Cotton Bowl: Horns-Buckeyes Game Thread

I don't know why Colt was more popular than Quinn. Maybe Quinn being a 5-star made him an underachiever and Colt being a 3-star made him an overachiever. Bill Bates. People like that. Colt also had that aura of being a Texan. Quinn is a bit of an enigma personality wise. I don't have anything against him.

As for a bootleg, maybe the problem was Sawyer was sitting over there on the side Quinn would roll to. That dude needed to be double-teamed. We left our RT on an island on the strip fumble/TD.

Bootleg plays often work, however we prolly didnt see many due to Ewers mobility and dinged up Cam not being able to block effectively.

Cam struggled all night to block that DE / Edge guy. I guess the coaches thought a gimpy Cam was better than a young and healthy Goolsby?

A few bootlegs and a healthy tackle were not going to win that game last night.

During one of the Cowboy games this year, Babe Laufenberg said 'It's easy to sit 200' above the field or watch on TV and criticize everything you 'see'.' He went on to say what you don't see is the speed of the game. You don't see all of the preparation that a coaching staff and team goes through, the strengths and weaknesses, the tendencies in particular situations. You don't see that a coach spends over half of each day with his players, he knows their strengths and weaknesses too.

Had we scored to tie it at 21 and went on to win last night this board would've been crowning Sark as the 2nd coming of Saban this morning. But we didn't score and suddenly Sark is an idiot.

We as fans should always expect better. I still think Sark is exactly who this program needs and nights like last will make him better too. If that opinion somehow makes me a sunshine pumper, I plead guilty. And I will be a repeat offender.
A forum is to discuss both the good and the bad. Otherwise, why have a forum?

Sark has certainly done a lot of good things, but every coach has his faults. Mack had VY to make up for his faults, those don't come around very often. He also had Colt, but decided run him up the middle in the 1st Qtr of the NC game. The ONE player you absolutely can't lose. Fred didn't tell his DB's, "no matter what, don't touch that punt".

Mack probably had more faults that Sark does, but there are some things you simply can't do. Those include running the 1 play that has a high chance of an interception and low chance of completion on 2nd and 4 when you need to run out the clock. Fortunately Quinn's heroics bailed him out. Another is a sweep that requires perfect blocking against a fast defense on 2nd and 1 that could put you in a situation of losing considerable yardage requiring a pass on the next play. Texas hasn't passed well inside the 10 all season. And protecting Quinn against a stout DL has also been a problem for the OL all season.

Sark may make the playoffs every year, but I don't think he wins a NC until another VY comes along.

I don’t really agree that the play call before the half was a “blitz”. Yes we brought a db on pressure but dropped number 11 into coverage. There were only 4 rushers and 7 back in coverage. I don’t see that as a blitz call. We had 7 players within about 5 yards or so of the runner around the 35 yard line and nobody made the play. Oh st had 5 blockers at that point incl 3 Ol who ran 15 yards to get there and they all blocked it very well. We just didn’t get the guy on the ground.

I do agree the 2nd down pitch sweep at the one was a bad play call and really cost us. The loss of yardage put us in a must pass situation and the defense knew it and they are the best red zone defense in the country. We had moved the ball like 74 yards in like 6 plays and Quinn was like 4 for 4 for 74 yards on the drive. All kinds of momentum and to score there probably sends game to overtime and with our overtime victory the previous game and that confidence I would have like our chances.

All in all a very closely played game by both teams. Time of possession, first downs, passing, rushing, turnovers etc all very close.
It came down to a couple of big plays that they made and we didn’t.

Two plays were the difference.

We had a great chance to beat OSU, but just didn't get there.

Still, this team and this year were pretty damn good. 13 wins! Played for SEC championship our first year. Stomped OU and the Aggies.

And we look to be even better next year.

Hook 'em!

This!
Only two teams in all of college football had a better year than us. One of those two teams will lose its last game on Jan. 20th. We took OSU to the limit and they got a break that put the game away. We had the opportunity to tie the game and most likely go to overtime.
By contrast a few short years ago I would watch the elite teams play for the natty and realize that we were eons behind those teams in terms of talent. Now we are right there with the best of them with a bright future ahead.

We will be better if our OL replacements gel quickly. If not, Arch may be spending a lot more time than he wants running for his life.

That's going to be the big question mark going into next year. Hopefully osu loses a lot of talent on their d-line (i think maybe they will) because the new o-lineman will have to grow up quickly.

People lose sight of how difficult it is to reach even the quarter finals.

He will be good at carrying a clipboard. He will be a Joe Flacco and bounce from team to team, with opposing defenses knowing they can hit the sack clause if they see QE on the field.
mb,

I heard that Chase Daniels made almost $200 million in his career as a clipboard carrier.

I'm not a sunshine pumper, and I've been vocal that I'm not a huge Quinn fan, but damn it if I'm not so proud of these players and their effort. Ohio St is a GOOD team, and we definitely had our chances.

Hopefully coaching staff will learn from this year and better utilize the weapons we have next year. I am thinking back to years when we weren't even bowl eligible, and I'm savoring winning 13 games this year!

Let's give Quinn his flowers, let's be excited to see what Arch can do and how he makes this team his. Hook 'Em forever! :hookem:

Two things no one seems to have seen or answered for me:

1) on the goal line, lineup and it was obvious osu knew what was coming. SEVEN defenders lined up to cover our left. WHY didn't Quinn either call time out or audible (NOT TO A ROLL OUT) to a QB sneak?

2) Your DC refuses to get in WR's face at the line, gives them that sorry *** soft zone defense to let them have the middle of the field (that's known as playing not to lose rather than playing to wind). Why the hell do run a safety blitz starting him from 20 yards back? Then you telegraph it; just put it on the jerrah tron.

Thoughts? We only have TWO quality OL & one is the center. On the one yard line, with osu overloaded to the left, move Banks to guard and QB sneak. Normally we couldn't move it, but the defense was not lined up "normal".

While I'm bitching, I am very serious about this one - does Quinn have an eye problem? He seems to not have great vision to his right.

My favorite play from inside the 2 yard line is the RB diving high over the pile for the TD. You haven't seen this much since the 1970s-early 80s as it can be rather dangerous for the RB. But we did it at least once earlier this season, with success. The fact that the interior DTs on the other side are firing out low/submarining actually helps us. Only a stud LB in the right place at the right time can stop it.

We need to practice and use this play when we're at the 1 or 2 yard line. We could also use a WR to dive high over the pile.

Be careful Sabre, they’ll call you Satan for giving an honest critique.

It helped that Johnnie "Sky" Walker could clear 7' in his football uniform.

Here’s the deal…we’re close. Very close. I know some of the crowd is satisfied with that, but I want a ship. And to do that we can’t lay an egg like vs TCU at home, at night. Though we had a chance at the end, we struggled badly vs the Huskies. This year we laid an egg vs Georgia at home then choked in SEC that we absolutely dominated in the first half. We were lucky to survive a choke job vs Arizona State. And then there was last night. We can and will win the other games, but we gotta figure how to win these games. I don’t care who we blame or don’t blame, but it’s up to Sark to figure it out. Like I said before, maybe with a mobile QB he’ll go back to his wizardry play calling. Or he may need to hire a play caller.
