deeper and deeper hole.
If I had to pick one immediate difference I see between Schloss and Pierce it is this. I am not entirely sure yet how I feel about it because Pierce's trust in his pitchers paid long-term dividends in the CWS years but was a sometimes high risk strategy that would blow games like yesterday and in the not-so-great years was frustrating as hell.

This could be a good game to:

Start Oliver Service at Catcher - see how he does against competition.

Put Chamberlain at DH for Winfield (or whomever else is at DH)

Maybe Gumbo for Mendoza at 2B for this game.

Tumis and Hudson Hamilton must be throwing wild in practice or something. I'd thought we'd see lots of both. So far we haven't seen either.

I think both pitchers' fastballs peak in the mid-90s, but these 2 appear to this fan's eyes to have the most (and the most bizarre in Tumis' case) movement on their breaking stuff of anyone on the pitching staff. Hudson Hamilton's spin rates are in the upper quadrant of MLB pitchers. And Tumis throws some breaking stuff that appears to defy the laws of physics--and batters can't touch it. Last year, their control was just ok--not good but not bad, just ok. Other than control, I can't think of why these two wouldn't be out there on the mound a lot.

Chop,
I liked the timing on that hook on Mercer, too. We have lots of new arms to check out. I have to trust that the coaches know what kind of personalities the pitchers have and what the best approach is for their improvement.

aUTfan,
For me right now, catcher on defense is a bit of a concern also, don't like some of the miscues there so far. I hope those are just early season kinks. Spoiled by several consecutive years of really good ones, I guess.

Trivia:

Which Ivy League institution's seal has naked Indians on it?

a. Harvard
b. Cornell
c. Princeton
d. Dartmouth

Answer: d - Dartmouth

Dartmouth was established to educate and Christianize the Native American Indians. Sometime later, a bunch of trust-fund White dudes named Skip and Chad took over the Dartmouth Lacrosse team from the Indians, and it's been downhill ever since...
