Coaching News and Rumors

I heard Pruitt and the rest of the little ut staff hosted a "Roman Toga Party" which had more than two dozen reports of individual acts of perversion SO profound and disgusting that decorum prohibits listing them here.

Every time I hear I hear the phrase "student athletes" I say it this way, often out loud:

We need to run far away from Pruitt, very far away.
agree

That really is aweful..
...if it is below HFs lofty standard of decorum

Tennessee rumors are already spinning for their new HC. Here are a few I've seen on the net--

Jamey Chadwell (Coastal Carolina - from Eastern Tennessee) -- an intriguing possibility. The problem with this sort of guy is that they have a small number of good years at a lesser school against mostly crummy competition, and everyone thinks they're ready for the big time. That's sort of what happened with Tom Herman.

Napier (U. of Louisiana - also from Tennessee) -- this is a very good rising coach. If I was Napier, I'd hold out for something better, although U Tenn is in his home state. That could be where he wants to be. He could build something good there. This would be a major coaching coup if Tennessee can pull it off.

Doug Marrone (former HC Jacksonville Jaguars) -- this Bronx native has the NFL experience, but how will he handle alumni relations, hs coaches, recruiting, etc. From 1996-2000, he was in the State of Georgia, and he was at U Tenn in 2001 coaching TEs. He also has HC experience at Syracuse and the Buffalo Bills. Flip a coin on his prospects for success at Rocky Top is he gets the hire.

Hugh Freeze (Liberty, and no stranger to controversy) -- A lot like hiring the Pirate. You get some big time offensive firepower, but he raises some eyebrows. Tennessee is likely to go on probation. Freeze may not be the best choice for a program trying to get and then keep a clean image.

And then, there's the two Toms:

Tom Allen (Indiana) -- why would he jump ship from a place he built up and dive into the cesspool that is Tennessee football. If he were to say yes, this would be a major coup for Tennessee.

Tom Herman (Texas - dismissed) -- I would expect a stop at a lesser program first, but Tom could be a good enough coach at the right place. He did well in a short stint at UH. For all Tom's faults, I don't think he was ever a cheater.

Anyone considering that job must have truthful answers to two questions:

1) What will Fulmer's involvement be?

2) What will the Halsam family's involvement be?

Everything else, including salary, benefits, and term, is irrelevant once those two issues are resolved.

Tom and Rick, getting the band back together

Full list of UT personnel fired today:

-Head coach Jeremy Pruitt
-Assistant coaches Brian Niedermeyer and Shelton Felton
-4 members of on-campus FB recruiting staff
-The director and assistant director of FB player personnel
-A football analyst/quality control coach

There seems to be serious talk of Herman as a strong candidate. Tennessee is the wife’s alma mater and entire family’s team. They have heard me complain about how toxic Herman is. I hope Tennessee doesn’t make that mistake.

I think Herman would rather spend time with his family cashing the much larger real UT checks. He will get better offers in 2022.

I don’t care if he lands at Tennessee or not. Just glad we’ve moved on.
Yet to be determined if Sarkisian is an upgrade, downgrade or merely a lateral move for all that cash. I definitely remember UW and USC and it was a total cluster SNAFU at both.

If Sarkisian cannot connect very quickly with the Texas HS football coaches, it is all over. Got rid of Chang and Lovo, so if Carrington goes too, there is way too much on his plate, I fear.

Burnt, there are two big differences between TH & Sark:

Humility - Herman doesn’t even know the meaning of the word. Sark learned it the hard way. This difference alone is huge.

Contacts/Staff - There is every reason to believe that Sark is assembling an allstar supporting cast. People that can coach and recruit. Now, I’m not suggesting that Herman couldn’t recruit or that his staff was terrible, but from what I can tell, this looks like a significant upgrade, so far.

Now, it is true that these differences are not a guarantee of a better product on the field, so we will just have to wait. But there is certainly reason for optimism.

I doubt this. What blue blood team is going to hire someone who had a 1-4 record against their biggest rival, and no conference championships, while at another blue blood program? Nothing gets an AD more heat than the football coach not beating their biggest rival, and having the ATM style trophy case.

What would be a better spot that Tennessee for Herman? Maybe USC, but they had a decent year this year, so is their coach on the hot seat? Can't really think of another place that might be open, maybe LSU if the NCAA heat gets high, but if Herman had issues getting along with Texas boosters and fans, imagine him with the Coon Asses.

Tennessee would be a good landing spot for him. Decent history - NC in the last 25 years, fertile recruiting grounds, big time league. Yes he'll have to compete against Florida and Georgia, and that will probably limit how effective he'll be, but better than the mid-tier school I figured he'd be going to in a year - a Wash State or NC State style school (not those, but similar to that in terms of stature).

As for the money, with 20 million earned and 15 more coming, neither he nor any big time coach ever has to work again. They do it because they like it. So the lure of being the coach is going to outweigh any money issues.

I also agree that if offered, Herman takes the job. I’m factoring in his immaturity and the likelihood that he would want to stick it to Texas and show us that CDC and the others made a mistake. That’s his personality and frankly, he might do well at Tennessee.

Herman didn’t just burn a bridge at Texas, he nuked it. But that doesn’t mean that he didn’t learn “something” and that he cannot succeed elsewhere. He can, and he just might. In fact, think about this: Sark blew up what was at the time a once in a lifetime opportunity at USC. But look where he is now?

Herman hasn’t hot rock bottom, not close. So he hasn’t learned what Sark has. But he does possess the tools to be a successful — perhaps very successful — HC at some other Power 5 school.

Let me preemptively go on record and state that even if Herman does succeed, and wildly, it’s irrelevant to the situation at Texas. That’s because he could not stay here.

Only job I can see Herman being offered that is better than Tennessee would be Berzerkley (just don't let them find out you're looking at other jobs while on their payroll) and Stanford (they continue to put up with Shaw even though he's an ******* and they can't stand him)

Tennessee is at a recruiting disadvantage because they have to go into Georgia & Florida for quality recruits, and recruit against everyone in the SEC and half the BigTen. With Herman's love of recruiting all over the Western Hemisphere, he might find a niche there, and not have to be friendly with the HS coaches. Herman and the Haslams? WOW! Think the Royals and the Switzers. If Tennessee doesn't fully sever all ties with Phat Phil, nobody will be successful.

For the Berzerkley job, Herman could change his last name to Patel, and be an instant success. (Drive University from the freeway to the gates of the school.) Maybe if he put his Mensa certificate on a chain and wore it around his neck, both schools would go after him.
