Coaching News and Rumors

Poor Kevin Steele got fired without cause after 2 months at Tennessee. Poor guy is only going to collect $860,000. Tennessee expects him to seek employment as it would offset the $860,000 owed to him. Perhaps Baylor would give him another look.

WOW, that was short lived... did Tennessee get buyers remorse after poor recruiting or did Steele get caught with the Chancellors underage daughter or something else?

Articles I am seeing say fired without cause...which I found to be...ummm...interesting.

Makes me wonder if he uttered the wrong thing to the wrong person but it is something that, by itself, is not termination grounds due to #1A protections...

It's Kevin Steele:

1) Not enough room in offices for the entourage of NCAA investigators that set up office wherever he goes

2) Tennessee had a "palace coup" when Phat Phil ousted Johnny Majors and took over.

Tennessee had a "palace coup" when the Haslims took over, but that was more about them buying the program.

Tennessee had a "palace coup" when Phat Phil got the Haslims to make him AD after a series of failed/embarrassing coaching hires

Tennessee had a "palace coup" when Phat Phil ousted the Haslim family from all Tennessee athletics so he was "king 0f Knoxville".

My bet would be that Steele was trying to organize yet another coup to takeover as HC, but his supporters raised a whopping $22 before discovered. Steele's resume can be found on top of Todd Graham's such places as San Marcos, Lawrence, KS, Boulder, USF, Blacksburg, Morgantown, Westwood, College Park, CYFair ISD & Frisco ISD.

Got sideways with a donor? Something like that?

Wonder if this could impact the mullet. He is not exactly the most popular man in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State AD Mike Holder to step down, be replaced by Chad Weiberg (espn.com)
I am not trying to make a political statement here.. just stating a fact...
Many may not realize this but the Stillwater area is quickly morphing into a more liberal culture. You could be onto something here...and I can't imagine things will get any more comfortable for a guy like Gundy in that environment.

Gundy should be ok...he's a MAN after all...albeit a few years older than 40...

That article on LSU is pretty damming and extends well through Bergeron.
KU gets what they deserve when they hired him even after the 2013 investigations.
How does Bama and Sabin stay above it all?

Rumors are that the "culture" continued after he left and some suspect this is dredged up to get a replacement for Coach O.

I was actually referencing the old rumors that he rubbed T Boone Pickens (RIP) and a couple of other high flying donors the wrong way.

It's no secret that T Boone didn't talk to Gundy for almost two years, but at no time was Gundy's job in jeopardy. Pickens had been around long enough to know that it is almost impossible to get someone to take the job. He remembers the days when Pat Jones couldn't get anyone to come be his assistants/coordinators. In fact, Gundy got his first job (not grad assistant) because an old friend of Jones agreed to be his OC ONLY if he could persuade Gundy to be QB coach & call the plays, which Mike had never done.

He got Jimmy Johnson to "pass through" when Barry & that same assistant coach recommended Boone hire Johnson. Les Miles was a leftover when no one would take the job.

The old AD is going to be hanging around for a few more years, and the new guy isn't going to rock the boat, particularly with Conoco & Phillips 66 having moved to Houston. A change now could tank recruiting & player development, meaning oSu becomes Kansas & K-State's homecoming games.

When I lived there from 2012-2015 there were constant rumors that T Boone Pickens was trying to get him fired because he wanted to see OSU win a National Championship before he dies and he believed as I think everyone else on the planet believes, there is no way in hell that Gundy will win one. Plus find me a OSU fan who is not tired of losing to OU. It was always said that the AD was the guy in the room who reminded everyone of all the facts that you are mentioning and kept the dogs off of Gundy. So if he is still going to be a big presence, I see Gundy staying, if not, I really think he will be gone in 2-3 years unless they can beat OU one or two times. Of course, this is just a bunch of gibberish I heard from OSU fans and guys on the radio. I absolutely never spoke to anyone of any importance at OSU so I do not want to pretend like I have any "good sources".

I guess they’re satisfied with living just a hair above mediocrity.
I think it is more along the lines of we are not the only ones who do not like a

Gundy has many of the same personality traits of Tom Herman and game time decisions. He has an equally awful (actually worse) record against OU and like UT many at OSU thought that they had a chance to compete for a National Championship this year and would certainly beat OU in their "rebuilding year". As I said I do not know any power brokers at OSU, but if Gundy loses his guardian angel, I think his time in Stillwater will be short lived.

Gotcha. I see now..
I thought you were referencing the cultural/political climate there and a little if the heat he was taking a couple of times over the last year or two.
Someone must like him because it seems (at least from the outside) that he weathers controversy pretty well.
Sounds like you have a few connections to the area and probably know more than I do. All I have is one of my wife's relatives who just moved there for business.
Sabre may be right on the "not wanting to rock the boat" ..for now at least.. bit.

Les Miles gone. Possible replacements.
Willie Fitz- Tulane
Lance Leopold- Buffalo
Jay Norvell- Nevada
Skip Holtz' LA Tech
I'd go after Bill Clark at UAB but my guess is he'd have no interest. Worst that could happen is he says no and you move on.

Gundy has beaten OU twice. That makes him the second winningest coach against OU in school history. Bob Simmons won three times, 1995, 1997 & 1998 (don't ask why, but I was actually at all three of those games), and got fired in 2000.

So Gundy's record against Big Brother is not an issue. Unlike the folk in Brazos County, despite all of their bluster, they really don't expect to beat Big Brother.

From afar, and not really paying that close attention anyway, seems to me OSU is in a much better place with Gundy than they ever were before his arrival. Personality traits? In game decisions? I haven't got a clue as to what the man is like. I pay attention to OSU once, maybe twice a year.

Miles was a joke when he was the coach at LSU. He got lucky several times in spite of totally brain dead decisions. I can't help but wonder how some of these men get head coaching jobs. The word "genius" gets tossed around when referring to some coaches in football these days. "Dumb jock" should be used way more in my opinion. The game has evolved from the days of nothing more than a rugby scrum. But it ain't rocket science.

Poor KU football... program thought Miles could bring a little magic and attention to their floundering program.

KU is a football HC graveyard.... some coach itching to be a HC will probably take the gig for moving up the ladder to the top, the $$$ and if they fail, future AD's will ignore that he got fired from KU because - after all - it is KU football.

KU has become what Kansas State was in the 70's.
