I don't disagree that he shouldn't spitball ideas at a press briefing. It looks foolish regardless of the merits of what he's suggesting. I also agree that he wasn't being sarcastic. If the media/Democrats want to say it's a silly idea or say he shouldn't spitball, that's fair. I agree. If they want to say he's lying when he says he was just being sarcastic, I would agree.

However, it's never enough for them to do that. They have to step over the line into dishonesty and mischaracterization. They have to say, "he said we should inject ourselves with Lysol and bleach!!" He didn't say that. He didn't suggest that. He didn't encourage that.

It's like the stupid hydroxychloroquine/fishbowl cleaner controversy. They could have said, "he's being too optimistic about a drug that hasn't been shown to effectively treat the disease." That would have been fair and accurate. But they had to jump to, "he said it was a cure, and now some man who ate fishbowl cleaner is dead because of Trump! Orange man bad!!!"

No matter what he does to hurt his credibility, they always seem to find ways to hurt theirs even worse with mischaracterization.

I don't understand it. The biggest weapon Democrats and the media (and yes, they're on the same team and equally partisan) have is Trump himself. He is unpresidential, undignified, and talks out his *** a lot. They could contrast themselves with that by being dignified and careful and accurate with their words. But no. Let's do everything we can to be just as bad or worse and mix in a lot of sanctimony and nullify our biggest advantage. It's like playing football against a team with a terrible secondary and deciding for shits and giggles to have your quarterback try to pass with his non-dominant arm.

When I first read that, I saw

And thus it passed that we were finally in full agreement, if only briefly
