Coaching News and Rumors

I struck up a friendship with Gordon Wood late in his life. He always spoke highly of RC, Emory Bellard, and DKR. He'd been out of coaching awhile when Mack came along, but he knew of the relationship he had with Texas high school coaches, that was a big deal to him. I could never get him to comment on Switzer.

Except for his kids, he had two different teams through the Portal. That isn't a recipe for success for any team.
That is true. But with their recent success, a good new coach has a chance to build on that and keep the momentum going. Colorado isn’t a blue blood so they can’t use that pitch to woo recruits. They have to sell their improvement the last 2 years and convince kids they can get to the next level (I.e. the playoffs) and in the big 12 that is certainly possible.

The coaching choice is key, but can they cobble together enough money to hire the right guy?

CU is poison top to bottom. They bill themselves "Harvard of the Rockies", which would be a joke until you analyze the schools in the Rockies. Faculty thinks they are the academic elite of the old Big 8 - check their USNWR rankings. Faculty hates athletics. Party school? Three beer limit. Olden days they went up Flagstaff Mtn and got stoned, but so many ran off the road going home, they closed the road at sundown except diners at the restaurant (ever had Tiger steak). Only thing the school has going for it is Red Rocks.

Can you build a "portal team" without money?

I bet JJ will go along with the deal to take Shadeur (sp?) in order to get Deion. JJ loves a splash-hire.

I just think Dak's contract is iron-clad. He's stuck with it and can only push it out further. Dak needs help, not a back-up. I don't think Deion is that great of a coach to come in and deal with (in no particular order):

1) No running back
2) Only one wide receiver
3) Say bye to Tank
4) Best DT is a free agent
5) I can't even name one linebacker
6) Secondary - eh... maybe ok
7) Say bye to Zack Martin
8) Who's left on the O-line besides Smith?
9) Jerry
10) Jerry
11) Jerry

Well Chicago is still in the market for a coach. DFW sportscasters saying Jerry was negotiating to keep McCarthy but wouldn't agree to demands. Best coach left on staff for the Cowboys is db coach Al Harris. I hope Jerry finds a way to keep him
And I hope Jerry finds a way to no longer own the cowboys. Until then, just wasted brain cells for the few remaining fans.

He is the sole reason I despise the Cowboys after being a fan as a kid back in the Staubach era. Don't hate them quite as much as the Hitler youth in College Station, but root hard against them in every game and will until the Jones family is long gone from any connection to the franchise. Doubt that will happen in my lifetime.

Living proof that money can't buy that kind of class
Sort of similar to this story. When asked how he was able to keep his band together for over 3 decades, Duke Ellington replied that he used a little-known secret eschewed by other band leaders, “I paid them.”

The NFL is for the regions of the country that don’t produce good football. It’s all about the number of sets watching.

They know they have the southerners watching car and truck ads on Saturday.

Yep. I already loathed the man for the way he dealt with Tom Landry. Over the years, I have heard many first-hand accounts about Jerry and his in-bred sons and their behavior on team busses, at restaurants/bars late at night (many in Austin), and at Jerry's "Stabbn Cabin" off Oak Lawn to have any respect for that dude.

I've never felt less than loathing for this man. Anyone else notice Jerry grows more goblin like each year?
It all started with his horrible "face lift" many years ago. If I were Hunt Neurohr, I would have made him sign an NDA so he could not reveal the surgeon's name.

While I'm sure being closer to family is a huge part of his decision, the fact that the Carolinas are so much better a place to live than anywhere in Pennsylvania (yes, i have been to Bucks County more than once), not to mention getting away from the sinking ship known as James Franklin.

Good for him and a sign of a great coaching tree forming. The great coaches have track records of producing the next generation of great coaches - good next step for Washington and great signal on Sark.
