Coronavirus

What will the naysayers say now? Us opening up was supposed to create the next Hot spot
They will either claim that the numbers are manipulated OR, alternately, that reporting is just delayed due to the holiday weekend (or both). We will know better this afternoon when they update...IF there were holiday-related delays, it should show up in this afternoon's posting.

And may I respectfully add, **** these police.

I do have to say that I was surprised that the dearly departed's Harris County criminal history has not yet been splayed all over the national news. There is only the mention of moving up north circa 2014 when he could not find work...likely due to having just been released on yet another Aggravated Robbery offense.

And no...it does NOT excuse the conduct of the officer(s). What is DOES illustrate is that we have yet another poster child of the social media set who don't know what may have happened prior to the officer going rogue...

That's not how they act. They do not respond to any kind of questioning that this would entail. Instead, they will slant the stories to make it look like their predictions are true, ie, "Texas reports more CV cases in past week than ever before", ignoring that its because of greatly expanded testing (like 2-3X).

Who here would get the vaccine when it’s ready?

I certainly won't right away. Understandably they're in a big rush to develop the vaccine, and they're trying to give the drug companies civil immunity if this vaccine turns to crap. That means there's no way that anyone will know with great certainty that this thing is going to be as safe as a normal vaccine. Personally, I'd rather take my chances with getting Coronavirus (if I haven't gotten it already, which I actually think I have) than take my chances with a rushed vaccine. If a few years go by and the vaccine is working great, then I might get it.

By the way, on a largely unrelated matter, if any of you wonder what it's like to have a colonoscopy without being sedated, unfortunately, I can tell you what that's like. It happened to me on Monday. It's no picnic.

A guy I know had that. Midway through the procedure, the doctor said "Don't worry about the erection. It's perfectly normal."

Puzzled, the guy responded " I don't have an erection."

"I wasn't talking about you."

My doctor was German, so he had no sense of humor. And this wasn't supposed to be non-sedated. I got a shot of something that was supposed to make me zonk out, and it just didn't happen. Rather than try to figure out why, the doctor just started shovin'. (Apparently Germans frequently do these without sedation.) The actual procedure wasn't all that painful but was very uncomfortable, especially the "entry." And because they inflate everything, the stomach ache afterwards was fairly painful for about 2 hours.

Try to relax the sphincter. I thought you and JF had some sort of commentary on that.

Is your doctor also a dentist? If you got propofol, you would have woken up from the deepest rest you ever had wishing for a double cheese Whataburger and fries. I now question German medicine.

Taint intact?

Wait!! Why all the colonoscopy humor? I came to this thread to read about racism, mask vs no-masks, Karens and lunatic liberals vs wacko conservatives. So disappointed...

I read “MrDeez FOS - German Doctor No Anesthesia Edition”, and we’re now waiting for the video to confirm, under the “pics or gtfo” statute. Exam may have happened on a bus.

Very disappointed.

Is that when you had the 30 second fart?

That came a few hours later. I didn't even know it was possible to fart like that. Of course since I hadn't eaten in 36 hours and had done the "cleanse," they had virtually no odor at all. Garmel and Sangre would have been disappointed.

Honestly, I think he figured he'd just push through (literally and figuratively). Germans frequently do this while fully awake and conscious, so to him this isn't a big deal. Furthermore, this isn't a doctor who caters to Americans, so my comfort was probably less of a priority for him.

It's also possible that he doing his small part to get back at us for the firebombing of Dresden.

Visited with a client hospital CEO yesterday. Surgical volume is growing, but not as fast as expected due to people fearing coming to the hospital. They have started marketing to potentially alleviate. In the last 2 months, their DOA (dead on arrival) numbers have quadrupled. Suicides and suicide attempt are also up. The cure for Covid will kill more people than the virus itself.

Anyone surprised?
They knew what was in Nancy's spending plan
Should this even be legal?
They are lucky their punishment is not up to me

I came here to discuss my weekend in Matagorda Beach vis a vis the virus and instead can't stop laughing about the 30 second fart and Mr. Deez white knuckling a probe... Jesus....

One-third of all coronavirus deaths in the country have been in New York State and 91% of those deaths were in New York City.

I have long felt that the greatest job in the world is backup QB in the NFL.
But being a white limousine liberal definitely looks attractive too

Holy crap, is that a sense of humor I see? I thought only minorities were allowed to crack jokes?

The average deaths per year from flu is about 40,000 in the US. COVID now is at 100,000 as the virus is trailing off, overall in the US.

That is with a vaccine and built up immunities. Comparing COVID to Flu isn't fair to COVID at this point. Once people get more exposure to COVID strains and mutate to be less virulent, the hospitalizations and deaths will most likely come down.

If there is a vaccine that will further help. But who knows when a real treatment or vaccine will be available. May still be years.

I just googled it. Evidently the CDC can't count since just my search of 2017-2018 come up with 3 different CDC numbers

The CDC estimates that between 46,000 and 95,000 Americans died due to influenza during the 2017-18 flu season.

This link below says 80K
CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in the U.S. - STAT

From the link above:CDC officials called the 80,000 figure preliminary, and it may be slightly revised. But they said it is not expected to go down.

So Redfield while on a speech tour to promote flu vaccinations quoted a preliminary number that subsequently was revised downward when the resullts were finalized. CDC results for previous provided previously.

Can you explain why the estimates on this page are different from previously published and reported estimates for 2017-2018? (For example, total flu-related deaths during 2017-2018 was previously estimated to be 79,000, but the current estimate is 61,000)?

The estimates on this page have been updated from an earlier report published in December 2018 based on more recently available information. There is a trade-off between timeliness and accuracy of the burden estimates. To provide timely burden estimates to the public, clinicians, and public health decision-makers, we use preliminary data that may lead to over- or under-estimates of the true burden. However, each season’s estimates will be finalized when data on testing practices and deaths for that season are available.
