Controversial opinions

From the perspective of a non-drummer, I'd put Mick Fleetwood as only a short notch below Peart/Ginger Baker/Bonham as rock drummers.

Fleetwood was also one of those all-around musical geniuses.
 
If Roy Clark had gone rock instead of country, he'd be considered on the level of Page, Richards, E. Van Halen, etc., and just a tad below Hendrix.
 
Yes, Cream is my favorite band of all time, but I was always led to believe that Baker was not a "good teammate", and part of the breakup was because Bruce & Baker couldn't get along.

Supposedly one of their flareups resulted over the fact that they couldn't agree on the last song to be included on their new album. Arguments went all night and into the early morning when Bruce started playing just before dawn, and the result was "White Room". I saw both Bruce & Clapton on late night TV tell that story.

I always thought Baker's hoariness was because he finished second to Hendrix is the "Most Handsome Rock Star" pageant.

Glen Campbell was one of the most talented overall musicians — and a virtuoso guitarist — that ever stepped into a studio or on a stage. A true master.
 
"Best practices" are often not the best but rather the lowest common denominator of what is currently accepted
cf. "standard of care" in medicine

There was once a place in Houston’s East End—Loma Linda’s that could equal anything in the top 3 towns. Houston has a smaller number of great Mexican restaurants, but their bench isn’t as deep with quality as San Antonio, Austin, or El Paso.
 
EP also serves up a (usually very tasty) different style of Mexican food than anywhere else in the state. They’re out on an island way out there.

I've been to Loma Linda, but the best may have been El Jardin when Joe had it. Alicia's in Cypress is really good, and Taqueria Cancun on Gessner has some of the best shrimp enchiladas at lunch. Lots of really good places, but when the city is 60+ miles wide and over 100 miles deep, that's lots of real estate for Mexican food.

I'm really disappointed that Herrera's closed in Dallas.
 
Never enjoyed any Mexican food in ELP. Casa Del Norte in Juarez was great back when you could go to Juarez with no fear.

Are Fonda San Miguel and Matt’s El Rancho still in business in Austin? Jaime’s (with the best margaritas in the Capitol City)? I heard El Patio closed.

And here’s the controversial opinion—all 3 of these beat the pants off anything in San Antonio.

Both are still open as well as El Patio. El Patio shut down for a short time, but reopened when a nephew took over. However, while all the food is the same, it's not the same as there was pretty much 100% employee turnover so things did change. I ate there a couple times a month for decades but now I just don't go anymore because its not the same.

It’s a rare family restaurant that doesn’t take a hit on quality when it passes to a new generation.
 
Ms Joseph decided to close El Patio and invited all the old timers to come one last time. I was coming off surgery and my daughter drove me to Austin for one last meal. I believe it was Thursday afternoon. The line in the parking lot was nearly three hours, but no one was complaining, just exchanging stories about the Joseph family and memories of El Patio. They brought a chair out to the parking lot for me to sit in. I tell people this was the only time in my life that Matthew McConnaughay had to stand in line behind me.

A short time later Maryann's niece bought the restaurant from her and reopened it with the old staff. Food seems to be the same, and she has added fajitas. All the old staff has left, and service is lacking, but the food is still good.

Fun fact, I was and still am a very decent acquaintance with the last owner. When he told me he was shutting down, I came pretty close to buying him out to try to keep it going. After a couple months of discussions I told him that in the end I just didn't want to be in the restaurant business. He laughed and said, "I don't blame you. I don't either, that's why I'm closing it."

Once you get them to understand, "you cash my check, you do what I tell you", they sometimes become manageable.

Wanna see engineers fly? Walk in CH2M Hills office in north Dallas & mention my name, but don't stand near the ninth floor windows.
 
Couple things, for the longest time Forte’s Mexican Elder in EPaso was the best Mexican place in the US. I would head straight there from the airport every trip. But alas, as I can attest over the past 3-4 years it has gotten to a ‘hit’ or miss, never bad but no where near the top scale it once was. In fact only the fresh chips and incredible salsa are the same.
The mention of Juarez brings such sweet/sad memories because i grew up in EP it was a special date to take my to be wife for dinner there, drinks and dinner -steak and/or pescado under $10 for both of us and excellent. Now no one dares go over there.
 
Was Forte's the place between Mesa and the police station on that street running parallel to I-10? White stucco as I recall. Ate there multiple times in the early to mid 90s, but last trip there it had greatly diminished.
 
no, Forte’s is on Chelsea, perpendicular to I10.
But as you know running through town Int10 curves to the north.
Downtown is a ghost of what it was but they are desperate to redo it so some new things - even moved the baseball downtown.
A few good places to eat downtown but the only white stucco I know is a Dallas Cowboy shrine. More Cowboy stuff than I have ever seen. But their breakfast is great if you like good ‘hot’ Mexican breakfast. Might be called Maria’s not sure.
