Coaching News and Rumors

Michigan:

Harbaugh is still head coach (for now at least). Taking a page from Tom Herman and Big Ed, Harbaugh recently canned a coordinator to save his own neck for another year--DC Don Brown.

Potential DC replacements include: Muschamp, Jim Leavitt (FAU DC), Derek Mason (formerly Vandy), Lovie Smith (formerly U of I; good defensive mind/crummy HC), Charlie Strong (see Lovie Smith comment); John Rudzinski (Air Force DC).

Harbaugh will likely have at least one more year to turn the ship around. But, if not, candidates to replace him include: Bieniemy (OC KC Chiefs), Byron Leftwich (OC Tampa Bay Bucs), PJ Fleck (Minnesota), Clark Lea (DC Notre Dame), Tom Allen (Indiana), Pat Fitzgerald (NW), Matt Campbell (ISU), Jeremy Chadwell (Coastal Carolina), Luke Fickell (Cincy).

As much as I like Campbell, if I was Michigan, I'd offer Allen or Fleck.

The lesson here is that there is no sure thing except, perhaps, Meyer.

When Harbaugh was hired, few had any doubt that he would succeed, and wildly. And probably less would have hesitated to hire him at Texas, certainly in front of Herman.

He may still make it at MI but I doubt it. I think his place is in the NFL.

All this also brings up the age-old question: Who is more important--the Head Coach, or the Coordinators?

You cannot have the a strength of schedule that exceeds a Group of 5 school when you only play 8 conference games, 1 tough out of conference game and 3 FCS or lower Group of 5 teams.
I started to post the same comment, but then got lazy and thought, why bother?
That cult is rapidly approaching aggsy and they don't even see it!

Random thought:

If we spank UC tonight, wouldn’t that make Herman more marketable?

What jobs are still open?

ISU - Matt Campbell

Campbell will probably stay put at ISU for now, at least unless and until Big Blue ditches Harbaugh and happens to choose him above many other candidates. Rumors are that the only places he's interested in would be aOSU, Notre Dame, and possibly Michigan, and he's willing to wait it out in Ames otherwise. One source states that he'd even turn down Michigan. Well, if you like where you're at, and they think you're the best thing since sliced bread, why not stick around for a while.

Just to throw a new name out: Pat Fitzgerald?
He has made Northwestern competitive in the B1G and, from all accounts, is the type of HC that CdC seeks. Also, $5 million a year base salary would be $1.8 million more than he is currently making.

He’s quietly built up a good program, at a brainy place that won’t take academically marginal recruits, in a tough conference. Good coach.

VH, he’s a good one and if interested, it would be an intriguing choice.

Fleck is another one worth pondering.

Those are good coaches, but Northern guys who might either stay where they’re at, or wait for ND, aOSU, or Michigan (or the pros) to come knocking. Then again, Saban came from Mich State.

Alabama: Is looking at Bill O'Brien (NFL Houston Texans HC (fired midseason))and Adam Gase (NFL NY Jets HC (fired)) as a possible replacement OC.

Arkansas: Kenny Guiton (Colo. St. WR coach) will most likely be the pigs new WR coach.
