For my first 3 years in Germany I never tried it. It just looked nasty and grizzly - just looked like a hunk of bone with ligaments. Then one day a German waiter recommended it to me. I was apprehensive, and he said, "many Americans don't like how it looks, but nothing on the menu is as good. If you try it and don't like it, I'll bring you something else for free." I went for it, and he was right.
For starters, there's a ton of very tender and flavorful meat on it. It can easily be your only meal of the day. You just use your fork and work it off the bone. And like the krustenbraten, the fat is broiled until it's crispy, so at least the top layer is quite tasty. Overall, I probably ended up eating 3 or 4 of them in Germany, and when I did, I basically didn't eat all day so I could finish it.
